Cold??!!
Anyone who has dropped a significant amount of weight have to battle feeling COLD almost all of the time? i went from sweating hot and hating anything over 55 degrees to freezing most of the time (after losing nearly 100 lb's) i do take Armour thyroid but i don't know if my thyroid is affected or this is just something normal? UGHH, it's awful!!

I was always cold while losing weight (which is par for the course), but once I reached maintenance and started eating more calories, the feeling of constant cold subsided. I still get cold occasionally, because I'm not overeating all the time, but it's noticeably less pronounced than when I was in weigiht-loss mode.
If you're eating enough to maintain your weight and you're STILL cold all the time, the first thing I'd look at is your thyroid medication. The dose may need to be adjusted. F. |
I'm almost always freezing, even at maintenance calories. But I've lost about 40% of my original body mass, that's enough to mess with anyone's thermoregulation! The best way to get rid of that feeling, for me, is exercise. Otherwise I'm always varying degrees of cold. It's just the nature of dropping large amounts of weight, you end up effectively hypothyroid compared to pre-weightloss days.

Constantly - but the 145lb blanket I used to wear was very warming !!
|
How about a ginger infusion? It warms and it's very healthy.
|
very cold. all the time.
freelance does have it right, as she said- it's the caloric defecit. i do find that when i eat at maintenance or over that I am significantly warmer, and that I get significantly colder when I am hungry and it's time to eat. A warm mug of tea does the job well! |
I am freezing ALL THE TIME. At work, my lovely maintenance guy has my office temp turned up to 78 degrees. I love him!
My thyroid has been tested and is perfectly normal. My doc says that anyone that has lost 50% of their body weight experiences extreme problems with feeling cold and I've lost 66%. He promises I will regulate, it will just take time. |
Freezing all the time. I wear thermals under my clothes if its under 60 degrees outside now. Layering clothes helps.
|
Yep. I asked two doctors about it, and when they heard I had dropped some 20+ kilos, they said it was normal. It may take a few years for my body to readjust (I think it's on the way, though, because I still haven't turned on the heater this season, and we're almost in December ^^).

I am always cold, but I was cold at my heaviest weight as well. I used to run barefoot in shorts and a tank top in the snow, people would stop in the street and ask me what the heck was wrong with me, weren't I freezing? I never was cold when I was younger. Then my thyroid died a few years ago. Now I am on meds that makes my thyroid normal levels but I am still cold. :brr::brr::brr:

I loved reading all the answers. some good replies. I too am cold a lot but I am heavier,i thoughht my heat would happen once my circulation was better from peeling some fat layers? It's interesting that even those of you pretty low in your numbers are cold. maybe summer will be better?
|
It could be your thyroid condition. I have Hashi's and am hypothyroid and I am often cold, esp. in winter - even when the indoor temp is the same as it is in summer. And I especially am cold at night, at bed time. I often go to bed bundled up in full pajamas, robe, hat, and multiple blankets.

I find that holding a cup of tea really close to your chest warms you. Or putting a nuked heating pad there for awhile. Or just getting up and marching in place in front of the tv, or doing situps. Anything, really.

I was cleared of any thyroid issues on my last doctor's visit. And with that being said, I'm still FREEZING! Luckily I live in the desert and it doesn't get especially cold here, but that doesn't stop me from huddling under the heavy covers while my husband is sprawled out in nothing but boxers, roasting. It makes cuddling difficult sometimes. ;)
I grew up in the Midwest and I was always, always hot. My mom used to say I had my own furnace! Looking back it had to be more than just the layers of extra "padding" on my body, it had to have something to do with how I was burning my food. I know I ate a lot of sugar, and I have the impression that it fuels my fire, so to speak. When I cut it out I no longer get overheated. I really had trouble adapting to the heat when I first moved here in 2007, but this past summer the 110°+ weather felt strangely wonderful most of the time. I'm wondering if it'll change much once I hit maintenance. |
I've never really "run hot" even at my heaviest weight so now I'm freezing all the time. I live in the tropics and I wear a sweater everyday. People always ask me if I'm ill. I can't imagine enduring winters again now. I'm sure your body is a little confused because of the weight loss.

I've lost 90 pounds and am post-menopause, so brrrrr.
It's actually worse for me after I exercise, but that's because I sweat a lot and then get chilled. I've started wearing that therma-wick stuff while exercising and that helps some. |
After losing weight I'm cold all the time. I wear a wool sweater on top or underneath all my clothes depending on how bulky. I always carry gloves, a scarf, and wool socks with me too. I agree with the post above about holding a hot cup of tea close to you to warm you up if you can get your hands on one. I hate this side effect. But I'd much rather be cold than fat :P
|
I was always the last one to put on a jacket, etc., and still am most of the time. Menopause seemed to permanently turn up my furnace without much in the way of actual hot flashes. Now that I'm lighter, on find that things are pretty much the same except for my hands. I had to get warmer gloves and actually bought snowmobile gloves to use when running the snow blower. Other than that, I'm still the last on to grab a jacket.

i am FREEZING, especially in my bedroom. my room was an addition on the house, it also has 8 windows so it doesn't heat well. i get so cold at night during the winter that i have to get up and take a super hot bath or else i cant fall back asleep (sometimes twice).
aside from that, i am always the one setting the bar for whether a room is hot or not. if people are arguing about temperature in my house and i say that im hot, it's the final word that the room is indeed too warm ("see? even JULIA think's its hot!"). if i say im cold, they dismiss me and say, "you're always cold!". lol i also spoke to my doctor as this problem started when i hit about 200 lbs the first time and didnt really go away til i hit 200 again. now im freezing again. he told me the same as a previous poster, it can take YEARS! oh well, id rather shiver than sweat all night, but thats just me. |
Thanks, everyone!
Yes i've lost a significant amount of weight and everything's different about me PLUS i just turned 50 and perimenopause (OH THRILLS) lol, no hot flashes yet. I AM hashi's also and last time i got cold was about 6 months ago and i adjusted my thyroid which helped (adjusted it UP even with a weight loss!) and now i'm back to freezing again but it's Fall going into Winter so.... I am just going to have to forego shorts and a T indoors and layer and wear long pants. i do love hot 5 calorie chicken broth and the ginger tea infusion sounds lovely (and yes ginger is warming). The sad thing is i live on a dead end road that is a hill and i was doing HIIT on it (going up and down about 5 times) and now i'm so cold i couldn't even THINK of doing it UGH |
