bar food help!

  • Hey everyone,
My husband and I are going to visit my brother this weekend, which inevitably means two things:
    1) lots of walking (a good thing)
    2) lots of bar hopping/food (not such a good thing)

We always have a great time when we visit my brother, but it pretty much automatically means eating out for every meal and at least one meal at a bar every day.

My question is, what do you guys think is the *least bad* food I could get at a bar, assuming it's the typical bar-type-clog-your-arteries type of stuff? When salad is available I will obviously opt for that, but I'm afraid of a lack of choices beyond chicken wings, pizza, nachos, etc...

    any ideas/suggestions?
    Thanks.
  • Hmm can you suggest going out to a restaurant first or heating up a frozen dinner or buying a salad and eating it at his place beforehand? Otherwise, I guess nachos (around 15 cals if plain I suspect..._ if you exclude the cheese would be the least calorie heavy option as long as you count how many you eat. If you really want to cut cals, then I would suffer through the weekend eating a small portion of whatever has the least sauce (since no one knows how much butter and sugar they throw in there) or you can let go for the weekend and go back to your diet right after.
  • How often do you visit him? My thought would be not to worry about it. Just have fun and don't too crazying with the eating/drinking.
  • Why not see if you can at least do breakfast and lunch at home? i know traditions are hard to break. We all tend to do the same things we always did when we get together with family and friends.

If you have to eat bar food, see if you can get a salad and some wings before they goop them up with sauce. Or a burger and take the top half of the bun off and eat it open faced. Or grilled chicken sandwich done the same way. See if you can get celery and carrot sticks instead of fries as a side.

Good luck Have fun. And no matter what you eat while you're visiting, just get back on plan the very moment you get home.

  • Around here at a dive bar you can usually get a grilled chicken/fish sandwich, or a burger/turkey/veggie burger - just eat it bun-less on lettuce or "open faced" and skip the fries. Maybe skip the mayo, bacon, and cheese. (I always get the cheese - it's worth it!) Sometimes they have salads.

Other bars and cafes in this area often serve tapas (or small plates), so you can try something and it's teeny and not too bad. I just got a roasted radish plate a few weeks ago that was amazing!
  • Yes, I'd get buffalo wings, dry if you can but even if not they aren't terrible for you.
  • Everyone else has already given you great suggestions/ideas so I can't really add anymore other than "Have fun!!!"
  • Thanks everyone!
