I am about to say forget that scale!

  • When I started this mission to get healthy, I decided the scale is unreliable as the only measure of progress. I must admit it is a disappointment that the scale has not moved, but not discouraging because I am proud of getting my butt up and finally doing something about changing my unhealthy habits. It has officially been two weeks. Prior to the 2 weeks I have been sedentary and, well, a terrible eater. So, I would assume that I would have been osing weight quite easily these first couple of weeks as my body did not see any change coming. Anyways, has anyone else struggled when they first started out in not seing any change on the scale? I did some reading and I know it's not necessarily a bad thing, but still want to see change, you know?
  • I am unbelievably healthier than I was when I was younger, but you may never know it by the scale. Would I rather be younger and thin again eating pizza every night, smoking, drinking beer and Dr. Pepper, etc. or now ~ fatter, yet drinking water, eating fruits and veggies, hiking? I think as long as you're eating right and are active, where you are today is perfect.

And one day, maybe next month, or maybe next year, don't be surprised if you have to wear smaller clothes!
  • Thanks for the word of advice. I am getting healthy and learning how to eat right and exercise. Yesterday I did get on the scale again and seen I have finally started to drop weight. It did make me feel good, but not as good as when I choose to eat something healthy or that feeling of accomplishment after I come back from walking/jogging.
  • I struggle with my scale not moving. (At least it isn't going up!) When I see no movement sometimes I get discouraged. So I know how you feel! One day at a time. You just have to be better than you were yesterday.
  • Having lost and regained more than I care to discuss, this time I abandoned the scale! I have not weighed once. I decided to judge by my clothes (specifically pant size since I have so many from size 2 to 14). I started in 14. I am in 8s now

For me, the scale fluctuated as much as 5 lbs a DAY. Ugh that was too much for me to take and when the numbers didn't budge it depressed me. I am hoping this time I get used to judging pant size and stop myself before I grow out of a pair rather than waiting until I have to buy a bigger pair because all the others are too small (the size 14 pair was a new addition...) Or judge by fitness (today you are able to do 2 more burpies or run slightly further). There are many ways that are not scale dependant! Or weigh monthly, some people swear by that.
  • The scale is a tool. A tool that measures. A tool, that is only one of many, in a journey to a healthier lifestyle.

We need not be a slave to it, but I do think it should be consulted periodically, just for the data. But there are so many other ways to keep track of your progess and be accountable.

Workouts, can you do more, your shopping habits, more veg, fruit, lean protein, your health numbers and your Dr., and meds, or that you get to get off some, your clothing size, how you feel.

Really, it's just what ever works for you.
  • Sometimes it takes time - the scale has know to sit still. But my dear you must hang in there! Remember 80% is your food intake - calories, and only 20% is working out. So remember the most important thing is to watch your calories - they have many free apps to help you do this, and you can because your worth it!!
