The further you are from your ideal body weight, the "easier" it is to lose weight. By easy, I mean you'll see bigger drops than when you are close. So judging by your height, I'd say you have about 20-25 lbs to go to get to ideal so the first 10 might be quicker than the last 10. I think you're going to need more than a month to lose 10 lbs. That's 2.5 lbs a week assuming you're close to goal at that point. Plus, if you have been at your starting weight for a while, your body is going to be more stubborn in letting those last few pounds go.

Why the need to put a deadline on the number?

Many people who set goals they don't make give up thinking that weight loss is "impossible". What will you do if you DON'T make your goal?

Why not focus on non scale goals... like so many days on plan, or exercising so many days. The weight will come off if you follow a good plan, it just may not come off as quickly as you would like!

The only short term goal I have is the next pound. I've been involved with challenges on various boards before and ALWAYS end up gaining weight because others are losing faster than I am or reach the pounds lost goal before I do.

So it's one pound at a time for me.

Default I exercised today I feel great!

1 mile on the treadmill & 1/2 hr routine with Kim Bollinger and the Ball (great for beginners) Now I feel invigorated and psyched. I am really going to try to do this 2 more times this week at least!

I prefer challenges where you are competing to see who can lose the most weight or percentage of body weight (there are a few on the challenge forum here). That way you don't set up some impossible number but rather it gives you an incentive to lose as much weight as quickly as possible. I never expect to win since there is only one official winner... but I like the competition and the motivation.

But back to your specific post... at your weight and height it will be very challenging to lose twenty pounds by Christmas. Certainly it can be done but you would have to be on an extremely strict diet and exercise regimen. Why kill yourself? Set reasonable goals... averaging a pound a week is very reasonable because it takes in the ups and downs of dieting, hormone fluctuations, water retention, gaining muscle, etc. Think about it in reverse... what would it be like to GAIN that much weight by Christmas? Think about everything your body needs to do to accommodate your weight loss... your skin and organs and muscles literally have to reposition themselves to fit the smaller you! Your body has to build new muscles and burn off fat and lower your cholesteral levels and regenerate cells and adjust your insulin and hormone levels. It is amazing what weight loss (and weight gain) requires of our bodies. Be patient and be healthy and set long term goals that are reasonable and sustainable.

minor threadjack

I thought your organs, etc., occupied the same space but were just surrounded by fat. When you lose fat, your organs et. al. are in the same place just closer to the surface.

Kateful, I think you are confusing subcutaneous fat (fat under the skin) with internal fat, which surrounds the organs, muscles, etc. When you shrink internal fat cells around your organs, then your body has to fill the gap somehow. When you lose internal fat everything has to shrink inwards to accommodate the loss. To visual the difference, picture a man with a large "beer belly"... the hard kind not the flabby kind. Big hard stomaches are due to internal fat surrounding the organs along with a layer of subcutaneous fat (the kind you can pinch). Internal fat around your organs... like your heart... poses extremely high health risks.
