Coffee and Your Weight Loss

So I'm curious if anyone else here feels that coffee has played a part in their weight loss?

I used to be a big coffee drinker and than gave it up, but recently I've been drinking it again and I really think it's helping... I definitely "feel" less hungry during the day....

Does anyone else think coffee is somehow helping them along too...

krampus 09-10-2012 02:49 PM

I'm not willing to endure the caffeine withdrawal that comes with "finding out" otherwise. Daily drinker here!

Euphy 09-10-2012 02:49 PM

Definitely. My coffee maker broke a while ago and while I wasn't drinking coffee, I gained weight. Coffee helps suppress my appetite and the caffeine gives me energy. I can only drink a couple cups a day, though.

This exactly. Plus if I'm ever out and the food choices are horrible, I can always opt for coffee to tide me over until I can get better food.

Coffee actually makes me more hungry because it affects my blood glucose levels. In some people, coffee causes hypoglycemia.

This is me as well;)

I'm a huge coffee drinker, but I've always been (since high school, actually), and that was the same through being mildly obese, losing weight, and maintaining my loss. So I don't think it has played any role at all for me, except giving me my daily caffeine fix, of course.

On the other hand, it does make me pee often. Maybe it helps me in shedding water weight? ^^;

Coffee and tea are fine, though I don't notice they help with weight losing particular, they are good for keeping my mouth busy when. I want to eat but am not hungry. If you enjoy them, drink them! They don't cause harm and some people do find they help, but not particularly me.

mimsyborogoves 09-10-2012 03:43 PM

I am enjoying a nice Skinny Cinnamon Dolce latte from Starbucks as we speak. It helps my weight loss in that it makes me happy. ;)

I definitely have found that coffee acts as an appetite suppressant for me. I usually have 1 or 2 cups per day - but they are 14oz reusable travel cups. I have one every morning before breakfast and sometimes mid morning if it is too soon for lunch and I want to hold off snacking. I usually don't drink coffee after dinner, although sometimes I get hungry then too - I am afraid I won't be able to fall asleep!

I think of tea and coffee as zero calorie treats! At night I drink tea or iced tea and during the day I drink black coffee, or a low calorie drink from a coffee shop.

In the morning it signifies that I'm done with breakfast, in the afternoon is signifies I'm done with lunch and tea in the evening shows I'm done with dinner.

I think they are important markers in my day. Mostly I think they keep me busy after a meal and give my head time to feel full after eating.

So they make me happy and in some ways help with weight loss. I wouldn't say they work any miracles but they are nice no-calorie ways to treat myself.

i am a huge, HUGE caffeine consume.

scientifically, caffeine is an appetite suppressant, as well as a proven provider of a little burst of energy. some people need a protein shake? i need a coffee. whatever.

aside from that- i used to LOVE lattes, skinny lattes, unfortunately, i do choose to no longer consume those- maybe 1 every month or so. i do still drink 3-5 cups (12-16 oz cups) of coffee daily, as well as a herbal tea here or there.

I had to decrease my coffee intake when I started my lifestyle change because I found that I didn't drink enough water when I drank 4-5 cups per day. I have only ever drank my coffee black, so there is no difference in calories.

TMI but coffee is just about the only thing that helps me go to the bathroom. :^: It's also stops me from feeling hungry...and I really like it! I can't survive work without it.

kelly315 09-10-2012 08:45 PM

Now that I know that coffee just makes me more tired (except for about an hour long pick me up) I don't really drink it anymore. I like hot drinks, so I do have tea almost everyday. Actually, I feel better in general after stopping coffee.

mimsyborogoves 09-10-2012 09:25 PM

I don't see how some of you drink it black or w/o any sweetener what-so-ever. It's just icky to me that way! Not judging anyone, this just bewilders me, lol.

It totally does this to me. If I'm grumpy because I'm hungry, I'll REALLY be grumpy if I have some coffee (after the initial buzz wears off, which doesn't last long).

Brandis 09-10-2012 10:09 PM

I be lovin' some coffee. It helps suppress my appetite if I drink it in the morning. I also drink it before hard workouts and I will then work out like a BEAST!!! Everybody at work tells me I am not allowed to drink coffee in the morning because i get a little out of control.... Did I mention how much I love coffee? I don't think it's the caffeine alone, either, I think it's the other stimulant compounds combined with the caffeine. I don't get the same effect if I drink most sodas, but I will if I drink really strong tea.

TripSwitch 09-10-2012 10:16 PM

Thanks for everyone's input on this one... I was starting to feel a little bit guilty about my coffee consumption... but now I feel better...

Actually all this talk about coffee has me looking forward to nice cup.... Tomorrow morning of course... :)

ImGoinDown 09-11-2012 01:54 AM

Oddly enough, coffee helps me with my chocolate cravings.

Atarimae 09-11-2012 02:21 AM

I can't seem to drink coffee without adding in cream and sweetener, though stevia and heavy cream would still keep me OP.

That said, I use iced green tea to keep me full when it's not time to eat.

+ hot drinks make me drowsy for some reason!

For those who drink coffee with other things in them, I'm curious to know what you guys add. I'm interested in trying something new! :)

mimsyborogoves 09-11-2012 07:11 AM

I was using non-dairy creamer and two packets of Splenda, but I switched to skim milk because I figure although it has more calories, it's got more nutritional value to go along with it, plus it helps cool down my coffee quicker ;). What I use is no more than 50 calories, anyway, so it's not like it's a plan-breaker or anything. I use just enough to make the coffee cloud up.

shishkeberry 09-11-2012 09:11 AM

My weight loss slowed down dramatically when I stated drinking coffee daily, but that started when I quit smoking. I think quitting smoking had more to do with it.

memememe76 09-11-2012 12:09 PM

I'm Vietnamese, so I use a tablespoon of sweetened condensed milk (about 65 calories), two tablespoons if I am drinking a huge cup of coffee.

But I am a coffee drinker and I love my mochas (although skim milk, no whipped cream), so I sacrifice some foods for the calories I ingest from those drinks.

But besides the fact I enjoy the taste (and it gives me warmth--after losing weight, I am cold all the time), I like that I can nurse a cup of coffee. In contrast, I wolf down everything else. That cup of coffee keeps me preoccupied for most of the day.

vlm3315 09-15-2012 08:28 AM

Definitely.. I started having sugar free redbull and coffee again after two years.

LeilaJey 09-15-2012 09:14 AM

I usually have 1-2 cups in the morning and this often fills me up until lunch time where I eat a bigger lunch, so I guess it does help. I need coffee.

Euphy 09-15-2012 12:56 PM

I use a tablespoon of heavy cream. Any more than that makes coffee taste watery to me. I was bad today and had real sugar because I'm out of Truvia. I was pretty shocked when I added it to my food log, a couple teaspoons has used up almost all of my sugar limit for the day.

time2lose 09-15-2012 01:19 PM

I have found that drinking anything helps me. I think that I am filling space in my stomach with liquid instead solid food.

IsabellaOlivia 09-15-2012 02:03 PM

Caffeine makes me a lot more hungry, unfortunately my latest attempt to ditch the caffeine ended in a massive headache and after three days of feeling like a jackhammer was operating inside my head, I caved.

melodymist 09-15-2012 02:08 PM

COFFEE lover here :)

Prim2012 09-15-2012 03:48 PM

I drink coffee almost everyday. When I crave something sweet (usually after a hearty meal), I will have a small cup of coffee and add a little Land O Lakes Sugar Free Whipped Heavy Cream (20 cals for 2 tbsp and 0 carbs) to give a little foam on top. It satisfies my sweet tooth.
