I remember years ago when Dr. Perricone was on Oprah. He claimed that if you drank anywhere between 4-6 cups of green tea daily and didn't change your diet, you'd lose 10 pounds in a month. I remember the audience, as well as Oprah, gasping in delight, making a mental note to buy stock in green tea once they got home. Does anyone else remember seeing this episode? I remember yelling at the tv, "BULL!" I am a big green tea drinker and drink at least 4 cups a day if not more. I, too, love it and the little pick me up it gives me, but have not experienced any weightloss from drinking it.

I think if you're drinking that much then you're going to be filling up on the tea and not be as hungry. I don't know about 10lbs a month, but I assume that you would probably lose something just from eating less.

But I'm curious now about the flavored green teas you all are talking about. Do you feel they provide just as much of the nutritional benefits as the regular green teas do? I'm always nervous to try them and I think it's for this reason. Like if they add something to it, it takes away some of the health benefits. Am I being paranoid? :D

I think you are being paranoid. :)

The Stash Green Chai gets its flavoring from spices: cinnamon, clove, nutmeg, etc. That only adds, it doesn't take away.

I drink a lot of green tea, though I imagine the weight-loss/metabolism benefit is very tiny - I figure, even if it's 50 calories per day, why not drink it since I like it?

I also want to point out the other various health benefits, not the least of which is the polyphenol/antioxidant benefit. I've read, in multiple places, about it potentially providing immune system boosts and aid against cancer, high cholesterol and heart disease.

Will drinking it cure your cancer or make you skinny? No. Does every little bit help? Yes! :)

I've been drinking green tea, hot and cold for almost 20 years and it replaced my pop intake completely a year ago. I can't say whether it increases metabolism but can say it's better than soda pop. I only use a little honey to sweeten. I have more energy lately, but that can be from the weight coming off.

I do have a question though...I usually find green tea to be a tad on the bitter side. I add a very tiny amount of Stevia to it. As far as green tea goes, added fruit flavors actually increase the powerfulness of the antioxidant associated with all the health benefits(catechins) due to the vitamin C.

As long as it's natural flavor(like jasmine flowers for jasmine green tea) instead of artificial flavoring(I accidentally bought artificially flavored jasmine green tea once.. tasted like perfume. Bleh! ) it should be fine. A lot of the flowers, spices, fruits, etc. used for the flavors even have benefits of their own.

By the way, if any of you find green tea to be bitter, make sure you're steeping it correctly! Green tea should not be steeped with boiling water like black tea.

Now you have me interested in trying the jasmine green tea. Could you recommend a brand you prefer?

Also, I heat up the water in my tea cup (about 10 oz) in the microwave for 3 minutes, then add my tea bag and let it steep for another 3 mintues. Is either or both of these incorrect?

microwaved water makes crappy tea - you need the oxygenation, which microwaving literally shakes out. there is also the risk of severe scalding from superheating - this happens when you have very clean water in a very smooth container such as a glazed cup and unwittingly heat it up past the boiling point. the water will look perfectly smooth and calm until you disturb the surface by removing it carelessly or by tossing in something like a teabag at which point half the water will erupt in an explosion of steam and superheated water spraying everywhere.

to prevent that, add a pinch of sugar or salt or a non-metallic spoon or use a cup with a rough surface - that's to get the convection currents going so it will come to a proper rolling boil.

safest of all is just to use the kettle or, what i do, is use my dolce-gusto coffeemaker to put water in a cup with a teabag.

i drink GALLONS of tea - 8-10 cups a day, roughly, and it's all kinds: herbal tea, black tea (President's Choice Chocolatey-Mint...mmmm...) and flavoured green tea.

dunno from where the calorie count is coming: all my packages read zero per serving.

My favorite brand for jasmine green is Numi, but as long as it's real jasmine, I have yet to try a jasmine green that wasn't delicious.

Hmm, I don't have any experience in microwaving water for tea, but if it's boiling in the cup by the end of the three minutes I think waiting a minute or two for it to cool before adding the tea would be beneficial. Steep time depends on the tea... I've found that Japanese green teas are best with shorter steep times(1-2 minutes) while Chinese teas are better steeped a bit longer(2-3), and I usually steep all flavored greens for 3 minutes, but of course taste preferences differ so I really recommend experimenting with it. Too hot water + too long of a steep time definitely results in green tea tasting bitter, though, and it really shouldn't be, so experimenting with temperature and steeping time should certainly help. :)

Really? I had no idea. How is it supposed to be made?

A few cups may increase your calorie burn by 50 cal. -- It may sound insignificant, but in year that could mean 5 pound loss :)

I drink green tea, because I like it and if I shed extra 5 pounds as a bonus effect in a year: I am a happy camper

konfyoozed 03-19-2012 03:25 PM

when i drink hot green tea i put the tea bag in a mug, and set my keurig to brew without a k-cup. it just puts 185 degree water in the mug and i let it steep that way until it's cool enough to drink. with the fruit flavor it doesn't need much in the way of sweetener, but if i'm craving a sweet treat i'll add a little splenda to it.. 0 calorie treat! :)

Wow! I've never experienced any of what you mentioned. When I put my teabag in the hot water, nothing erupts in an explosion of steam. Maybe I'll try heating it to just 2 1/2 minutes to be on the safe side though.

threenorns 03-19-2012 03:52 PM

it's happened to me a time or two - i used to use lab beakers as coffee cups. they're extremely smooth tempered glass and mine were tapered slightly in at the top so the effect was really spectacular. i used to take it out of the micro with the tongs (they look like the jar-lifters you use when canning) and put it on the table, stand WAY back, and toss the teabag in using the tongs.

coulda/shoulda just added sugar or salt to impurify the water but that's just not much fun, now is it?
