Help with a shopping list, please!

Hi everyone! So many here have done wonderful jobs and I know I need some help form you guys.. my family doesn't eat very well and I keep encouraging them to do this with me and eat better but it's a slow.. slow progress with them. My mom is kinda bringing in some better stuff but makes a little for herself so I guess it's time for me to do it for myself? I'm only 17 so I have a small budget. Can anyone help me on things I can buy tonight at the grocery store? Like what kind of protein can I pick up that's not meat or what kind of things full of fiber. I've been "shopping" around on the forum but I still need a little advice. Thanks in advance:).

Oh and are the WW snacks good? I'm just counting calories but sometimes I get huge urges for chocolate and thought maybe I could try to get myself eating those instead?

You could hit the protein and the fiber with beans. If you don't eat them now, start with lentils or split peas: they're easier to digest and shouldn't give you gas as your body adjusts to eating more fiber. Plus, they are rediculously versatile, especially in soups.
Eggs are another good source of non-meat protein, and even though they do have fat, it's a healthy one!

If you do dairy then cottage cheese and low/no fat cheeses are a good source of protein. Tofu is another option. Cottage cheese and eggs are both very cheap and pretty versatile. If you do fish then get tuna.

Keep the WW snacks down to a min. It's better to eat real food. If you're just dying for chocolate buy just one snack size REAL chocolate bar and savor it slowly, or try a low fat fudge pop. These last a long time and taste good and chocolaty and they are far cheaper than WW snacks. Good luck going veggie. I could never do it. I love meat. :)

I am really impressed you are trying to do this at your age with minimal support. Way to go!

I'll keep those in mind when I go! Yeah, I figured they were pricey so those were just a thought:). I like beans so that will be no problem.. but I don't really have a way to make the eggs (stove doesn't work).. hmm. But the dairy sounds good:). I love tuna too so I think I'm going to start eating that again. Thanks for the great tips, I never think of those whenever I go;).

Thanks a bunch:). I've been wanting to do this for years but since finding this site I knew I was ready thanks to the support on here.. or else I really wouldn't have any!

Look in the deli section. Some delis sell eggs already hard boiled for 25 cents each. You could buy 2 dollars worth and save them for snacks or make low fat egg salad *if you like it* and eat it on celery or reduced fat wheat thins.

When I get a craving for chocolate (which is often) I eat a Special K cereal bar with chocolate drizzled on top. They are only 90 calories and I think 1 point for WW and they are not really expensive but good!

If you have a microwave, you can try this recipe [http://www.goodnuke.com/recipes/hardboiled.htm] (if the link is screened google microwave hard boiled eggs and it should be the first hit.

I am not a meat eater, so protein is hard for me to get in as well. When I found out I could get 14 grams of protein out of 1/2 cup of non fat cottage cheese, I jumped for joy. But plain old cottage cheese is kind of boring so I now spice it up with a cup or more of roasted veggies. Do you have access to a working oven? Roasting veggies in advance has saved me from opening the fridge and staring at a bunch of raw veggies and just not being motivated to cook them.

Thanks gals:), You've all been a big help! I'll check out the deli section tomorrow and see what I can find or else I'll just try that recipe. I didn't know cottage cheese had even NEAR that much.. wow:D. I don't like cottage cheese by itself but I could try that or maybe even honey if I wanted it to go sweet;). I love the Special K bars, I think I will pick those up:).
