What to do when you're hungry before bed...

So it's around midnight, I was done eating at about 8:00, worked out around 10ish for 40 minutes, and now I'm hungry again. I'm no where near my calorie limit (MyFitnessPal gives me 1920, I'm at like 1500 something), but I can't help that feeling of "God, I'm such a fat***" for eating once I've closed my food journal for the day. How do y'all battle that feeling? Do you just drink another glass of water and call it a day, or what?

kprincess45 03-10-2012 12:17 AM

I drink some water or chew on some ice. yum! maybe chew some gum?

JohnP 03-10-2012 12:23 AM

I just go to bed

astrophe 03-10-2012 12:33 AM

If you can manage to sleep, sleep.

If the tummy growls are keeping you awake and you have room in your calorie budget -- stop fighting low blood sugar. Get a hardboiled egg and a cheese stick or something with protein like that, some tea or water. Eat it, then go to sleep.

And note what you have learned. "If I exercise at 10 PM I get hungry later."

Change the workout time to BEFORE dinner. See how that works out. Or just plan for the postworkout snack in your calorie budget if that's the best time you have for workout.

But don't talk to yourself like that! Calling yourself names is helpful how? Instead give yourself the high 5 for workout and staying in calorie budget. It's your budget. You ARE allowed to spend it.

I do try to work out before dinner time, but today that wasn't really possible and I couldn't really work out until my dad went to bed because what I wanted to do required the TV. Tomorrow will be a different day, hopefully.

Would a yogurt be a good idea? That's what I usually go for during these times cause they're not so calorie dense (I go for Dannon Light 'n Fit cause they're only 80 calories) and they have a bit of protein.

mimsyborogoves 03-10-2012 12:47 AM

You know what? Lol, I've decided I'm just going to bed because in the time that I've spent sitting here pondering "Should I get something to eat?" 45 minutes have gone by, so that obviously means that I don't really need something to eat right now. Go me for telling the voice to shut up! :)

luckymommy 03-10-2012 12:51 AM

Good for you! That is awesome! In the future, one yogurt won't kill you, but I would go for a greek yogurt if possible (I think it's 100 calories but it has more protein and just seems more filling and nutritious).

DrivenByAmbition 03-10-2012 12:52 AM

Drink a glass of water.

astrophe 03-10-2012 01:01 AM

Well, what you get depends on you. You may have to experiment to see what satisfies you.

I'm good with yogurt... might add some breakfast sausage or blueberries to it because that's how I like it. I also like PB on apple slices.

Glad it seemed to have calmed, but again... it's your budget to spend. It's ok to spend it up if you need to!

mimsyborogoves 03-10-2012 01:21 AM

You put breakfast sausage IN your yogurt? That... well, that doesn't sound appetizing at all, haha! Is it good or am I being silly?

Precious Little 03-10-2012 01:22 AM

I tend to get a little shaky if I'm really REALLY hungry before bed, so I have either a small glass of juice (grape juice) so I don't get the shakes as I drift off to sleep (if I've cleaned my teeth already), and if I haven't yet cleaned my teeth, I'll have a bit of low fat natural yogurt - and depending on my sugar craving, I may sweeten with a teaspoon of honey and cinnamon. I'll only serve it in a small ramekin dish though, and no seconds.

MsBrightside 03-10-2012 01:36 AM

Usually a glass of water and half an apple or some low fat low calorie yogurt.

free1 03-10-2012 09:11 AM

Tea works great hot or cold....

KDeian 03-10-2012 09:17 AM

I usually go to bed if it's after 10 and my tummy starts grumbling. Otherwise I know I'll make terrible food choices and eat too much.

MamaBravo 03-10-2012 09:52 AM

Bedtimes have always been hard for me. I have always been a night person. The closer it gets to bedtime if my stomach starts rumbling I go for a bottle of water, it normally stops the hunger pains long enough for me to fall asleep. I use crystal light packets so they have some flavor, so if I am also having a sweet tooth, it will help ease that as well.

kirsteng 03-10-2012 11:13 AM

I like to feel hungry before bed - it makes me realize that I'll be burning fat the whole night while I sleep! ;)

But if it's really rumbling and I'm seriously hungry, I get a little bit of something to calm it down - 1/2 hard boiled egg or a couple of triscuits. Otherwise I have trouble falling asleep.

Horo 03-10-2012 11:14 AM

Lately, what works for me is hot chamomile tea. It has the added benefit of better putting me to sleep so there's less chance I'll get up and eat something anyway.

Riemontana 03-10-2012 11:21 AM

I need a late snack as a blood sugar control so I just plan a snack every night. It has just become part of my routine. I like the dannon yogurt. 80 cals is a good snack

pixelllate 03-10-2012 12:13 PM

I stick some veggies in a pot-like cabbage and boil. I drink the broth and eat the veggies, its soo filling for hours.
Sometimes I can't even finish the soup.

Jacks Big Mama 03-10-2012 12:23 PM

I don't like it when I get so hungry late! If it's bothering me enough that I can't fall asleep, I usually grab string cheese. That seems to take away the hunger, and it's not too heavy to eat before going to bed.

d130 03-10-2012 12:34 PM

I tend to just drink some ice water. If I'm hungry enough for it to keep my awake though, I'll have some fruit or a hard-boiled egg or a small bowl of cereal, just something to take the edge off really.

Teacher2B 03-10-2012 02:01 PM

In my case, it usually depends on how hungry I am. If it's not much, I will just drink a glass of water (right before getting in bed), or maybe a small glass of skimmed milk. If I am hungrier, an apple (good to help you sleep, btw) or a small glass of yogurth if there is some at home.

Like luckymommy said, Greek yogurt is a better option. The low fat one is creamier and less acid than normal yogurth, so you don't have to add sweeteners to make it bearable.

astrophe 03-10-2012 05:51 PM

LOL -- no, on the side. I have yogurt with breakfast sausage on the side. Not into it.

KittyKatFan 03-10-2012 08:51 PM

This is a problem for me too. I end up eating later than I should, which I know is bad for me.

If I am hungry before bed, I can't stand it so I will eat something small, even if it is a nut or two, or a berry or two.

This cracked me up, I thought she put them in her yogurt as well...:dizzy:

Mrshonopolist 03-15-2012 01:09 PM

I normally just drink water and go to bed, works for me.

AlyN 03-15-2012 01:35 PM

I love the MyFittnessPal app! Mine is set for 1200 calories. Sometimes, even that is hard to meet with my busy schedule! But try to meet your calorie goals. I don't think being very hungry is really a good sign, make sure if you have to work out late, you eat a foods that are incredibly nutritious for dinner! Eat good carbs and good fats! But you can always drink some water with a pinch of lemon! Maybe even some warm green tea? That always works when I need a little pickerup.

Thistleberry 03-15-2012 01:57 PM

I'm another tall glass of ice water drinker. Sometimes I'll eat some berries. I haven't yet been so hungry that I can't fall asleep.
But if you're well within your calorie limits it shouldn't be a huge deal to just eat something that fits. You shouldn't have to feel guilty about that.

Oh thank god for Crystal Light! I'd never be able to drink all the water I should without it! I like to mix one big packet of tea flavored with one big packet of lemonade flavored in a gallon pitcher. It takes me roughly 2 days to drink it which works out to eight 8oz glasses a day. Perfect! :)

This cracks *me* up because it actually sounds good to me! :D

I usually have a Kroger brand LOW-CARB yogurt before bed because I have a sweet tooth! about 60 calories each, 1.5 fat and 3-4 carbs, 3grms of sugar. The Bananna Cream Pie and white chocolate raspberry flavors are NEW and are TO DIE FOR!

astrophe 03-16-2012 10:51 PM

Man, now I'm gonna have to try it. Sausages IN the yogurt.

:D

I always get a little hungry before bed, so I have a piece of string cheese, a teaspoon of peanut butter, or a glass of milk. Those always do the trick.
