I have one of those old-fashioned mechanical scale. Depending on how you stand on it or how flat it is on the floor, it can be off a pound or two in either direction. For me, I look at the scale, and once it says a lower weight, I grab it. It's like my body wants to be that lower weight, so I put it out there even if the scale is a little wonky. I think the body has its own brain in a way. It is not our "thinky" brain (I'm stealing from Stumptuous), but our original primal or reptilian brain that we had as we emerged from the primordial ooze. That brain is interested in survival and procreation and it still lives within us. If I can guide my body to feeling safe and worry free from famine, then perhaps it will let go of some of this body weight that doesn't allow me to run fast from danger. (I'm trying to think like a reptile here.) Anyway, that's what I think about as I write down the lowest weight my wonky scale shows. And what really makes me happy is when I am consistently below a big tick on the scale, like a 0 or a 5. So my next big tick would be to be below 230. Although I forgot to do it today, one of the new things I've been trying is having a teaspoon of vinegar diluted in water before meals. This is supposed to lower your glycemic and thus insulin response. Since insulin is the fat storage hormone, keeping it rather low is good. I am a big fan of cold potatoes, so I was happy to find this study that combined cold potatoes and vinegar: www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/16034360 In this study, both glycemic and Insulin Index reduced by 43% and 31% respectively. I'm glad I have a relatively hard-and-fast night eating window that ends at 6:45 pm. I was going to have my snack (which I didn't eat earlier) of an apple and some string cheese but it was very close to the end of my eating window, and I just decided to postpone until tomorrow morning. I find this a useful strategy. I promise myself I'll be able to eat in the morning if I just don't eat now and usually in the morning I'm not hungry.
However, my DH - who has been in another state trying to sell a house - will be home next week after being away for a couple of months. He will not be used to my new way of eating, and we're going to have to sort it out. However, I have noted he usually likes a snack around 4:30 so maybe we can just move that snack slightly later and call it dinner, since he likes to eat at that time anyway. Old people dinner, haha. I'm 237 now. Seem like i'm doing .05 per week i was 247. I'm not able to do any exercise yet due to asthma acting up. Yesterday my neighbor invited me over for dinner. We had Cod fish and Broccoli with garlic and very like pasta noodles ( about 8 small ones ). He was 240 when he started last year. He is now 180 and he's off a lot of his medication. I'm expect to plateau soon, but i'll just stay on course when that happens.
Wishing you all the best. Let's keep up the good work. |
Hi HarneyEmpire. It sounds like your neighbor can give you some good tips. It's wonderful he invited you for dinner. It's always good to have a supportive buddy.
Today I did my hour of weight lifting with the personal trainer at the gym. I have been doing this twice a week for almost a year. I think it is very good from a strength and mobility point-of-view; however, it doesn't do much for weight loss. I think weight loss is probably 90% tied to eating and maybe 10% to activity. Of course, it depends on how active you are. Anyway, for me, I really have to cut the food down to lose weight. Calories today: 1525 Exercise: 60 minutes of weight lifting and machines at the gym. Normally I post at night, but tomorrow is my weekly weigh-in day, so I wanted to write here my intention that I am going to stay under my calorie budget and do some cardio at the gym. Alternately, I might do water exercise at the pool.

Well, I had my "official" weigh-in this morning. I think I only lost a little over a pound, but it's better than nothing! I am disappointed, though. I'm going to my high school reunion in 2 weeks, and was hoping I would be down to 229. There is still a possibility, although a slim one (see what I did there?). At any rate, I was 249 at my reunion 10 years ago, so at least I will be lower than that. One of the things I wonder is will I need a seat belt extension on the airplane?

I have been having a pretty severe leg pain the past few days, so I wanted to take some aspirin this morning. Normally, I don't eat in the morning because I'm doing IF, but I don't like to have aspirin on an empty stomach so I had a very small breakfast. I worked at the gallery today, and just had an apple for lunch. Normally, I have an apple and two cheese sticks, but I forgot the cheese and I was actually ok with just the apple which surprised me. Anyway, after work I picked up some black beans and ropa vieja which I then mixed with riced cauliflower for dinner. I have a need to eat quite large amounts of food, but luckily I like all kinds of food, so this dinner fit the bill in terms of quantity because the riced cauliflower alone is a big package of 2.5 cups but it's only 80 calories and mixed with the beans it was tasty as it can be quite bland.
My leg still hurts though. Chiropractor tomorrow. Calories today: 1197 Thinking: posting here. Eating window: 7.5 hours. Fasting window: 16.5 hours. |

I saw something interesting on an intermittent fasting FB page. A lady says "we're eating in tonight" when she is going to fast and what that means is her body will be nourished by her own body fat. I thought it was an interesting way to express it. I might try it and see if it works for me. I'm going on a trip later this week which is limiting my online time. But I have been doing super well with my eating, I am sooooooo glad I have an eating "window" because it is mentally easy for me to turn down food if I'm not in my eating window. My DH, who just returned from a 2-month trip, was eating pistachios and watching TV next to me. He apparently shelled a handful of pistachios for me, and "surprised" me with his sweet offering. I turned him down (he knows I'm watching my diet) and he said "this little pile of pistachios won't make you fat." Then he set them on my chest (I was in a recliner). I tried to give them back, but he refused. I gently gathered them and put them on the coffee table. He means well, but he has absolutely no idea about the mind and body of a fat person, our mental rules and triggers, how one thing can set us off down a bad path. (PS - He ended up eating the coffee table pistachios.) I was actually slightly below 230 this morning, so I'm going to start a Getting out of the 220's thread! All are welcome to join. Thank you for your support. Calories yesterday: 1448 Exercise: Lots of stretching and icing for my leg which is hurting with sciatic pain. Thinking: posting here. Eating window: 8 hours.
