The wooosh ...

I keep hearing of the woosh. I wondered if everone gets those. Have some of you never had one? How about and PCOSers, did you get the woosh? I get a few ounces to a pound lost at most-ever. I'm still at 208. Ugh. Let me explain possibly why ..
I have been eatting sometimes bad and sometimes too little this week. I was at the hospital a lot this week with my hubbys son. I have 2 stepkids that we were extranged with(long story short, their real mom didn't want them to like me-I was a threat in her head) and we heard his son was having surgery on his lung. He has pneumonia. So Upon this knowledge we have dived nose first back into the kids stratasphere and they are excepting. My stepson is recoveering well ... stress that is good is still 'stress'.
Then my care in myself has been somewhat lousy ..
Having less nutrition at hospitals as should be, I had pizza, and chicken nuggets at times too little water, this week. Some of my caloric intakes have been less than 1200 cals per day and I have a headache today the size of Arkansas!! lol
As if all this weren't enough my 'tom' started yesterday after being late. So back to that woosh, despite stress and all these things is there ever a possibility I might see mine too? I am exercising though, so there's that. Anyone have similar things going on but due to due dilegence the body let it go in some way. Thanks for sharing, if you do.

Hugs!

You have a lot on your plate. I hope everything works out for the best.

And no, no woosh for me :-(

dangerouscurvesahead 12-15-2012 05:02 PM

i only lost 2lbs for november, surprised i even lost that to be honest BUT i had a 6lb woosh during my TOM in 1st week of december that had me more excited than a kid at christmas lol!

Whooshes are typically from fat loss being masked by water weight, then the water all of a sudden letting go (from my understanding anyway). If you have been in a deficit but it isn't reflecting on the scale, it's possible you MAY see a whoosh. But if your calorie level has been breaking even just due to availability of food and tracking methods even with the exercise, it just may be a simple case of the scale not moving because there's no actual loss.

All that being said, stress can definitely hinder weight loss. If your calorie deficit is for sure solid without question, there's a good chance you may see a whoosh. I've seen them a couple times throughout my weight loss, not very often though.

Here's a good article on them! Of Whooshes and Squishy Fat

I've had whooshes, yes, I tend to lose the normal 4-8 pounds a month when perfectly on plan... But that does NOT mean I show 1-2 pound losses each week! No, I tend to lose a pound, bounce around that pound for two weeks, bounce UP during my time of the month, and then whoosh down 3-4 seemingly overnight. Rinse, repeat. And it is very typical, even for those with insulin resistance as is common with PCOS.

Not every woman follows this pattern, but our bodies are great at balancing out fluid levels and that can mask actually fat loss with water retention. Our muscles also can store immense amounts of water in their repair cycle, if we're exercising. So while our body composition IS changing, the scale only shows how heavy we are at a given time. Hardly a useful metric ;)

Rana 12-15-2012 08:32 PM

I have had 2 whooshes (and probably documented on this site) in my time dieting!

I don't know if it's the PCOS or just simply that my body doesn't whoosh like that...

TripSwitch 12-15-2012 09:19 PM

It always seemed that I had to work really hard for any "whoosh" that I experienced during my weight loss... And by that I mean I had to do something like follow a very strict PSMF for a week or at least severely restrict my carb intake... or just cut calories pretty drastically to create the deficit... basically something along those lines... But after the initial excitement of seeing that big "loss" on the scale it would be followed by a bounce back up of a couple of pounds... Leaving me with a net loss of usually about 3 or 4lbs... Which I know sounds great... but not only was it a lot of VERY HARD work... :dizzy: When I averaged out my losses for the month they weren't much better than when I just stuck with a more moderate approach of consistently hitting my daily calorie and macro targets...

Thedollylala 12-15-2012 09:33 PM

I'm due for a mega woosh the way I've been retaining water -.-

Missy Krissy 12-16-2012 10:08 AM

No, I haven't had any wooshes either. Just small steady losses. I'm sorry to hear about your family stress - it's good that you and your hubby were able to be there for your step-son. When do they expect to release him from the hospital?

susiefleshner 12-16-2012 02:08 PM

I've never heard of wooshes. But I have had plenty of them. Last Sunday I was weighing in at 231 and today I'm 235. I've ate and exercised like I should all week...only to be up 4 pounds. Now I understand what's going on.

Whew dangerouscurves. that is an amazing drop. Congrats. :)

Thank you Stephanie, Taryl and Rana. I'll searh your posts Rana. I know I have seen so much wooshing, I just wondered. I suppose it could be a smaller number on some of us. I know my loss this month is greater than usual. I'll have to see how much more than my 'norm' I can lose in the next cpl weeks to know, I appreciate all your wise info, ladies. You've all done so great!! :)

TripSwitch~ do you have pcos or are those pounds obstinate? I wasn't getting the scale to move w/o major extra minutes of fitness either. where do you have your cals set at? Do you do intense fitness?

I ate a lot last night and got 1 more pound off. I emotionally ate 2 normal sized candy bars.lol I felt so guilty too. Now I'm not so upset I did it though. My visitor was nagging me so I gave in. :)

avalonmoon 12-16-2012 06:12 PM

Thedollylala, I hope you get that woosh. ;)

MissyKrissy~ Thank you. You have down very well for not having big losses per time. Thank you for sharing with me. I'll keep an eye out and keep hoping. lol

When we first started to talk about "whooshes" here, it was mostly in the context of people who weren't losing steadily. They'd diet strictly, but lose nothing, nothing, nothing, and then whoosh.

We "whooshers" envied those who lost slow and steady, because it was hard to know whether you're on the right path when you see no weight loss day after day, and sometimes week after week.

In my fifth decade of dieting, I've learned that there is no universal pattern to weight losses and gains.

Some people lose slow and steady.

Some people "whoosh" losing only every couple weeks or even every couple months, and for those of us who are extra lucky (not) with metabolic issues like insulin resistance, PCOS, thyroid issues.... sometimes we lose as erratically as whooshers, but in as small an increment as the slow and steady crowd.

It's perfectly normal to

lose consistently at a rapid rate

lose consistently at a moderate rate

lose consistently at a slow rate

lose inconsistently, a a rapid weight (awesome whooshing)

lose inconsistently at a moderate weight (whooshing)

lose inconsistently at a SLOW rate (slow whooshing)

Unfortunately, I'm a slow woosher. I have insulin resistance, autoimmune disease, thyroid issues and other metabolic and heal.th issues. I go weeks, and even sometimes months when my weight won't budge no matter how hard I try. Then I'll suddenly lose two pounds. Two pounds isn't a very big whoosh for two months worth of work.

So, no not everyone will loose in whooshes, and even those who do, won't always whoosh in a big way. Personally, I'ld much rather lose slowly and steadily than slowly and inconsistently, but we don't get to choose how our bodies work.

Some people will pretty much stick to one pattern of losing, and another person may see different patterns along the way.

But what we all need to understand is that it's all normal. We're going to lose at whatever pace our body is designed to, and the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence. The whooshers wish they would see steady losses, and the steady losers want whooshes, but there's not much you can do to change your body's natural pattern, and even less reason to try - because both types of weight loss have their advantages and disadvantages (so even if you somehow change your body's pattern, you'll likely wish for the "good old days" when your pattern was different).

When I was younger, I lost fast and steadily at first, and then slow and steadily as the weight loss progressed. I had no idea how lucky I had it. Now I'm a slow and inconsistent loser - even on a semi-crash dieting (which REALLY REALLY SUCKS!!!!).

I've been experimenting with PSMF, drastically cutting my calories hoping to speed up my weight loss, and instead I can barely stay conscious. The less I eat, the less energy I have for anything. It's the same dilemma we face with our fat cat. The less we feed her, the less she moves, and the less time she spends conscious.

I'm kind of at my wits end, trying to find a way to lose weight at a reasonable pace, while having the energy to have a normal life. It makes me want to scream sometimes, but it is what it is. It just makes me realize what an idiot I was in my twenties when I gave up on a diet because I was losing too slow at less than a pound a week. Heck, what I wouldn't do for that "slow" weight loss now.

I don't know whether to think it's sad or wonderful, but it's all "normal" because you'll find people whose bodies follow every pattern imaginable.

I've never heard of the term wooosh before...so it's like a sudden weight drop after not losing awhile even though on track? :?:

Hi avalonmoon... No it seemed like EVERY pound that I lost this time around was just VERY, VERY, OBSTINATE!!! :D

When I lost weight in the past I set my calorie target at around 1500 , but this time around I wanted the weight off... like yesterday... (who doesn't, right? lol..) so I tried 1200... But I always seemed to be "cheating" a little bit and coming in at around 1500 anyway, so I finally just quit trying to kid myself and went back up to 1500... But I would get extremely frustrated with my "slow" losses, which in reality weren't slow at all... So I would do some sort of PSMF for a week or two which would give me a pretty good "whoosh" but then I might not lose anything for the next couple of weeks. It always left me wondering if I could have lost about the same amount of weight by just sticking with a more moderate approach...

And for me at least, when I increased the exercise (my main thing is running) it seemed that's when the scale would become very stubborn and wouldn't want to budge... But it was just my body holding onto water... It came off eventually... Still made me a little crazy at times though... :dizzy:

It sounds like you had an anti whoosh.

I whoosh! And anti-whoosh too, though not to the same extent, I suppose more like a particularly aggressive plateau. Having dropped 2.5 pounds a couple of weeks ago (WOOHOO!), lost nearly a pound each for the last two weeks, then, this week, up two pounds again!

Seems unfair to me, and it's quite demoralising, but bodies are weird. Got to keep...pushing...through!

avalonmoon 12-18-2012 01:45 PM

Kaplods~ Thanks for explaining it like that. I think I'm a wooshless wonder. lol

But I am moving the scale slow at least, now I don't feel hopeless. I was (around the time I asked this question in this post) not getting much by way of scale results..it just took time. So I don't get the big number drops per time like many of you do.
I hope everyone gets their wooosh visit for Christmas. Happy holidays everyone..

TripSwitch~ You have really fought down to almost the last one. So close. You have done amazing with those obstinate little demonds. Congrats on your many losses along your journey.
