well, if it is the caffeinated diet coke, you could have a caffeine withdrawal- I WAS ADDICTED TO COFFEE for the longest time, and slowly giving it up (rather than cold turkey), I was moody, cranky, had headaches and it could only be tamed by coffee. I'm glad I'm done with it now (I still enjoy a cup each day or so, but not 10 cups a day).
My vice was iced tea. I was never much of a coffee or soda drinker, but my day started and ended with iced tea, and was full of it inbetween as well! I did like you...cold turkeyed it...and survived! Give it a couple more days and you'll be over the hump! Best of luck to you!!
I agree that it's most likely caffeine withdrawal. If you're just trying to give up the soda and not the caffeine, then maybe try drinking some caffeinated tea to curb the pain? If you're trying to shake the caffeine completely, then unfortunately I don't think there's much you can do about the withdrawal symptoms. Scary how addictive such seemingly harmless stuff can be, huh?
I don't think I could ever give up soda completely. I drink maybe 1-2 cans of Coke Zero daily, but I don't think I'm addicted sine I can go a day (or 2 or 3) without it and still feel fine--I just like the taste, like how the carbonation makes me feel fuller, and like the little bit of caffeine sometimes (I don't drink coffee or tea).
Yeah, it's probably caffeine withdrawal. I drink about 20 oz of coffee a day and try to keep it at that. I wish I could cut it out entirely, but now is not the time for that. Great job to you for kicking the DC habit! There's too many scary claims about aspartame out there ... I know it's possible that aspartame is harmless, but I figure why take the chance?
Coming up with "new life kicks" is how I managed to not lose interest in weight loss. First I quit fast food, then I minimized red meats, then I did the Mediterranean thing, and now I'm into the Superfoods/whole foods thing. It shakes it up a little, keeps things interesting, and keeps me going.
Tea has a lot less caffiene than diet coke. When I (mostly) quit diet coke, I started making tea instead. Caffiene withdrawals are not good. Make yourself some tea to ease out of it.
I had to go without my 2 cups of coffee the other morning because I had to have a fasting blood draw to check my lipids. By noon my head was pounding. Seems to me I had the same thing with each of my pregnancies--I gave up caffiene once I knew I was pregnant and the headaches were daily for several weeks. Not fun--especially with the nausea that comes with being newly pregnant!
Maybe you ought to consider weaning yourself off of diet coke over a several week period rather than going cold turkey.
Have you tried taking some Ibuprofen or another pain reliever? It's been a long time since I had any problems with caffeine withdrawal but I seem to remember that pain relievers helped with the headaches. Also, make sure you are staying hydrated. Drink lots of water.
I think in another similar posting, someone suggested Bayer because it has a little bit of caffeine in it.
