Cough drops have calories!

just ranting...why do cough drops have to have calories? like I'm not miserable enough as it is with this cold...

jayohwhy 03-24-2012 01:55 AM

The sugar free ones only have 5 cals a pop

sparklegirl07 03-24-2012 02:04 AM

oh, good point! I didn't think about that - I was just using whatever I had lying around the apartment

QuarterLife88 03-24-2012 08:15 AM

I highly doubt a few cough drops will make or break you...

This seems like extreme worry, don't you think? It's like the people that worry about chewing gum because it has a few calories. The act of swallowing and the body absorbing it probably takes more energy than whatever's in those drops.

If I'm sick enough to need cough drops, I do not worry about counting any calories for them. I do still track and eat as normal, but the cough drops don't get factored in.

Same as mentioned above, I don't count gum. I chew several pieces a day, but it's really insignificant in the grand scheme of things.

I have a sinus infection with the worst sore throat ever, I was thinking the same thing yesterday! I also checked the bag to see what the max amount I can have in a day, seems like they used to print that but they dont anymore.

I don't count the calories in the drops, gum or my chew vitamins. I figure those are just not enough to matter.

I just hate all the sugar in them-if I;m in a pinch and I don't have the sugar free ones, cause I like to have one at least right before bed after I brush my teeth if I have a sore throat.

Coughing that much is a heck of an abworkout. ;)

sparklegirl07 03-24-2012 03:52 PM

thanks for responding! i definitely didn't mean to sound extreme - just bemoaning the fact that even the cough drops are "turning against me" in my time of need (at 18 cals a piece, they add up if I'm trying to suppress cough 24/7)

but on the "positive" side, coughing does give me a crazy ab workout!...yay...

berryblondeboys 03-24-2012 04:11 PM

And since they are pure sugar they can spike your sugar level, then you experience a big drop and then the next thing you know you are eating because you think you are hungry when really it's the blood sugar thing working against you.

no kidding... I have burt's bee cough drops here. they are honey flavored and they actually taste really good. they are almost like candy!

Snoofie 03-24-2012 06:44 PM

...It's a cough drop. If you're sick and you need it, why does it matter? I mean, would you try and find out the calories in cough syrup if you had to take it?

There's such a thing as going too far with the whole calorie counting thing, you know. ;)

TamTam 03-24-2012 07:29 PM

Yep, I just put somebody's kid at Hall's Cough Drops through a semenster of College!!! Not to mention, the Robitussin kids too AND the Nyquil ones too!

jajomo0118 03-27-2012 10:00 PM

I have to confess...that I was really sick in January and I calorie counted my cough drops...I used what I needed...but it made me mad at the same time that through out the day...I could have had an apple or pear for as many calories as they were!! So I understand.

MiZTaCCen 03-28-2012 09:55 AM

This thread is funny, I never thought for a second to check calories on cough drops, I don't even do it for gum (though I hardly eat gum). But now out of curiousity I'll probably walk to the store beside me and checkout calories on each package of cough drops for the **** of it. lol
