Scale Addiction
I think my relationship with my scale is getting a little too intense. I had my fiance hide it last night because it is becoming more and more of an obsession. I told him that he's only allowed to give me my scale on Sundays for my weekly weigh in because I was getting ridiculous. Every time I went into the bathroom, even if it was just to brush my teeth I would get on my scale before leaving the room. I was weighing 8-10 times a day, which is not healthy....Then when I came home last night to my scaleless bathroom I nearly had a panic attack from the withdrawal. Le Sigh.

Got the exact same thing.
I try to weigh myself weekly but generally end up doing it multiple times throughout the day because it's just there. I'm considering giving it to my parents and weighing myself once a week when I visit. Ridikularse. |
The scale is a great tool to measure progress. I weighed every day when I was losing. Sometimes I'd weigh at night just to see the difference between night and the next morning. But like anything, total addiction isn't healthy. And it's frustrating, too, because of the fluctuations. I wonder if you could break the habit by putting some restriction on it like having to keep a chart based on time of day and record it on paper every time you weigh. That might get tedious enough to help you cut back.

I don't think it's an issue if you weigh yourself several times a day, I mean - you look in the mirror several times a day too right? To see how you look, if your mascara is still on? To brush up your hair? Just out of curiosity?
I weigh myself once a day in the morning, but my weightloss has been so weird that sometimes I am just curious to see what it does throughout the day, and when I go to bed and weigh myself I can guesstimate what my weight will be at in the morning and it sort of prepares me for it. But in the end, I don't WORRY over what the scale says. I just go see. Curiosity. No anxious feelings, no anger or stress over it. Just "okay, this is what it is." With the occasional "Hmm, I don't understand what my body is doing, but whatever... we'll see in a few days." If you weigh and everytime you get upset over it or worry because of it, then it is a problem. But the weighing is not the problem, it's you understanding how weightloss works and what DOES help losing weight and what DOESNT. If you read around here you've read about all the causes for constant fluctuations and the advice to not worry over stuff if you know you are keeping on track. You do what you do, the result will follow eventually. If that lesson is not ingraved in your brain yet, then taking the scale away is not gonna fix the anxiety. It might make it worse, as you describe yourself. Have confidence in the proven method of "eat less, move more." Hundreds of people have come before you or are doing it at the same time as you are. It works. It just is a bumpy ride. The only time to worry over the scale is when you've done what you know you should for weeeeeeeks at a time and nothing changes, no measurements and not the scale. That would be a time to change it up some and test ride the new approach for a fw weeks. If by then it's still not working you might wanna visit your doc. All the other stuff is just you thinking you can drop the weight faster than you gained it, and that's just not realistic. Goodluck to you! Keep weighing, keep sane. ;) |
I keep my scales in the kitchen in one of the bottom cabinets. I have to bend over and dig it out in order to weigh myself, and it feels pretty pointless to do anyway since it gives me a different number every time I step on it (it literally can give me a difference of 8 pounds within seconds).
The only weight record I take seriously is when I go to my TOPS meeting once a week. I used to be obsessive and would weigh myself multiple times a day, but realized that, at least in my case, it was a very unhealthy thing to do. |

Exactly the same here! The problem wasn't the weighing itself, but rather the fact that if I didn't see any results, or worse, if I'd see a slight gain, which is perfectly normal especially during certain times of the month, I'd get really depressed.
The scale should be a tool to help you control your weight, not some device to set your mood for the day. |
I tend to weigh once in the morning and once in the evening. I don't think there's anything wrong with weighing often as long as you don't let the slight weight shifts upset you. I mean the way of I think of it is - ok I weigh a couple pounds more in the evening but the food I ate wasn't air. It has some weight to it.
if you are getting upset over it, or obsessing to the point that you're constantly thinking about how your weight has shifted in the last couple of hours it probably is a good idea to remove the scale. have someone hide it or find some other option of weighing that would limit how often you can weigh. You could always tell your BF to let you weigh once a day. I do. I just understand that water weight/food i haven't "gotten rid of" yet can make me weigh more one day than another and its not going to be actual fat that i've gained. if you can accept that i see nothing wrong with weighing daily. it helps keep me on track. if i wait too long to weigh its easy for me to get demotivated and let a few pounds sneak back on |
Good for you. For many years I had to avoid them because of the obsession and just used the fit of my clothes to gauge weight loss/gain.
