Extremely mixed up !

I have regained 30lbs of my 145lb weight loss. I have struggled emotionally to come to terms with this. I have done everything to lose it again. I spend hours at the gym and truly have not eaten enough to justify the gain.I have however given up smoking.
Today I saw someone I haven't seen since the regain. She meant well. I know she did, but her comment "You look better with some more meat on your bones", has thrown me into a total spin. I now feel 300lbs again. I truly don't know how to handle my emotions over this, so am doing what is always best and has helped me so much, and that is to turn to you

I think that smoking really changes your metabolism. You may need to adjust your calorie intake down to compensate for the change since you don't have that boost.

Hopefully some other smokers/ previous smokers can give some more specific advice for you. Good luck.

Starbrite, I'm so sorry you're going through all of this and are having to deal with the emotions involved in it. I agree that smoking does seem to affect one's metabolism. When I quit smoking, I gained 50 pounds seemingly overnight. I realized later -- for me -- it was because I was using food to replace the oral fixation of not having a cigarette to puff on. Not saying this is what you're doing, just relating my experience.

I agree that you might need to adjust your calories downward. I just googled smoking cessation and metabolism and there are several articles that indicate that smoking increases your metabolic rate mainly because it speed up your heart rate (thus leading to heart disease). It said in one article that smoking 20 cigarettes a day is the equivalent damage to your heart of weighing 90 pounds more! WOW.

So, congratulate yourself on stopping smoking. And make some adjustments on your caloric intake and keep up the exercise and you'll win this battle. You have done so well with your weight loss. Don't let this set back take that away from you.

Congratulations on stopping smoking!

I'm sorry but I am no help. Hang in there. 120 lbs down! AWESOME! Keep on kicking butt!

Agree with the other posters. Smoking does speed up your metabolism so would look at lowering the calories. Kudos on quitting!
