~WATER~ any tips are greatly appreciated.

I understand the importance of drinking alot of water throughout the day, however I am having a hard time convincing my hand to reach for my water bottle lol.
UUUggg...I am only getting in perhap around 25 fl. oz a day of just plain old H2O.
I prepare my water bottles at night, and throw them in the freezer so that they are nice and icy cold the next morning, but never manage to get drink more than 1 1/2 of my 16.9 oz bottles.
It's thought that perhaps adding crystal light to my water might help me to increase my intake...but I really don't like any of the flavors I have tried so far.
I have completely cut out soda, all kinds. (I don't drink diet soda cause I hate that nasty after taste)
I WAS, before Sept 1st..drinking nearly a 12 pack of regular Coke or Pepsi a day. :o
I actually don't miss drinking soda AT ALL and I am saving a lot of money lol

Anyway's I welcome any idea's that you might have that will help me drink more water.

TMunday 09-14-2005 09:39 PM

WOW!! That is a lot of pop in a day! It normally takes me a whole day to drink one or two cans. I am a slow drinker lol. There is always an open can in my fridge because I can never even finish 1 can lol.

Have you tried tea? Iced or sun? I found a couple crystal lites that wasn't bad but I can't remember what they were. It has been awhile.

What about flavored waters? I am not sure what the calories or anything are. It has been forever since I have bought them. But I do remember they taste pretty good.

Ice water with a lemon rubbed on the mouth area and then dropped into the water? Or a lime?

I don't know about anything else. But I will be watching to see what others say! I could always use some tips on this too! Great topic Lisa!

DesertDustBunnies 09-14-2005 09:46 PM

Well, I tried the Walmart flavored water...and got the aftertaste lol :barf:

But....I haven't tried squeezing lemon or lime in my water...sounds quite refreshing lol. will try that and see how it goes.

I may just have to get the old duct tape out and tape the water bottle to my lips LMAO..perhaps a permanent H2O IV line right into my veins haha.
I am having a vision of me going on my walks each morning with the dog/leash in one hand and wheeling my IV pole with the other.

TMunday 09-14-2005 09:52 PM

LMAO!!! Sounds like a plan to me! I will join ya with an identicle IV lol. I never can get the water in either. I can't stand water much.

The walmart brand was ok. We tended to buy it more then the crystal light brand because it was cheaper. Both of them I beleive did have an aftertaste though.

Hey... another thought is throwing a few peices of pineapple in the water too! Maybe even grapefruit or a peach? Not sure.. this is something to think about now lol.

SillyFluff 09-14-2005 09:54 PM

Well I'm having trouble drinking alot of water as well...I just don't like the taste of our tap water.

I've been watering down kool-aid with very LITTLE sugar in it. Its the only way I can make sure I get the water in until we get those new water filters put in.

DesertDustBunnies 09-14-2005 10:04 PM

Our water is really good...lol compared to city water. We have a well on our property, everyone does out here in in the boonies lol, so our water comes straight from the ground...no added "stuff" to it. No water bills either lol.
I could probably bottle it and make a bomb selling it lol. MMMMmmmm :s:

I do drink "hot" tea every day in fact...I was born and raised in Scotland (I'm a Scotty) so cold tea or "ice" tea...well...eeewwwww lol. when my tea gets cold..it goes down the sink hahaha

ohhh and I make a great cup of tea but i am not usre if you can count that toward your water intake because of it having caffiene in it.

Anyone know if you can or not??

oh and I drink coffee too :o (lol, I gave up soda (for the sugar reason) but never said anything about giving up caffiene lol)

TMunday 09-14-2005 10:10 PM

Lisa lol.... I don't think it matters... to an extent of course. I was told to watch the calories (I am a calorie counter) because those will add up after awhile. I was told also that caffiene free would be a better choice. ;)

I am the biggest coffee addict lol. I drink coffee like you used to drink pop!! However, I have cut back a lot. I use to make over 6 pots a day and drink them! Now I might make 4, but I share them!! Lol. And now my cup is smaller and I have less splenda in them (as of 2 days ago) lol. So I am still trying to cut back olol.

~*~*~*~*~*~

Sillyfluff.... not a bad idea!

chick_in_the_hat 09-14-2005 10:28 PM

I make unsweetened Kool Aid - but I use splenda in place of the sugar....I'm a big fan of splenda - it doesn't have that nasty aftertaste the other sweeteners have.

DesertDustBunnies 09-14-2005 10:32 PM

LMAO Tracy...I was reading your post...and then had to re-read it...I first thought you said you drank 6 CUPS of coffee a day...I was going to say that I drink about that much too...then I re-read your post and seen it was 6 POTS, lol
YIKES....if I drank that much coffee...I would be peeing like a race horse. 6 cups makes me pee like a donkey as it is hahahaha...
Good luck to you on cutting back on the coffee...
mabey we can make a weekly goals up on the other thread.....me..increase my water intake slowly until I reach a good intake amount and you can slowly decrease your pots of coffee....how about it???

PhotogirlTX 09-14-2005 10:41 PM

I love water.. but it has to be ice cold (meaning with lots of ice) and a straw. I seem to be able to drink more of it down that way.

good luck!

DesertDustBunnies 09-14-2005 10:46 PM

WOW cherie...
I think you may have the solution I need. STRAWS...you know seriously, I do drink more if I have a straw. If I go out to a resturant, I won't drink the glasses of water they offer or even the soda unless they provide straws.
I never even thought of straws....I'm going to run over to my neighbors and see if she has any and if not...will take a ride into town tomorrow and buy some.

thankyou....I think your idea..may work!!

princesspuffypants 09-14-2005 11:11 PM

Crystal Light Peach Iced Tea... its like crack. its SO good. i think it actually makes the water colder too. it tastes SOOO good... yum.. why does mine have to be at work :(. i just dump a little into the bottle and shake. i make it a little stronger than it should be, i make one little pot last for 3 12oz bottles. SO good. So SO good

UntilMOMMI 09-15-2005 12:17 AM

I used to write on the side of my water jugs with permanent markers. I would have messages on the top, middle, and bottom... like "almost done", "just a little more" ... lol. It's seems a little bit silly, but it worked for me for a while... then just became a habit.

DesertDustBunnies 09-15-2005 12:55 AM

Thanks guys for your suggestions...

ummm..princess..LOL your reply kinda shocked me a little...Crystal Light Peach Iced Tea... its like crack. its SO good. (actually reading this made me choke and spit out my coffee LMAO)...I'm sure that was a....ummm..... typo?? Right??

anyway's...thnks again...lot's of good idea's.

TMunday 09-15-2005 09:57 AM

Lisa, Lol... that is how my hubby is too! One sip and it is time to go to the bathroom lol. I could drink 3 pots and then finally use the bathroom haha. I have a well trained bladder lol. I never use public bathrooms either!!! I have been that way since I can remember. My family hates it. But I think it is nasty! I don't care if I am sick as a dog and don't have a choice... I will not use it haha.

~~~~~~~~
Straws is a good idea too! I may need to check that out too! :)
~~~~~~~~

UntilMOMMI.... that is cute! Lol. It might sound silly but it sounds like positive reanforcment (sp?) to me!! That is awesome! I might try that too!

hefty1 09-15-2005 10:24 AM

hi all try going to www.kraftcanada.com. then go to whats cooking. there ia an article in the summer 2004 mag about water . it explains why we should drink water. :) glen

FishWoman 09-15-2005 01:00 PM

I really like water. I drink probably 10 big glasses each day. Of course I am able to get up and use the restroom whenever I need (usually every 90 minutes or so!)

I allow myself one diet coke per day, and however many cups of hot tea I can drink. When I was at law school, the diet coke allowance went up :D but the water intake was never decreased. It took about two months to go back to only one soda/day.

LovesBassets 09-15-2005 01:12 PM

I have a serious "water problem" myself :dizzy: . I bought myself a 64-oz pitcher with the ambitious plan of being sure I drank the whole darn thing every day. LOL...it's been sitting in the fridge (full) since the day I filled it. I now literally FORCE water down my own throat. I can't have a Diet Sprite unless I drink a cup of water first, etc. I don't know what my problem is...it's so bizarre.

TMunday 09-15-2005 01:16 PM

Kate, I did the same thing lol. I also thought if I bought the bottles from the store (like a case of pop) I would grab that instead of pop or whatever. Didn't work either. :( It is rough lol.

Tealeaf 09-15-2005 02:06 PM

I think that it's very important to drink enough water to be properly hydrated. I also think that some dieters overrate the concept of "drink lots of water". I don't think that being overhydrated does anyone any good, save for burning off calories spent running off to the bath room every half hour. Dieting is stressful enough without adding things to worry about, like "am I choking down enough water?"

Water in tea, coffee, and soda "counts" in my book. So does the water in food. Unless you are living off of beef jerky and dried cereal, you are probably getting a fair amount of water just by eating. I think that going by one's thirst level one can tell if one needs to drink water or not.

sarahyu 09-15-2005 02:12 PM

You can get some of the extract flavorings in the spice aisle and add a splash or 2 to your water bottles before you freeze them. They have quite a few different ones, that way you won't have the artificial sweetener aftertaste. Then if you do have a favorite sweetener you can add a packet or 2 or not.

Straws are great, cold is good, I've also watered down the crystal light. Have you tried to replace some of your tea with decaf? Or can you taste a difference?
Sounds like you have the hang of it. Eveyone has given you great advice.

edited to add: I go by the color of my urine to check the amount of liquids going in-if it's clear to pale yellow it's ok and I'm getting enough liquids.

Sarah

TMunday 09-15-2005 02:18 PM

Annie, I thought that way too. Until I got my nose chewed off lol. Now, well.... I am neither here nor there really.. I just drink when I feel the need. I remember someone telling me that caffinated drinks are dehydrating and not considered a water intake. I thought the same.. made of water! But the reason I don't flip about water intake is this.. my mom is a water-aholic! She drinks water ONLY!! She drinks it 24/7. She probably drinks 3 plus gallons of water a day! And she is (well was before her chemo therapy for lung cancer) over weight and on WW! So I am not so sure how I feel about water honestly. It is a catch 22. I don't flip if I don't get it, but I do try to get at least 1 bottle (16 oz.) of plain water in, in a day.

TMunday 09-15-2005 02:22 PM

My last post wouldn't post!

Sarah....... awesome! The urine test is perfect! My doc told me about that awhile ago! It is an awesome way to make sure eveyrthing is in good shape! :)

Annie, I've heard that alot lately. I hope/think it's true! I don't subscribe to the "drink 100+ oz of water a day to lose weight" kind of philosophy...mostly because it sounds like some kind of evil torture to me -- y'know how in old war movies the bad guy ties the good guy to a table and pours water down his throat? That's what "100+ oz of water a day" sounds like to me! Blech. And I don't think excess water really does all that much for weight loss anyway -- just my opinion, so I hope no one jumps all over me for saying that. I know what lots of water DOES do -- and that is it activates your diuretic hormones so the more water you drink, the more water your body releases (and therefore, the less you retain). Viola! Weight loss!

My problem is that I KNOW I'm not properly hydrated. And I don't mean properly (overly?) hydrated for a "dieting" person, but for a NORMAL person. I'm thirsty a lot...but I just don't want water for some odd reason. I reach for a diet soda or (caffeinated) tea. I wake up thirsty in the morning, especially if I've exercised the day before. I think it's linked to my 8 years of teaching...teachers NEVER get a chance to go to the bathroom (they have the highest rate of UTIs among all professions), and for years drinking water = having to pee but not being able to = standing in front of a class of 12-year-olds for an hour desperate for the restroom!!

I have a problem getting in 16 oz of water a day, much less 64 oz (or whatever the heck the "recommendation" is). I'm working on it, tho. Not for weight loss, but just for general health :) .

Not only in *your* book - but there have been studies done recently that strongly support those statements (that water in other beverages and foods does count towards intake).

Check out this post ==> Does water REALLY help?

TMunday 09-15-2005 06:27 PM

Mrs.Jim..... I have heard that too. How do you personally feel about water intake?

TMunday 09-15-2005 06:29 PM

Oops... that is basically where that link went lol. Sorry.

SwimMom 09-16-2005 12:46 AM

I think this is the best thread I have been on here yet! You gals are all so funny. I have a hard time with the water thing too. I really like the Gatorade Black Cherry Sports water. It only has 10 calories a serving (about 30 a bottle) and tastes really good without any funky aftertaste. I also dilute my favorite juice with water just so I have flavor in it. Also, have any of you tried Stevia Extract. It's a plant derived sweetener. (I'm allergic to artificial sweeteners and Splenda. They give me a headache.) I got some Stevia at a health food store and added it to my water with just a touch of lemon or lime. Tasted almost like lemonade. Best if served really cold though. My problem with water bottles is that I always lose them! As for coffee, I drink 1/2 a cup and end of back and forth between bouncing off the walls and running to the bathroom. My body just can't hack the stuff. Oh, and the straw idea... Hey, I was going to say that...lol.

TMunday 09-16-2005 07:49 AM

I understand about the sweeteners giving people headaches. I went through that with all of them execpt splenda myself. I don't understand how Splenda gives a headache thought because it is made from real sugar. Weird. I have not found the stevia anywhere around here to check that out.

Anyway.... have a nice day. I am not awake yet and can't think lol. Going to have some coffee lol.

srmb60 09-16-2005 01:27 PM

I wonder if the water thing is 'in the news' a lot lately because of the low carb thing. If you're going to be ketotic, you do need to super flush your poor over worked kidneys.

TMunday 09-16-2005 02:15 PM

Now that is possible too! But WW has always commented on how important water is as well. Either way... I think it is basically blown out of proportion most of the time. I mean, as long as people are drinking crystal light, tea, coffee, some pop, gatorade I don't see much of a problem. As long as people aren't chugging down alcohol... someting is better then nothing. :) Just my opinion.

~whitedove33~ 09-16-2005 05:17 PM

I just finished my first 2 liter bottle today...I drank 2 2 liter bottles yesturday...and loved what the scale told me this morning.....the more you drink...the more you flush out...the more you lose.....so that is a great motivator for me

TMunday 09-16-2005 05:21 PM

Are you weighing yourself every day???

~whitedove33~ 09-16-2005 05:32 PM

Yeah, I check my weight everyday....

TMunday 09-16-2005 05:34 PM

I thought about doing that too. But I was told it would not be a good idea. I was told just to weigh in once a week, same time, same day, same clothes. Which is one thing I did wrong this past week! I wore heavier clothes lol. Well, hopefully next week will be a good week haha.

Dreaming 09-16-2005 05:56 PM

If you have Le Natures Ice Waters in your area it has just a hint of fruit flavor. It has no sugar and no artificial sweetners. If is very good

princesspuffypants 09-16-2005 06:44 PM

nope, not a typo. its SO good. its addictive like crack... lol

SwimMom 09-22-2005 06:22 PM

If you work you might want to try this: The average worker works 8 hours a day. If you drink a 16 oz. bottle of water first thing in the morning (before coffee even) and then drink another bottle every two hours you will have it all in before your work day is over and not have the nighttime bathroom issues that can come up. If you don't work you might try the same thing. If you know you are going to be in the car at the beginning of the hour you need to drink water, bring it with you. I've been trying this and if I have it set to a clock, it helps remind me to drink. (I've had 6 glasses so far and it's only 3pm). Hope this helps.-SwimMom :dizzy:
