Eating Post-Op

  • I'm a little confused, if not, paranoid

Ok, Here are the post-op guidelines given to me.

    Week 1-2
-3 meals a day which include creamy soups, custard, creamy yogurt
-in between meals should be the sugar free beverages. Goals should be a gallon of water
-thickest foods you may have are sugar free pudding and yogurt

    Wekk 3-4
-2 to 3 oz of food - puree food that has the consistency of baby food. For maximum weight loss you want to eliminate carbs.
    -Suggested foods include:
    -flaky fish
    -cottage cheese
    -eggs
    -pureed meat
    -baby food

-liquids are not to be taken with your meals. Liquids should be sugar free and intake should be at least a gallon.

Now, with that information the first few days I've been eating broth, yogurt, sf pudding, and homemade tomato soup which I ran through the blender (there were still some seeds other than that no chunks or anything) and it was certainly thinner than yogurt or pudding.

Also, I'm making sweet potato soup right now, same as the tomato, through the blender and thinner than yogurt or pudding.

Since there are some experienced people here I want to know if my choices are ok? Also, it seems to me that the diet is pretty much the same for the first four weeks? I know each surgeon is different but based the information above any advice would be really helpful.

I just want to make sure I'm not missing anything.
  • It looks fine to me, the only thing I see that bothers me is the 3 meals a day thingy. My doctor would say eat when you are hungry, so if thats 5 - 6 small meals a day, then thats okay. Thin/liquidy foods will not hold you very long so don't worry if you get hungry, I would suggest you eat (but don't over eat in one sitting..portion control is important so you don't hurt yourself). Again... you should call your doctor if your changing anything just to get an okay.

Oh... one more thing, Protien...are you getting any? you might want to pick some up and add it to your soups or drinks, yogurt. Trader Joes has a wonderful canned protien shake (vanilla) and its only 100 calories. I forget the name but if you want, I can find it for you. They taste really good too. The chocolate ones are gross !!

Other than that girlie, you seem to be doing WONDERFUL. Man, 1 gallon of water a day, I was lucky I got in 20 oz my first few weeks LOL.

    to you.

    Leenie
  • welcome home, darlin! leenie knows best - but what i'm seeing is a big difference between the types of stuff on your doc's list and the stuff you're eating - CARBS vs PROTEIN. ya need the protein more than you need the carbs - sooo, think about how you can manage to get pureed forms of protein down the hatch!
  • I concur. Ditch the carbs, go for the protein as much as possible. It helps your healing and makes you lose faster.
