"You are obese" ~ The truth hurts...

For me this diet struggle hits home. I have been dieting well over the majority of my life. I have finally made a commitment to myself to succeed this time. In doing that I have researched and researched and then planned.

My research led me to a BMI calculator. So, I type in my info...low and behold it was not the number I was expecting and right there on the chart I was in the, "You are obese" catagory! WOW!! Seeing that plain as day staring me in the face how can I NOT get on board this time?!

I'm not going to lie, I never really saw myself as obese so I wasn't expecting that and it hurt, I mean REALLY hurt! It set me back and knocked me down a few notches!

Maybe that's what I needed this time, I don't know, but what I do know is I can't live with obesity. It's not an option, I want to start a family someday.

LLV 01-11-2006 09:49 AM

Yep, I've been there, in the "obese" category. It slapped me in the face as well. "Fat" or "overweight" I could handle. But when I saw "OBESE", I was like holy crap, I'm obese. I'm obese. I'm obese. I had to keep repeating it until it finally sunk in.

I didn't wanna be "obese" anymore. That and I told myself I didn't want to be a "fat mom". I wanted to lose it before my son started school (he started Kindergarten this past Fall) and I did it. I didn't want to be ashamed of myself, waddling down the school hallway with my son, having the kids poke fun (because they do and they will) or have Shane go through being teased by the kids - "Shane's mom is fat! Shane's mom is fat!"

So I got off my arse and made a committment to myself. I had said "this time I'm going to do it" too many times, only to completely fail. I was tired of failing.

RobertW 01-11-2006 10:36 AM

My goal weight (242#) will still leave me "obese" by BMI standards. BMI's are meant to be a rough estimate of what you should weigh; let the mirror be the final judge.

Miaka 01-11-2006 10:53 AM

Many of us are obese, we just don't know it!

Just to clarify a misconception. Obesity is an indicator of body fat instead of BMI (or body weight). A high BMI is an indicator that you might be obese or incredibly buff. But the truth is many of us are actually obese. Imagine me at 125 lb and have a body fat percentage of 34%. Guess what, I am obese. So don't lose heart and start exercising!

Kamily828 01-11-2006 01:02 PM

I always thought of myself as just fat until one day I read my chart at the doctors office. In big red letters at the top was OBESE That hurt!

Tealeaf 01-11-2006 02:20 PM

Ya, for the longest time I refered to myself as "heavy". That seemed so much nicer than "fat" or god forbid "obese". But I think it did me good when I finally accepted that 260 pounds on a 5'4" frame is way beyond "heavy".

YP1 01-11-2006 02:25 PM

260lb on a 5'9'' frame is obese too...

I never really thought of myself using "that word", that was for people heavier than me. I didn't actually know what I weighed for a long time anyway, which made it easier to ignore, but once I found out my weight and put it into a BMI calculator I nearly died of shock. 38.1.

It's now 25.3, and what a difference it makes :D It's not the only indicator I go on, but at the end of the day almost all the numbers whether it's weight, fat, BMI or whatever need to go down, so down it went ;)

Valerie Joy 01-11-2006 02:30 PM

The first time my doctor called me obese I was shocked. I knew I was overweight but I had always thought this word was for someone else.

Mel 01-11-2006 02:32 PM

As Robert said, BMI shouldn't be your only indicator. I did a body fat test on a new client yesterday. Her BMI was 24.7, which put her in the healthy range, but her body fat was 38.5% :o I NEVER used the word obese in a siutation like that because the real issue is that she is "deconditioned and undermuscled". Through training, she will probably lose some scale weight, but her goal is to change her body composition, not necessarily her BMI or scale weight.

Just another view. A healthy BMI and scale weight doesn't mean heallthy and fit.

Mel

Kamily828 01-11-2006 03:32 PM

Im 261 at 5'4" and my BMI is 44.7 :o

mam43711 01-11-2006 03:47 PM

ya..I remember taking mine and it was 46% which was mind blowing.. but just take it day by day and that number will surely go down...

YOU CAN DO THIS!

LLV 01-11-2006 04:16 PM

I'm 5'5 at 141 pounds and my BMI is 23.6.

Kamily828 01-11-2006 04:17 PM

Thats what Im doing.....taking it day by day.

LLV 01-11-2006 04:18 PM

Uhhhh, 141 and holding. My weight just won't budge because I'm getting too close to my goal and my body is saying, "Noooooo! I won't let go of that last 8 pounds, and you can't make me!"

And why does my signature keep disappearing?

YP1 01-11-2006 04:30 PM

I think it only appears on your first post on each page.

LLV 01-11-2006 04:31 PM

Oh, really, lol. I didn't know that, thanks :)

Well, no, it showed up in this one too.

Oh well, not that it matters, I was just curious.

Yogini 01-11-2006 04:32 PM

My BMI is 39, morbidly obese, according to those standards, I am sure!

I am 5'10 and my body fat percentage is 27%. I am a very active and muscular woman. My bloodwork and stress test results put me at a very healthy place indeed. It's good to remember that all these things matter, not one isolted reading or number.

At my top weight of 284, I saw in my chart that the doctor wrote Morbidly Obese! I made me so sad - but it was true: "The term morbid obesity refers to patients who are 50 - 100% -- or 100 pounds above -- their ideal body weight. BMI (body mass index) value greater than 39 may be used to diagnose morbid obesity also.

Hopefully as of my next weigh in I will not longer be morbidly obese!!:carrot: (Just obese!:o )

Tansey 01-11-2006 05:03 PM

While I'm not happy many of you had to go through this phase as well as me, I am however happy that I'm not doing it alone! I felt alone and scared in that one moment and now realize it has effected may of you as well.

Thanks for the encouraging words and we can do it!

L.J. 01-11-2006 05:39 PM

Wow Mel....your stats are AWESOME!!

HOw long?? WW?? Core/Flex??

Great Job!!!!!!!!!!

LAnneCarrington 01-11-2006 06:59 PM

There was never any question in my mind that I was obese; when I realized it then, I knew I had to do something, being my BMI at the time teetered near 60 (59.9 to be exact). It is now down to 50.8 but yes, I am still obese. There are days when I feel totally ugly and not worthy of anything nor anyone, but then there are others--as of recently--where I am thinking I have made all this effort and if anyone likes me, great, if not, that's fine too.

And of course, the scale and BMI calculators may lie sometimes, but I found that clothes never do!

bbbabe 01-11-2006 07:33 PM

i am 5'8 and 197lbs and obese

stagemomx3 01-11-2006 07:46 PM

bbbabe- You are just barely in the obese category, one more pound and you will be merely overweight!

I did a happy dance the day I moved from the obese to the overweight category!

bbbabe 01-11-2006 08:04 PM

Michele i cant seem to get down that one damn pound! lol oh well

yukimfat 01-11-2006 09:34 PM

Scary isn't it! now i have put my highest weight into a BMI calculator ( i wasn't game when i was at that weight! ) I was morbidely obese! Well that just sux! a BMI of 41!!!!!!!!! OUCH!!!!!!!!!!
Ok I must admit i did a little happy dance when i got to "normal"! I know it is just one way of measuring and not really that accurate! (not accounting muscle mass) but hey!!!!!!!!!!!! I just want to stay in that NORMAL and i am happy!!!!!!!!!

But consider too! according to the BMI method... Arnie Swartzanigger is OBESE! (and yes you guessed it I cannot spell!LOL)!
