I think its great you're giving up soda! It so bad for you and you are doing a great thing for your body! :)

Thanks! I feel soo much better that I'm not drinking it either. Of course the cravings are there, but I haven't given in yet and don't plan to!! When I drank soda, I felt like I always had a gross-ish feeling around my chest/upper stomach area. Like too much sugar or syrup type of thickness-gross. When I stopped soda completely, I felt so clean and physically better than I did before. It was well worth it!

I did switch to diet ...I count calories to lose weight and my soda has zero calories ....no nutritional value either, but no calories. I also drink 8 glasses of water with lemon each day, so more water less room for soda. I'm still losing weight.

The thing with me is that if I have ANY soda, I'll want more and give in more. So personally it's just better for me to cut it off completely. That way I also get the benefit of losing faster as well as I watch my eating too. I do drink plenty of water and am actually appreciating water a lot more because it's been making my body feel so much better. Of course, I know it takes time for your body to completely clean itself out. And that's great you're still losing weight! I wish I had more control like you with the soda thing but I just can't seem to do it lol. So props to you! Thanks your the reply. :)

The scale is only one tool, in the journey to a healthier lifestyle.

It is a useful tool, but should not be the end all, be all of success.

I do weigh myself every morning, but I also track everything I eat, so I know, that sometimes up or down, can depend on what I ate or did not eat, the day before. If I lifted hard, it's up. That's a given. Muscles are doing what they do when you challenge them.

In my opinion, it's better to focus on building good habits, that will give you a healthy lifestyle, and good, numbers, on your blood work, than on what the scale says.

Yes, weighing yourself this much is bad in so many ways. Firstly, it keeps you from living your life. And you need your body and mind focused on living. For work, for pleasure, for sex, for sleep, these are the things your body needs to do to stay alive. Getting on the scale all day long is an exercise in self abuse. It keeps you focused on stalling. It's also so de motivating to go up and down in numbers especially since you KNOW that the numbers will fluctuate. Plus, have you ever waited for a pot of water to boil? It takes forever if you watch.

Weightloss will happen. It takes time and you can't speed up that time. It's also such a bore to keep track of it on most days and there are so many other ways to keep track of progress. Clothes are an even better indicator of progress, how you feel being a close second.

In terms of soda... I don't know, I'm not a big proponent of avoiding anything I like to eat so I don't diet. But a long time ago I did quit drinking diet soda and I found it to be one of the most beneficial things in my life. Artificial sweeteners may reduce your overall caloric intake but they cause so many other problems. For me they made me crave sugar, gave me headaches, and foggy brain. Gosh it's just not worth it to quit sugary soda and get addicted to diet soda. For my own goals diet soda is not a step in the right direction if health is any concern.

Yes, I have waited for water to boil and I feel like I waited hours!! - (I was reading this and even went,"Hmm, good example." out loud lol.)

As for the soda part: Yes, I know diet soda is just as bad as well but I only bought a 24 pk of it just to slowly switch between the diet coke and water, and then just drinking water after the 24 pk is gone. I haven't gotten headaches and foggy brain, I actually got that a lot more with regular soda all together. (I used to drink about 4-5 regular cokes in a day! And every time I ran out of soda, it was like I went cold turkey and it gave me massive migraines because my body craved it. - Also I could NEVER think straight.)

BTW, one good alternative to soda is 1 parts of fruit juice (orange works great, but not the only option!) and 2 parts of fizzy water. It still has calories from the juice, but way less than regular soda and is a bunch healthier too. And I think it tastes awesome!

You know your body best. It's great if you can give soda up completely. I guess it's like smoking...some can just quit and others have to cut back a bit at a time. It took my dad 4 years to completely quit smoking. My addition is diet coke. So, I'm cutting back slowly...

When I Cut back on my diet soda intake, I noticed a great improvement in how I felt. When I tried quitting cold turkey I had terrible headaches. I'm proud of myself for cutting my soda intake almost in half, and as I've said, I do feel better for it.

As far as giving it up altogether....I'm not sure if that will be a goal of mine any time soon. It's is like dessert for me. I'd rather give up all other junk foods and have a little soda. UGGGG!!! LOL

Minnie, moderation is a completely undervalued and misunderstood skill. We live in an all or nothing world, not conducive to moderation in any area of our lives. People really struggle with this so don't sell yourself short for having the body intelligence to enjoy a diet soda once in a while.

Great job in starting to cut down on your soda intake (it took me a year into my journey to stop drinking regular soda). To answer your questions:
--I think you should weigh yourself once a day, at most. Your weight is going to go up and down throughout the day...
--I weighed myself twice a day during the middle of my journey. For me, it was not healthy cause I was getting obsessed and hated seeing a higher number at the end of the day. So, I stopped the 2x a day thing.
--the first 8 months, I lost 25 pounds, I was losing about 1 pound a week...and people noticed the weight loss before I did
--I stopped doing it by just reminding myself weight fluctuates and that weighing myself more than once could lead me to unhealthy behavior
--I weigh myself once a day, in the morning, right after I use the restroom. If I see the scale is effecting my mood, I have my hubby hide it and lay off it for a week.

My advice is, don't expect so much! You will lose weight if you have a plan of some sort. It may stall. You may plateau. Or you may lose big. Just make sure you keep going because if you let negativity (ie weighing 2x a day and being mad you didn't lose anything) in, it could discourage you and cause you to quit. Good luck!

Yes, the bad thing about me is that I do get a bit discouraged from seeing the numbers bounce around so I think I need to stop. You're right. - I shouldn't expect so much. Especially since I kind of sort of almost started my big changes. I used to drink 4-5 coke's a day and changed right away to diet and water, then to just plain water soon. I know just that change alone would make a huge difference, it's just that I think I'm expecting the difference too fast.

It can be if you drink a lot when you drink it. 4-5 cans a day wouldn't be good but I usually have my two. One when I come home from work, and another when I eat dinner, and a lot of water in between. Any doctor that I've gone to said if they had to recommend any drink to regular soda, they'd choose diet if I really wanted the soda-ish part. Or seltzer but seltzer is so gross in my opinion...I always hated it.

I usually like to weigh myself about 3-4 times each week, that way I know that I'm losing weight. The reason I do this is because you can sometimes put on water weight that makes your weight fluctuate.

Yeah, I expect things to happen too fast. It is kind of an obsession, I so badly want to lose so quick that I don't realize how illogical that is right now since I'm weighing myself so often. I also have PCOS and haven't had my time of the month in about two months. (The most without was about 6 1/2 months, so my monthly's are everywhere. - Very unpredictable.) I feel like that situation is kind of getting me on the bloated side which I HATE but just gotta wait it out. :(

Keep up the good work!

Firstly great job in sharing your experience and being honest with us and yourself. Soda is such a tough one to break given all the sugar and other chemicals specifically designed to keep us hooked.

I found that focusing on what I'm 'adding' to my life rather than what I want to take out made things much easier. Instead of focusing on removing soda or chocolate, I focused on what sort of nice tasting yet healthy options I could add which would leave less or no room for the naughty stuff. Personally I love drinking home made ice-tea flavoured with lemon or a little honey. There's actually a really nice weight loss tea with ginger/cinnamon flavours from Nude Tea Australia which helps keep me regular. I have my own kombucha brewing at home which I'd highly recommend drinking daily. You can get a starter pack online really cheap or may even find someone in your local area who is giving them away as they multiply. Give yourself permission to take a break from the scales as that constant focus can be very mentally draining which often leads to sugar cravings. And just remember that everything you're going through others are also. Everything you're trying to beat others have beaten, you can do it :)
