Hope to beat the sticky bun....

  • Ok - I think I'm going crazy. Tomorrow is Secretary's Day or Administrative Professional day, or whatever you want to call it. Well my boss INSISTS that we go to the Faculty Club to show her appreciation for all our hard work. (No, she doesn't have a weight problem).

Don't get me wrong, I can get wonderful, healthy things there to eat - which I plan to do. But one of the thing she told us is that she's going to get us all a...

    STICKY BUN!!

Forgive me for being sorta naive (at this age) but I had no idea what a sticky bun was. So, thinking it was sort of a dessert/donut - I'm thinking to myself, I could have a bite and it shouldn't cause me to have any trouble. But after I google a recipe for a sticky bun I was DYING when I saw that one sticky bun (and believe me, I know that the Faculty Club is not going to skimp on the size or ingredients of this item) has about 1,178 calories. It's sounds sooo good - made with pecans and hot, soft and fragrant bread with a sweet gloss. (I'm evidently doing my TOM right now). Sorry to drive anyone crazy with the description.

Already I'm stressing bigtime over this situation and I've been craving that silly thing, too, and I've never even had one before! I think it was because that's all we talked about today. And believe it or not, I've not been in a restaurant since January 1. I've been doing my own thing, food wise, and I've lost about 20 lbs since then. I'm not sure I'm ready to go into a restaurant and not pig out - although my pig out won't be all that extensive.

I'm thisclose to calling in sick tomorrow so I don't have to deal with this crap. But I just can't - I have my spinning class at 4 to 5 and my water aerobics from 5:30 - 6:30.

Oh well, thanks for letting me get this off my chest - and I'd sure appreciate any advice ....
  • Wow, that sounds amazing, I see how tough this must be for you. Maybe you could arrange to share one with someone else (or several people)... or just try it, enjoy a little piece and then tell everyone you are going to take the rest home and secretly throw it out or give it away.
  • That is hard. But you could share yours with someone to keep you from eating it all.
  • Well, Im allergic to nuts.....so thats usually a good out for me.

But for you....can you cut it into 4 pcs...eat a 1/4 (294 calories) of it, and ask for a box to bring the rest home. Toss the rest of it on the way to your workout.
  • Could you possibly offer to give yours to a co worker (before you ever arrive at the club) in exchange for a tiny bite of theirs. That way you won't have the temptation of that huge thing because you'll know that you've already given it to someone else, but you'll get to at least try a small bite of it since you've never had one before.
  • The calories/fat/sugar alone is enough to keep ME away from those things.

No way. You couldn't pay me money to eat that crap.

Just refuse it. Don't eat something you know you shouldn't to keep from appearing rude.

    Not worth it.
  • You need to do what you need to do to keep your respect for yourself. I would think that your supervisor would understand, if you explained to herhim in private that you really appreciate the sticky bun, but right now weight loss is really important to you. Would she be insulted if you made a healthier choice. Your boxx probalby didn't think that it would be a problem. Most 'thin' people don't.

I've done this at work and I have gained the respect of all of my coworkers for my drive and determination to lose weight.

Totally agree with LLV. I would just say "No thanks, I would prefer X." If people get pushy about food, I just push right back. I don't eat anything I don't want to eat, I don't care if it's a special appreciation breakfast or my coworker's prize winning pie.
  • It sounds corny, but when I know I'm approaching a corny situation, I visualize myself responding in the way I want. Perhaps a better way to say it is I practice saying no to myself first.
  • I agree with LLV... a polite "no thanks" and stick to it! I'm with LLV too in that NO ONE could pay me to put that crap into my mouth or embarrass me or make me feel pressured into it. Just be as polite as you can be... but do NOT let anyone coerce you into eating something that is bad for you... not one bite of it! There ARE possible exceptions... example when I visited a friend I had not seen in years and she had made our all time favorite cheesecake to welcome me... I ate some... but that is very rare and this work situation is not one of them IMO.
  • Thank you all so much for all the great advice. I must have been having a very weak moment yesterday to even THINK that I would want to eat something like that. I've changed my mind set around by thinking 'I could have this sweet treat, because nothing is stopping me - but I CHOOSE not to have it because for one thing, it's not healthy for my 'new' body, and another it would make my workout to be for naught'. And the name of the game we are all playing is to be healthier. It's just not worth it to give in.

THANK YOU SOOO MUCH for helping get my head on straight!
