Umm protein drinks!!!
Carvinmom: October 2 is coming up very soon indeed! I too am looking forward to being able to walk and even sleep without so much pain.My four sisters and I have been dx. with fibro. Two of them are going on Lyrica. Doctors are bugging me about getting my back fused and I have adamantly refused; hoping that the weightloss will make the pain more tolerable and I'll be able to move. I have only gotten to use my walking sticks once in the past month. I had my second and final preadmisson testing yesterday and I'm good to go on October 16th. If it wasn't for a planned vacation I would be having surgery on Sept. 25th. I have a bladder infection again and will be going on antibiotics and am having dental work done this week. I'm going on vacation, on the Skybus, Oct. 7th and will be back on the 11th. I have all of my summer clothes packed up and the minute I go under the knife, I told my DH to take them all to Goodwill. They let me sample some new protein mixes. Both were by Nectar: Chocolate Truffle and Very Vanilla Bean. They were alright. I don't know what it is about protein drinks, but if a get a whiff of them I have a harder time getting them down. Something about that smell.....I picked up three Profects just to sample and they had two new flavors to offer Cool Melon Splash and Grapefruit Mango. My friend, who got my old surgery date, is doing really, really well. She is exercising regularly and for her birthday her DH got her a personal trainer and she is tearing it up! I'm get excited every time I talk with her because of all the progress she has made and the new life she is living. She is just a baby "42"! LOL!! I can't wait to be able to get on my "wide" seat bicycle and travel around. Man, I miss that kind of stuff. Be nice just to walk to the mailbox without a cane! LOL!! I was worried about the hours on my C-PAP, because I only sleep from 3 to 5 hrs a night, but the respiratory therapist said I had sufficient hours on the devil machine. That was a relief! Only thing that was upsetting was that I had gained 4 lbs. back of weight I am trying to loose before surgery. TOO MANY CARBS!!!! Best thing about yesterday, after the PAT, I got to see my new granddaughter. She is beautiful 5 1/2 weeks old and she is trying to hold up her little bobbly head and look around. She has had it kind of tough and been so fussy and they found out last week the poor little thing has reflux. Been on med for a week and can already tell the difference. Good luck to you Carvinmom!!!!

i am sooo excited for you two!!!!! you've both worked so very hard. your lives will be completely different afterwards - mostly for the better.
as for the protein drinks, i didn't know that nectar made a chocolate truffle!!! i've been using the fruity ones - the green apple and the peach flavor [that's not exactly what it's called - but i can't remember the exact name right now].
keep posting - and make sure you two are in the best possible condition for the surgery!!! don't stop now!!!!!!

date is set
nancy, so glad your on the same trail im on!! i tell you my hardest thing right now is not gulping my drinks and learning how to Sip !! who would think this would ever be a hard thing to do... It sure slows your eating down though.
I believe this practice before surgery is a good thing... gets you motivated but also gets your mind and stomach in the life style thats ahead of me. Ive had some slips but go back to my drink in the morning.. Still no walking sticks, but not gonna worry about it.. im staying close to home, no traveling, dont want to catch anything.. Lots of smoke from forest fires here in montana , so asthma is acting up and sinuses are miserable...
my protein drink i simply buy at sams and it has lots of grams and its got a good flavor.. i like it with cooked natural apples, for now anyhow, and a bit of cinnamon.. Jiff, i bet youve been through it all How do you manage to keep it going?? i know you dont want to go back the way you were . i dont either. But i did this before without surgery and lost and gained etc etc.. i see where you can regain it all.... that scares me.... but at being a grandma also at 62.. not many choices left in my health condition... I want to see the little things ive missed since i spent my life for everyone else.. carvinmom

hour to cook it 10 minutes to eat it!!
I'm am the fastest eater on earth!! I taste things as I go along to make sure it is seasoned right and so by the time I'm ready to set down and eat it I'm already halfway full, but can consume a whole lot in 10 minutes. Then to sit and visit with my slow-eating, skinny DH, I'll pick at stuff on the table. OH, so many bad habits. I've switched to a small plate, only one serving, and trying to lay my fork down between bites. I really need to concentrate because I'll start talking and shoveling the same time. Started leaving the food in the kitchen so I can't pick at it and not as tempted into getting second helpings. Sipping....will have to work on that. Went back through the kitchen again and got rid most of the grandkid's snacks and junk food from the last month. My 3 y/o granddaughter is a terribly unhealthy eater, so Friday I asked her to eat 1/4 c. of salad for lunch and I would give her a bite-sized candy bar (granddad's stash) for snack (didn't have any apples). She did eat her first salad and later on that evening she apparently was getting the "stomach" thing her brother had and threw up salad in their new van. Guess I might have picked a bad time to start her on salad!!! I've talked with each one of my family and asked that they be thinking of healthier foods for the holidays. I have one daughter that is starting to get "fluffy" and am worried that she will end up like me. She is a big fat stress eater and was diagnosed with RA in kindergarden. She is 36 and her knees sound like dry sticks snapping. I don't want my kids heavy and suffer like I have. They have teased me terribly about my walking sticks, but the little devils are each getting a pair for Christmas. I have been collecting low carb, low sugar, and high protein recipes and trying them out on DH. Haven't found one yet that was bad. Looked at a lot of WLS cookbooks and was surprised at all the things that were so carby. I don't like sugar substitutes, and am having to deal with that. I'm not a sweet eater, but love meat potatoes and breads. So about 2/3s of my diet has already been cut out. I got a really nice kitchen scale from Amazon and am amazed, and me a professional dieter, at the size of some of my portions. Meat the size of a deck of card. My cards must have been the 9x13s! I've already had a negative response to my WLS and it came from the RN at my PC's office! Have told very few people about my WLS and probably won't unless asked directly, just because "need self-control and to stick with it" and "easy way out" attitude. DH is more at ease with my decision or else is resigned; don't know which. I keep teasing him about when I'm just a little skinny thing that he will be taking ballroom dancing with me. I've alway asked if I lost my stomach would he take ballroom dancing with me and he said yes. Now, I think he is actually worried that he might have too. LOL! I'm really mentally in a better place now than I was before my first surgery was scheduled. Only thing I have purchased, besides protein subs., is an Oster egg cooker for my up-coming surgery. I'm good to go, excited about staring a new phase in my life. I can't wait to buy clothes that aren't 4Xs, big stripes and flowers, so short my gut hangs under and something besides size 13-15 underwear! LOL! Thanks everyone for all of your support!

WOW, carvin and nan - you two are REALLY blowing me away here, with your motivation.
just a couple of comments - first, carvin. could you please type in the label information on your protein drink? i just want to make sure it's not too carby. and the reason for that is because you're adding apples to it. now, after a year or so, that won't be a big deal, but right after surgery, it will be. apples have a lot of carbs. sooo, you might have to make do with 1 or 2 SLICES [you read that right - SLICES - not even 1/2 of an apple].
and nan - that whole 'picking while waiting for everyone to finish' thing is the EXACT reason i took up knitting!!!! when i'm finished eating - and everyone else is still at it, i pick up my knitting, chat, and keep my hands busy.
also, i gotta get my plate off the table, or cover it, or dump lots of salt on it or SOMETHING so that i don't nibble.
here's a thought for your granddaughter: make a little dip with 1 tbs peanut butter, a drizzle of honey [or grape or strawberry jam], and 1 tbs plain yogurt. and then she can take her little cut up apple pieces and have a real nice treat.

and ps - how do i keep it going? well, i'm not the only one around here who does! but bottom line, i remember EVERY SINGLE DAY what it was like to be bedridden and on oxygen, and completely dependent, and unable to do anything for myself. it's a powerful motivator. and trust me, i'm FAR from perfect, but i can't go back there. i JUST CAN'T!!!!!!!

Hey Ladies!
Jiff That's why I'm back knitting you can't eat chocolate and knit at the same time!!!!
Carvin any kind of sugar is not really going to process for quite a while
I remember day 3 post op 1 sip of milk made my head spin! Scrambled eggs will be your friend! OH! Also fruit skin!! if you eat anything with edible skin peel the skin off!!! or PAIN
If you guys are lactose intolerant Look for a more soy based protien shake It's only recently that whey doesn't make me want to hurl.
Nan!!!!!! Pfft to that nurse its not their life it's yours and this is Your decision
I didn't tell any of my friends till the night before the surgery I did a mass email b/c One of my gfs was very vocal about her opposition and I didn't want to fight with her
1 year later
she says it's the best thing i did for me!
Hit that nurse with your walking sticks!! easy way my hiney!
A good tactic if you're eating out! order an appetizer as your main course
and put your napkin on your plate when you're done (this skeeves me out won't touch the food after) I know it sounds silly but eating is very social and largely unconcious. better to render the food inedible than be doubled over in pain
or erm your own orchestra on the way out!

Oh Jiffy!
Man Jiffy, and I gripe because I can't crawl up and down the stairs anymore. I need to remember that when I whining and growling around, there is always someone who have many, many more challenges! How did you get to the point of WLS? I mean did you doctor bring it up to you? Thank God, you're not THERE anymore! Granddaughter: dip sounds good to me.
KO: I've been knitting and crocheting since I was a girl. I started a project last year and have one double-walled mitten done. Guess I know what I will be doing this winter. I know you have had your challenges with CP. How did you get where you are today? Did doctor advise or did you decide on your own?
Motivation.....What is motivating me the most is IF I'm lucky I'll have another 20 to 25 years to live and I really want to LIVE! Not set here all broken up and watching my life go by. Also knowing that really soon with out the WLS that I will be diabetic and have heart disease. I know that I'll always have damaged joints and crumbling back, etc., but without 323 pounds hanging on them, things will be much easier going. I heard somewhere that when you step your pressure on your feet and ankles are 3 times you weight. Yikes! Poor ankles, no wonder they are screaming "UNCLE"! There's my motivation. It will be interesting to see how my friend, food, and I will part company and keep a real distant relationship the rest of my life. As for me looking like a bald shar pei, well even that doesn't throw me anymore. If it comes to that, I think I'll my head tattooed "Bald, Bad and Beautiful!" LOL! Husband says we'll have it done together.

first class
ugh, looks like snow tonite!!
Jiff i was drinking Ease protein drink from Sams it had just a few carbs. I mostly stick to trying to count low carb and stay away from most things white. Of course i gained it back this last time.......again
i did have my first class today and they introduced me to a new protein drink called Unjury which has 20 grams of protein ,amino acids, lactose intolerence very little sugar.. dont have label in front of me . you can mix it with most anything, has anyone hear of that? The price looks better then optifast thouogh they all seem expensive and the dieticians been hoping the doctor would switch and he did cause it has had good results.. so im giving it a try tomorrow.
Also had physc. test and Now just to pass the blood test and thats it....
just that visit wore me out til i couldnt walk, darn fat im dragging along. Didnt do to bad on all liquid and with this UNJURY program you get to have, oatmeal, tomatoe juice, chicken broth, tea, decaff coffeefor my pre surgery. I was told not to be so concerned with the sugar as much as getting in , she said at least 80 plus grams of protein a day... but do watch the sugar..... so i can make my lattes!!! just follow the rules!!
there was a lady there who started out at 600 pounds and near death. and been doing this for 7 years..shes lost 400 and she was talked into coming cause shes struggling and so sad about trying again... so i told her about 3 fat chicks so i hope she will join... So any new ideas today girls?? The days are going quickly , hope i dont chicken out.... just me
