Default If it ain't broke...

Just got back from the doctor's office. She told me the results of my latest blood work: everything in the ideal range, with triglycerides especially low. It seems my high-carb diet isn't doing my lipid levels any harm. This is not to suggest that everyone should follow a high-carb diet, just to do my bit to dispel the myth that high carb equals trouble for everyone.

Now I'm off to San Francisco, where I'll be facing major food temptations for four days. (The project supervisor is a big foodie and always books ultra-gourmet, ultra-interesting restaurants for our team.) I hope I can survive without gaining weight. Correction: I KNOW I can survive without gaining weight. Wish me luck.

Good luck and great results!

And yes.... Our bodies all respond differently to different diets. It's just good you found one that works for you as you obviously have!

I completely agree. The biggest impact on my blood figures has been exercise of all things. Not diet.

When I started running my triglycerides fell dramatically and my good cholesterol went from way too low to through the roof.

I am with Ian. Many years ago, before I lost weight, my doc told me my HDL was a little low. My triglycerides and LDL were always fine. When I started to exercise, my HDL shot up and has been pretty strong since. When I went vegan, my triglycerides and LDL did fall dramatically (below normal) but they have leveled out after a couple years.

That's good to hear. My test results have always been normal as well.

And for the record, my whole family hails from the mediterranean. Their diet is 70% bread and legumes and then rest cheese and vegetables. Very little meat if any at all. Lots of dairy, lots of olive oil. Everyone is living a long and healthy life. My mother eats bread every day like it's going out of style. Has always been 120-125lbs her whole life.

And yes, definitely have fun in San Francisco! I grew up in Southern California but I've been to various parts of northern including SF. In terms of food, chocolate and sourdough bread are some of the known things California has the best Mexican food in the US and although Southern is better than Northern, you should be able to still find some that is excellent. It is also a good place for Chinese food although I'm guessing Toronto also has good Chinese food.

In terms of walking, there are hills, hills and more hills. You'll get plenty of walking in.

Oh please can i go in your place to eat the ultra gourmet food. I have not had my lifetime share of ultra gourmet food yet. Nowhere near it.

Apart from that, great to get so many positive ticks from your doctor and i'm just wondering, how high is high carb anyway? Do you know how many carbs you eat?

I actually didn't take a great deal of notice about the number of carbs i ate on mfp. It was often over the limit for my calories while i struggled to get the protein up and keep fats down.

but its a general question any one may answer, how many carbs is considered high carb. I mean what is the minimum it could be. 100? 150?

I wonder if there's a range between which it is fine for most of us who are not insulin resistant and possibly too high for those who are? What do others think about that possibility? Actually i'm going to start a new thread with a questions about insulin resistance and carb eating. Please join in. I'll put it in the chatter forum.

Congrats on finding the sweet spot that works for you! And if you gain a little weight on really, really spectacular and unusual foods, so what? Come home and take it back off. No luck needed. Will you please start a food porn thread when you get back and tell us foodies what you had?

100 carbs is considered borderline low I think. about 60% of my calories come from carbs, it varies but that is a good estimate. My range is somewhere from 180 to 240 carbs/day. I'm not insulin resistant but I do have PCOS which is related to insulin resistance. I also used to have hypoglycemia but I haven't had an issue in years (since I gave up meat/dairy).

Thanks for sharing nelie.

Just so its clear, i have an idea about the percentage of normal but just not about the number of carbs. in addition, I'm just trying to think or wished i knew how many carbs I was eating when i was eating so badly. And then it would also be curious to know what sort of percentage that might have represented.

Thank you for sharing that! It is always great to see when other types of diets work even when they are not all super popular at the time lol. Carbs <3

I am diabetic with PCOS & per my doctors I was to be limited to 150-200 carbs. If that helps.

Moderate carb is anywhere from 70-150 net carbs. Higher carb diets fall above that, true low carb and ketogenic diets fall below that.
