I have a banana almost every day. 65lb gone. It hasn't affected my weight loss! :D

I am carb sensitive, and lose best when I keep my carb level around 100g of carbs or less (too much less though and I experience deleterious effects such as headaches, irritability, and in extreme cases dizziness and even
passing out).

To keep my carb level in target range, I use a low-carb exchange plan (modeled after the "high protein" exchange plans on websites like frugalabundance.com). This way, I can "spend" my exchanges any way I want (but I try to use paleo guidelines more often than not).

On exchange plans, all the food/portions within an exchange category have similar calorie and carb content, so I can let the exchange plan "count" the carbs and calories for me, and I just have to "spend" my alotted exchanges.

Most exchange plans use the same exchanges, so on most plans, one fruit exchange can be spent on 1.25 cups of strawberries or 1/2 of a medium banana (maybe 1/4 a cup). I usually choose berries, because I get a much larger serving for for my exchange "buck."

I do still buy and eat bananas and other higher glycemic fruits, I just have to work them into my plan, and try to lower the glycemic index by eating the higher glycemic fruits with fat and/or protein.

Yup. Buy the smallest bananas you can find and only use a half a banana for your smoothie. Put the other half in a sandwich baggie or a plastic reuseable container and pop it into the freezer for the next smoothie. That cuts the calories and the carbs in half.

Ah, I love bananas, I try to limit how many I eat though simply because they always leave me craving for more. :D I also love grapes, but I can't really recommend those either to someone who wants to lose weight. Apples and berries all the way!

Thank for all the replies! I love carbs so I've been trying to stick to about 75 per day as opposed to 200/300 like I used to eat. I picked up some blackberries and rasberries from the store last night! :D

Also some sugar snap peas...never had then before. They are really good! Wasn't expecting them to be so sweet and crunchy

I've been trying to figure out what fruits are low carb and seems like berries are my best bet?

I hate to come off as rude, but doesn't it seem silly to try to do a low carb diet WITHOUT looking first to see how many carbs are in the foods you're eating? It doesn't seem like "low carb" is just something you can go guessing at if you aren't very macronutrient savvy.

Yuummmmm!!! Bananas!!!! Quick, easy, delicious!!! ...and they dance well, too, LOL... :cb:

Good source of potassium... but like everything else I put in my mouth... "all in moderation" :D

I just started my weight loss journey the beginning of last month and used to eat a very carb heavy diet (lots of bread, rice, and pasta everyday) So to cut all that from my diet and eat lots of protein and veggies now is low carb for me. Ive lost 20 pounds by doing this so I don't think it's silly.

Oh no, I don't think your METHOD is silly at all, and congratulations on your loss so far! 20 pounds in less than two months is fantastic! :carrot: I just meant that if your approach is to try and go low carb/keto/high carb/adkins/paleo/cabbage soup diet ... whatever method - it helps to research it first. That way, if you STOP getting results you can go back and figure out why. Being on a plan isn't much good if you don't follow it.

I do see what you mean though, that you're basically going lower carb than you had been. :D

Thought of this thread when I had a banana this morning :)

Mmmm I love me some bananas! I have to eat em in the morning :) also, they may have a higher carb count than other fruits but they are far more healthy and delicious than say a slice of bread. Plus they tend to fill me up and load me on my potassium!

Thinking about this thread makes me want one of the dark chocolate covered bananas I have sitting in the freezer. Guess what I'm having when I get home?

LockItUp 05-16-2012 01:34 PM

Mmmmmm! Maybe I'll bust out my Yonanas tonight and have a banana stawberry "icecrem".
