Ideas for salty cravings...

Hi everyone. For my sweet tooth cravings I have been able to manage with a piece of fruit. Lately I've been wondering what a healthy alternative for the salty craving might be? Two months on this diet and the will power and munchie control has been quite easy thankfully. 25lbs gone in two months on my little boot camp with cardio and lots of whole foods. Thanks for your input.

I just made a post very similar to this -- a lot of the foods I eat don't seem bad at all, yet they are almost always high in sodium. I guess that makes me a salt-fiend as well. I'd suggest you get popcorn (I'm gonna start doing this) and get some popcorn seasoning. I'm thinking about doing this myself tonight, actually, lol. :)

Congrats on your weight loss! ACT II BRAND 94% Fat-Free popcorn is only 30 calories, 1.5 grms of fat, and 4.5 carbohydrates per one cup serving. Sometimes I snack on pickles and olives too for a salty fix!

beachlover86 03-25-2012 07:28 PM

I second the popcorn. You can get the mini bags and it's a TON of popcorn for 100 calories. I always keep them on hand.

nubber 03-25-2012 07:32 PM

Thanks girls. Popcorn sounds like a plan. I can find my way to the bottom of a 50 gallon drum if the movies good though, LOL. I'll hunt for lo-cal stuff around here.

Seaweed snacks! Satisfy my chip craving and are like 60 cals for the whole package. The store by my house has wasabi ones too. Yummm.

I'll be looking into those for sure. Potatoe chips are the devil. LOL

Salt is my thing too..

I like pickles, home-made (air popped) popcorn w/ a spray of butter Pam & sea salt. I don't like eating the popcorn from the microwaveable bags because of all the stuff coming out about the chemicals ! Still bad for you in a different way. You can buy kernels in the same isle, get some paper lunch bags (paper plate isle?), and buttered Pam. just measure out a serving which for me is 3 Tbsp which yeilds and entire normal sized zip lock baggy full (stuffed). fold the top of the bag over and microwave for ~2:00 minutes.

I also like to get frozen stir fry sometimes, the kind with only veggies, and heat up a cup or so in a skillet. Usually they have a teriyaki sauce in it. Really salty and pretty quick to make.

Hm. I like Quakers white Chester rice cakes. Taste like popcorn, 45 cals each.

I haven't tried yet but I mean to soon;
kale chips (kale sprinkled with salt/Pam and cooked in a toaster oven until crispy)
butternut squash fries

threenorns 03-25-2012 09:18 PM

i second the kale chips - i'll be making up a batch tomorrow although i'll be using olive oil, not Pam (i don't like the chemical taste of that stuff).

Third the seaweed snacks! They taste soo salty, I swear the sodium count has to be wrong. Mmm.

luckymommy 03-25-2012 10:02 PM

I love all the ideas. I also wanted to suggest something else, which isn't for everyone of course: raw sauerkraut. It can be found at a health food store. It has lots of healthy probiotics so it's actually good for you. I think you can also make your own if you're more adventurous if you purchase a starter, but please don't quote me on it.

kirsteng 03-25-2012 10:31 PM

I like the asian stuff too.

Those little seaweed snacky strips with spicey seasoning...

And I like Korean kimchi (spicey pickled cabbage - sounds bad but it's actually fantastic!).

WildThings 03-25-2012 11:08 PM

I toast my own almonds and usually add a little salt and other spices. They are definitely my go-to salty snack. They give me a boost of protein and fat along with fulfilling my salt cravings.

Bobbles 03-25-2012 11:34 PM

Seaweed snacks are the absolute devil LOL. Thank goodness they aren't that bad for you, I could seriously polish off an entire package given the opportunity!!

pixelllate 03-25-2012 11:38 PM

I just add soy sauce and fish sauce to my dishes, even if it bloats me I know its not "fat weight"
really hits the spot!

bronzeager 03-26-2012 01:42 AM

Cheese. I know all the calorie counters are going NoooOOOO! But a really good, tasty cheese can be cut very thin and eaten along with an apple or rye cracker, and still be enormously satisfying. I'm not talking here about Kraft pre-shredded vacuum-packed low-fat stuff, but a nice feta or real Italian parmesan or Dutch Gouda. It will be a little pricier than the factory cheese, but totally worth it. You can get very good ones at Costco and Sam's Club now even.

This may not work for cheese bingers, although I used to be one, and can now limit myself happily to one ounce or even a half ounce per day. And people whose spouses will grab anything handy in the fridge to consume in front of TV, will need to hide it or this can become an expensive habit quickly.

I also do the soy sauce or teriyaki sauce thing. Great for roasted broccoli.

peachypeg 03-26-2012 08:26 AM

Alyj.......are you using the air popcorn in the microwave? Sounds like a good way to keep cals and salt down and cost effective as well.

Where are seaweed chips? Regular grocery store in the health isle? I don't have a speciality store anywhere close.

beachlover86 03-26-2012 01:31 PM

I would also like to know more about the seaweed snacks everyone is talking about?

Munchy 03-26-2012 01:50 PM

I buy these from Trader Joe's.

LovelyAndLosing 03-26-2012 01:54 PM

Ahh the wasabi ones I get from my corner store are tastier than the TJ ones though ... I think they are some brand like "Annie Chungs" or something.

canadianwoman 03-26-2012 02:45 PM

I have a cup of broth or bouillon. It satisfies my salt cravings for very little calories and carbs. 30 calories and 2 carbs for a coffee mug full of broth.

peachypeg 03-26-2012 09:09 PM

no Trader Joes in like an hour's drive from me :( I have the basic Kroger, Ingals, and Publix.....thats it LOL

And I am not a fan of wasabi.....do they have regular at your corner store, Lovely?

sontaikle 03-26-2012 09:10 PM

Smart Fries are one of my favorite low-calorie salty snacks.

Pretzels ( both the small crunchy kind and the big kind you have with mustard), some kind of wheat thin or low calorie cracker like special K with the laughing cow spreadable cheese is good too!

pluckypear 03-26-2012 10:37 PM

Pop Chips
Dill Pickles - Love the sour and half sour ones
Raw saurkraut-saw this posted above, I love it too

Alyj89 03-27-2012 05:00 AM

@peachypef yep! I started doing it a long time ago before even watching calories when all the stuff came out in the news about how the bags were leeching chemicals into the popcorn when heated up. So I stoppe making popcorn that way. I just put 3 Tbsp (130 cals from the kernels at Walmart) in a paper lunch sack (the small ones - paper plate isle) and fold the top over a few times. microwave 2:00 minutes. I carefully spoon out the popped ones, then reheat the left over kernala if there's too many to just eat. spray with butter pam and salt w/ seasalt. or garlic powder + seasalt. or the popcorn seasonings. somethin I even like the packets from beef flavored rame noodles - half of it - that's REALLY salty though !

The 3 tbsp of kernels makes a significant amount of popped popcorn - I would estimate 4-4 1-2 cups ? totally ball parking that, could be less or more.

beachlover86 03-27-2012 08:20 AM

thanks munchy! I am SUPER excited to give these a try! :)

canadianwoman 03-27-2012 07:42 PM

Olives make a nice little salty snack.

They do, and the regular are good too. But I LOVE wasabi. Haha.

lilmisschattabox 03-27-2012 10:37 PM

I just dry fried some sunflower seeds and added a couple of squirts of soy sauce once they were golden - munchy and salty! Yum!
