Default is my fat getting softer?

My calves used to be hard as rocks - you couldn't pinch fat or anything because it was one solid block of fat around my lower leg. Over the past couple of weeks my calves have become flabbier and it's now possible to actually grab a chunk of fat and separate it from the rest of the fat. My stomach is also becoming flabby where it used to be a lot of really firm fat.

I'm not super concerned and I'm just going to go with it, but this is still pretty weird. Has anyone experienced this before?

It's not so much that the fat is softer, but that a lot of it is disappearing and leaving behind looser skin. Now don't panic, skin will shrink back - maybe completely, maybe partially, but it shrinks up slower than the fat disappears. There is still fat under the layers of skin too, so it will still feel fatter, but basically, the skin isn't being held as taut as before because of your weight loss successes and that's why you can pinch/grab it.

Exactly what BBB said - your fat has more room now behind your skin because you're shrinking. Hurray! It's a sign of progress!

It's my understanding that firm fat in the belly region is visceral (bad) fat and squishy fat is the subcutaneous (less bad) fat. Excessive fat is still considered unhealthy, but the squishy fat is the lesser of two evils.

I can't recall where I read that visceral fat is firmer, so I'm not 100% sure of the accuracy

Im sure that it's mostly due to having loose skin, but there was a recent study that shows that there are different types of fat. An athlete for example has fat that's more the consistency of olive oil, whereas someone who sits more than six hours a day has more solidified fat. So maybe you're just getting more fit

There is a lot of information on this thread that is inaccurate.

Fat is not hard or soft based on your athletic ability.

Visceral fat is around your internal organs. It is not around your calves.

Subcutaneous fat is what the op (and everyone else) has in her calves. The more fat you have packed into one place the harder that place will feel. As you lose fat in the areas and the fat cells empty out the area will soften.

My kids used to call me iron belly because like a lot of men I carry my fat in my belly and even after losing 60 lbs it was still rock hard. Slowly but surely it has softened up and now it is quite squishy.

You're definitely not the only one! My lower belly and upper arms are insanely squishy. I'm glad to hear that's a good sign... so the question remains will this ever tighten up???????????

I have been thinking the same thing about my belly fat. It seems more squishy and jiggly. That makes sense that there is less of it and looser skin.

visceral fat is the fat packed around the organs, and men are most likely to present with a hard round belly because of it. Visceral fat is also the worst fat to have health wise.

like JohnP said subQ fat is what everyone has everywhere else, and yes, the fat goes out, water rushes in to take its place, and your body adapts your skin around this, but when the water comes out of the cells (a whoosh) you are left with saggy skin. If the process is too fast, your body has more trouble adapting. The best thing to do is build muscle up under neath this loose skin. It i will help the skin be able to adapt to the new size better.
