need new snack ideas

I try really hard to eat more during the day in hopes that I won't be so hungry at night,,but that doesn't happen. I need snacks that will fill me up,,I am trying to do low carbs,,but I still do fruit,,lower carb fruit. My problem is I love crunchy stuff like crackers and chips,,not so much a chocolate or sweet lover,,just crunchy and salty,,any suggestions here? I am new here but the support is just wonderful,,thanks to all!:dizzy:

Two snacks I like are baby carrots (nice and crunchy!) with dip (nice and tart). Since an ounce of carrots have virtually no calories, I can splurge on 70 or so calories of dip!

I also like Kashi Go Lean Crunch dry as a snack. Excellent crunch factor. Half a cup is quite filling and is about 90 calories. It's on the sweet side, though, not salty.

Almonds make a nice crunchy, salty snack (170ish calories for an ounce, ounce = about 28 nuts), but according to Dr. Oz, you shouldn't have the roasted ones. Roasting destroys the healthy benefits of the healthy oils in the nuts. OTOH, roasting, IMO, is what makes them tasty! I'd rather have them a little less healthy and tasty than completely healthy and booooooring. It's a tradeoff I'm willing to make. Hey, even roasted, they're still healthier than potato chips, right?

Those have been my primary snacks (besides apples) for the past few weeks. I'd be interested to see some other suggestions!

I'd say hummus and toasted pita chips (cut pita into fourths, toast until crisp), but not sure pita chips are acceptable on a low carb diet.

I love celery filled with low fat philly and sprinkled with celery salt or spices.

A hard boiled egg with salt and pepper.

Cottage cheese with pineapple, or with an apple

Pumpkin seeds (you can buy some really nice spiced mixes, I would suggest packaging them in serving sizes and leaving the rest hidden at home, as they are quite more-ish)

Lena and Glory's suggestions are fab too.

I'd try and have protein in a snack, it will help satisfy your hunger.

I like those flavored rice cakes. I have the white cheddar ones, and they are crunchy and salty. Also cucumber slices with salt and pepper.

sotypical 05-10-2006 12:25 PM

baby carrots, cucumber, any kind of fruit, fruit source bar, thinsations, yogurt mixed with whole grain cheerios, rice crackers, dip (with carrots, crackers, whatever), the list can go on. You just have to be creative!

Mmmm, yes, I love snacking on hard boiled eggs. Normally I just eat the whites, though.

I like putting cucumber slices on triscuits.

dragonwoman64 05-10-2006 12:55 PM

I wonder if salsa wouldn't help satisfy the salt cravings for you -- veggies dipped in salsa

tntallgal 05-10-2006 02:07 PM

Those are all excellent suggestions,,,I do eat the boiled eggs,,usually the whites,,and the cukes are great idea too! Trying to stay away from the crackers because once I start I dont' want to stop,,lol. I also love the almonds,,even the boring ones I can tolerate. I also love the low carb fudge bars by Mayfield,,but I tend to want to eat several of them, lol, so I don't buy them.

if you want to do crackers, can you make your own 100-calorie snack packs? Take some little ziplock baggies (snack size, so they look satisfyingly full when you've filled them) and portion out the crackers. It takes a few minutes to empty out the big cracker box, but then you have several snack bags, already portioned and ready to go! And, since you've already measured, you can have the satisfaction of eating the "whole bag".

Well, that's sort of good, though, because you've recognized and are avoiding a known weakness. Not everyone can do that :)

Usually what I do is I get 5 or 6 out of the box. Then I CLOSE the box. I lay the crackers on a plate and top them with cuke slices or maybe some fat-free cottage cheese and a green olive slice or sometimes I just cut up pieces of lean deli meats into squares and put those on top instead.

That's why I like the cracker snacks (although I don't eat them very often) because you can be creative and put whatever you want on top of them. Sometimes I'll make little mini 'pizzas' out of them. I spread them with spaghetti or pizza sauce, then add whatever toppings I want, then sprinkle them with fat-free mozzarella cheese. Then I stick 'em in the microwave to get them hot.

I like to take grapes off the vine, the real good ones (I'm so picky) and then put them in a ziplock or any other freezer safe bag or box, in the freezer. they are real cold and take a while to eat but you really savor them. My diet calls one fruit derving 15 grapes. So I divide them by baggies of 15. By the time I'm done eating them, it's been 20 minutes, I've had something to do with my mouth, and I'm not hungry anymore.

Also when I was on the carb diet I did celery sticks with laughing cow cheese or any soft spreadable white cheese. Thats crunchy and it just tastes good!

UMMMM - Green Olives! Shelled pistachios, almonds, make a dip out of fat free cream cheese, fat free sour cream and a dried dip mix! Then dip in fresh vegies. Salsa was a terrific idea also - salsa and vegies! Good, healthy, satisfying snacks! I also like to have part skim mozarella cheese and fruit - decadent and satisfying!

MMMMM my favorite new snack is Light n Crispy WASA wafers, theyre big and theyre only 20 calories, with a thin layer of fat free cream cheese on top.
But I understand your dilemma, I have a hard time stopping eating certain things once I start --- well, not really certain things, EVERYTHING. :O/

I gotta look for this WASA bread. Misti was talking about it in another thread. In fact, I'm gonna go put it on my store list right now.

penpal 05-10-2006 05:44 PM

I love having a Wasa cracker (I prefer the light rye kind) with small slice of lowfat cheese melted in the microwave for a few seconds - yum! A couple of olives or a small crunchy pickle on the side and I'm happy. :)

They are only about 35 calories each and are nice a crunchy.

Here's Wasa's website with some ideas how to serve them: http://us.wasa.com/wasa/smpage.fwx?p...&SMLanguage=US

P.S. They are also great for breakfast with hardboiled eggwhites and a dab of lowfat mayo.

veggielover 05-10-2006 06:26 PM

wow surprise.... theyre made by the barilla company?

Brendalee 05-10-2006 07:01 PM

I am the same way.. I prefer salty over sugary and anything crunchy. I do lowfat wheat thins or triscuits (you can have like 16 per serving for like 130 cals but I try to cut it in half.. most times) and top it with whatever I have in the fridge at the time (cottage cheese w/salt works good for me and the salt thing... Also I buy lowfat granola bars, usually the peanutty ones which tends to satisfy the salty urge too. They are filling too and make a great snack, usually around 100 cals or so depending on the flavor/brand you get. Light popcorn is also good and goes a long way, you can eat a ton of it. At night I get real hungry around 9pm but I haven't figured out why, I think I also need to eat more protien but that's another story ;)

Good ideas here too, thanks!! I am also going to get some of that Wasa bread :)

That's very observant of you! I don't eat pasta very often now, but I think I've bought their pasta before.

Has anyone tried Mr. Krispers? I found them at Whole Foods. They are made from organic brown rice and are wheat and gluten free. They are baked and are sooooo crunchy! They have Nacho, Barbeque, Sea Salt and Black Pepper and Sour Cream and Onion flavors. 37 crisps has I think 120 or 140 calories..and I'm all about shoving the maximum amount of food in my face for the minimum amount of calories!

penpal 05-10-2006 10:15 PM

Mmmm. They sound good and Whole Foods doesn't usually carry stuff that has lots of additives, etc. I'll have to get me some!

jelynn 05-11-2006 12:45 AM

I've just discovered wasabi peas- which are great if you like wasabi :p They aren't low carb, but they are low fat and higher than mostsnacks for protein. Crunchy and hot, but not too hot. yum.

morrigan 05-11-2006 03:03 AM

A fill me up fast snack

1/2 cup refried beans in the microwave till hot, stir in 1/2 cup of low fat cottage cheese and pour on a bunch of salsa. Eat with a spoon. Under WW it is 4 points, otherwise, you are under 200 calories.

For wonderful snacks I get Janzen Farms vegetable chips! They are dried sweet potatoes, carrots, taro, beans and all kinds of yummie veggies. I get them at our local fruit market -- was looking for them online but ran out of time. But they are GREAT!!! I pay about $6 for a one pound bag but you don't eat that many at a time and a bag will last me all week or longer.

Getting a small apple and putting a tablespoon of *natural* peanut butter on it might be good. Apples are supposed to be a-okay as far as not having a lot of bad carbs. Also the natural PB is good...just a touch of salt, and TONS of protein. :) My gosh...I'm making my own mouth water. LOL Hope this helps!

Oh, that sounds really good!

Edit: Oh, darn. I checked the website and it said there are no Mr. Krispers sold in CA.

I like a wedge of laughing cow light cheese spread and 6 saltines. I really feel like I've gotten to eat something naughty, and it only costs 107 cals.

In fact, I love this treat so much I sometimes do an extra 10 min cardio to "buy" a double.

I've also been keeping 2 or 3 types of frozen fruit in the freezer. When I need something sweet, I mix together about a cup's worth, sprinkle with splenda brown sugar and microwave for about 45 sec ('til they are "soft frozen"), and cover with some low-fat whipped cream. It usually comes to less then 125 cals, depending on the fruit I use.

Jtjoray 05-12-2006 09:27 PM

They have those 100 calorie bags of popcorn. I eat those at night if Im wanting something to eat. Good thing about it is you can eat the whole bag.

slimkim 05-17-2006 11:55 AM

some snacks I like are carrots.. if you want a sweet treat you can cook them(boil) for 15 min in a little water.. satisfying at night.. I like to make up a assorted veg tray.. slice some celery and carrots and radishes.. and eat them with lite ranch or sometimes I take 1 oz cheese and put on celery or if need PB I add 1 tbsp amongest the celery.. it really feels like alot.. and if you still need more crunch add in a couple wheat thins with all of it so you are not JUST having that.. a handful of nuts .. tomatoes, cucs, red onion mixed with 2 TBsp of lite ital/red wine vinegrette.. sprinkle with oregano, parsley, basil and mix.. top with just about 1 Tbsp mozz.. toss.. oh my gosh sooo good... hope it helps..Kim
