Scale slave

I'm a bit sad to say that I am a slave to the scale. My father taught me when I first started working out a few years back, to not get onthe scale ever day.. more like once a week, on the same day. Because the changes in weight are so small day by day, if I weigh myself everyday It will feel as though all my work isn't doing anything.
That worked for awhile.. but now ive turned into one of those people who weight themselves everyday.
At the gym they have 2 scales, one is digital and is the little spin dial thingy. I weigh myself on both of them ( one will say something like 231 and the other will say 240) and then I weigh myself again when I get home and again before bed and in the morning when I get ready for the day. I only really pay attention to what the digital scale at the gym says.

I know it's not really a good thing to be a scale slave.. anyone know what I mean? lol there is even a doctor scale in one of my classrooms at the college and I will weigh myself on that too.

Tell me about it! I have a scale at home and I step on it every morning. I hate it. For some reason I went up 2.5 lbs since sunday. I don't get it. With all that I'm doing different to lose weight and it's not working....how the heck did I gain this weight in the first place! I think from now on I am only checking my weight once a week.

I too am a scale slave and it SUCKS! I HATE IT! But I can't stop. I thought I could cut down to weighing once a week. So I stopped for a week and weighed and hadn't lost. So I am back to weighing every morning.

veggielover 04-26-2006 08:13 PM

i couldnt weigh myself more than once a month cuz i want to avoid this very common "scale addiction"!

sotypical 04-26-2006 08:15 PM

I think once I have lost an amount of weight I can be proud of I will feel better about it. But since I had such a rough start and I haven't lost much I want to see it go down. Once I have lost 30 or so pounds I know I will find it easier to weigh once a week or even once every few weeks.

Hi ladies,

I, too, am a scale watcher. I feel that if I don't know what I weigh every day then it will get away from me. I'm dreading getting on the scale tomorrow morning because I overate at dinner tonight. I've been so good, but tonight I blew it. I keep telling myself that what I ate was healthy, and I know it was, but I still ate too large of a portion. How come one screw up can feel like all the good work is gone?

Grumbleworts 04-26-2006 08:38 PM

COunt me in on that. I too get up and hop on. And once I come home from work when I'm changing clothes...just to see. :) Once I tried putting it in the hall closet, and that worked for a few days....until I couldn't stand it anymore!

alwaysbelieve 04-26-2006 08:54 PM

Scale slave here too. At the doctor's office I go from room to room weighing myself because the scales all weigh differently. When I don't weigh myself I eat and eat and tell myself I know I gained but will lose it before I step on the scale again. The next time is usually too late. So I weigh myself daily to keep me honest.

babsy 04-26-2006 09:07 PM

When I'm thin I'm even worse. I keep weighing myself just to prove that I've lost the weight! How bizarre is that?

I've read somewhere just recently that it said the people who weigh every day vs. the people who weigh only once a week are more apt to keep the weight off.

Ah, I found the story from Webmd...

Quote:

Nov. 18, 2005 -- Making friends with your bathroom scale just may help you lose those extra pounds and keep them off.

While most weight loss programs don't encourage the practice, a new study suggests that daily weighing may be better for weight loss and weight control than weekly or less frequent weighing.

People in the study who weighed every day lost more weight or maintained their weight better than people who did not.

The early findings must be confirmed, but researcher Jennifer A. Linde, PhD, tells WebMD that daily weighing may serve the same function as keeping track of daily food intake and exercise.

"People who make lifestyle changes consistent with weight loss use all kinds of tools to help them," she says. "Daily weighing provides feedback. It may be one more thing that someone can do to keep them on track."

Although this is only one report, it does make sense...

Good luck with your weight loss!

I'm a slave as well. I recently bought my own bathroom scale and I can't keep my feet off of it. Before that I was going to my dad's house every Saturday and I'd weigh myself while I was there.

toofatforu2 04-26-2006 09:50 PM

best kind of scale?

what is the best scale to use digital or analog? i just bought didgital scales ansd i am scared they will weigh me more than analog scales!:?:

jtammy 04-26-2006 10:09 PM

Thanks for the link to the article. I DO weigh every day and sometimes more than once a day. For years, I never weighed, and that's how I ended up at 346 lbs. :o I go into it knowing that the scales don't move down everyday, but as long as the trend is downward, I know I'm doing something right.

Of course, I have a lot more to lose than many of you, and when I get closer to goal and my weight loss slows, I may have to rethink what I do.

MtaTJac 04-27-2006 01:34 AM

Shoot, I was a scale slave even before I started trying to lose weight. I would probably say that for the last 3 years (since I started gaining my weight) I have stepped on a scale at least 4 times a week EVERY week! (Moreso recently!)

azul 04-27-2006 10:22 AM

Scale slave here:dizzy: I get on it at least once a day if not twice to three times a day. But it keeps me in check. If I gain, yes I am upset but I know to work harder. If I kept it off or lose:carrot: Then I know what I am doing is working. I feel if I do not get on the scale then how do I know my progress.

I have a digital scale and love it. Every scale is not the same so I always weight on my scale and only my scale. Right now I am going on pounds not how much I weight but how much I have lost. When I get closure to my weight I want to be I will know by the way I feel.

So please add me to the list of scale slaves Please:wave:

expecting my digital scales today or tomorrow and am getting nervous cuz in the past digitals have always weighed me heavier. boy i am nervous!

Ready2ShedLBS 04-27-2006 10:29 AM

I weigh myself, once a week. Sometimes twice a week, but I only count one weigh in. Now if there is a different scale I will use it just to see if I weigh the same on that scale.. as mine.

I try to live by the motto " a watched pot never boils"

Once upon a time I was a slave to the scale and it made for a miserable time.

PeeB 04-27-2006 10:52 AM

I think it is an individual thing, though that article definitely shows a trend. I have not been on a scale in a year... I know my clothes fit a little better than they did then, thats all I know. I refuse to weigh myself until I fit into a certain size, because then no matter what the scale says I will know its okay. At this time, I could not handle having those high numbers confirmed. And then to have them change only over a month or so... It would discourage me. My drive is having loose clothing. I bought the next size down in my Old Navy pants... I can fit in them but they are tight. So my goal is to have them fit comfortably and flatteringly.

toofatforu2 04-27-2006 11:48 AM

oops up by a pound on my new scales.. but i am still satisfied with them sure makes reading them better! and that pound could be water !

kristine724 04-27-2006 12:02 PM

I don't get on the scale but once a month. Even though I haven't lost any weight yet, I feel that if I do I'll want to see more than 1 lb at a time, so once a month maybe I'll see 5 lbs, which is more motivating to me.

Nikki128 04-27-2006 12:12 PM

I to am a scale slave. I weigh in 1-2 times a day. I find it keeps me in check. However, I do realize sometimes I weigh more do to water or salt or whatever.

I get one the scale 2 times a day, once in the morning and once at night. But, the only scale I measure by is when I weight in at WW on Fridays. I weigh every day to give me an idea of where I am. And I am sure I will do that at my goal weight too...at least once a day. I don't consider myself a slave, but I have to admit it would be hard to give up.

Glory87 04-27-2006 12:19 PM

On previous, failed weight loss attempts I was a scale slave. I would weigh myself multiple times a day and the number on the scale was an emotional roller coaster. If the weight was down, I felt enthusiastic and successful and motivated. If the weight was up, I felt like a loser. Quite frankly, the scale made me miserable.

When I decided to change my life in July 2004, I came up with 10 rules (like - "never be hungry" and "it's okay to say no to birthday cake at work"). One of the rules was - "only weigh once a week." It definitely saved my sanity and helped me to feel good about my weight loss.

Everyone has to do what feels right for them, if getting on the scale 3 times a day makes you happy and makes you feel successful, do that. If getting on the scale 3 times a day makes you happy sometimes and miserable sometimes, re-think the constant weighing. One of the worst things that can happen during weight loss is thinking "oh, all my hard work isn't doing anything, I might as well give up and eat cheesecake." Definitely want to avoid THAT feeling.

toofatforu2 04-27-2006 12:23 PM

i agree i am only gonna try to weigh once a week if possible!flutuations can be fatal to my diet! lol!
