body image= self esteem

  • I don't know where in the forum this should be so if it's in the wrong place please move it.

Now my question is does anyone else think that their body image directly correlates with their self esteem level. I know that it shouldn't but unfortunately I was brought up that way, you know skinny=good and fat=bad. I won't to desperatley change this so any suggestions of how to would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
  • i kind of do think that...as much as it is wrong thinking.

there are plenty of women that are not a size 2 that feel good about themselves and are happy and confident and are brimming with self esteem.
as it should be....since there are hundreds of things to feel good about, accomplishments, intellect, sense of humor....love of life....could go on and on and on...

for me i think that its hard to feel good about myself....inside myself....its like i'm only good reflected from other people....and the most immediate way to get that kind of approval from people is looks. i think the only way we can change this is through hard work and really loving and appreciating the good things about ourselves that have nothing to do with outer appearance.

i don't know if this made much sense
  • I think there sure is a connection between being overweight and having low self-esteem. Several days ago, I started a thread called "What Do You Like Best About Yourself" and although many people have viewed it, only 3 people have come up with a reply. I think that is sad! What you weigh is NOT who you are...

  • I feel like what I weigh unfortunately. If I am heavy, I feel disgusting and horrible about myself. If I am losing weight - I feel sassy and so much better… happy even. But I also feel that I will never be completely happy about my body.
It is sad but is also an honest reply.
  • THanks for the replies! I never realized it but what you said ebe is SO TRUE about approval from looks. I will need to work really hard at stopping this way of thinking. I'm starting to journal so maybe that will help. I'll let you know.
  • thanks for this topic. i know i unfortunately have a long way to go in this area. it's good to know i'm not alone and also that i can get from here to there if i keep on working on this issue. take care.
