Too much water?

I find myself drinking 8 - 10 pint glasses of pure water everyday. I rarely drink anything else (except for vodka when Im out). Is this too much water?

I drink at least two litres of water a day and find that it right for me, but that's about half of the amount you drink, I asked on the forum here about how much water I should drink a while ago and I had some really helpful replies. I'm not sure if this link will work as I've not done it before, but if it doesn't the topic is "How much water?" In the food section.

A long time ago someone told me that they never drink their calories. They just don't fill you up the way chewable things do. So we compensate with water.
If you are basically healthy, you'd have to drink an awful lot in a short-ish time to cause any harm. As long as you feel ok ...

"Too much water" only happens in extreme cases or in cases where an illness might affect how your body handles the water. Yes, it is possible to drink too much, but it usually only happens when you chug a large amount in a short amount of time. As long as you're drinking throughout the day and not chugging all at once, then if it ain't broke, don't fix it ;)

Water intoxication generally happens with extreme sports like marathon runners who drink only water and sweat out their electrolytes. Then it can be bad for a person, but like Jill said if you're drinking throughout the day you're fine.

Or if you're taking some types of blood pressure medications. My mother was hospitalized for water poisoning (water intoxication) drinking about 2/3 of what you do. If you're on blood pressure medications, ask your doctor how much water you should be drinking.

I get kidney stones, and my dr. says that people who get kidney stones by definition aren't drinking enough water. So I HAVE to drink a lot of water--or it seems like a lot to me, but it's really the "normal" amount. I drink 8 to 10 8-oz. glasses a day, which is 64 to 80 oz. total. Other kinds of beverages don't count, namely coffee, soda, juice. My dr. said when he says water he means water.

BUT, you are drinking TWICE that amount if you're drinking 8 PINT sized glasses, because a pint is 16 oz. You could cut your water in half and still be drinking the normal amount.

If you are excessively thirsty, and that's why you're drinking that much, you should see your own dr. about it.

I drink huge amounts of water, I'm constantly drinking during the day and can easily get through more than 2 pints in the evening between getting home and going to bed. I only drink water (except on long runs when I drink Lucozade, and weekends when I drink wine ;) ), and it doesn't seem to have caused any problems so I'm not going to get worked up about it.

My normal intake is 16-18 8oz glasses. I found a helpful "water calculator" as a guide.

Just before we go all confused about pints!!

1 UK pint = 19ish US ozs

I do drink LOTS of water (I should drink even more because I'm thirsty today!!) Probably 10 pints a day EASILY!

BUT I do work out a lot lot lot! 1-3 sessions a day anywhere from 20 minutes to 2 hours at a time. So because I lose water during exercise I need to replenish it by drinking a lot.

If you feel light headed/woozy/sick drinking too much water, then get to A&E straight away! I had a slight brush with water intoxication once and licked up a pinch of salt!!!
