I'm having the same problem as OP. I feel so hungry after those days I work out. When I only do ripped in 30 by Jillian, then I'm okay. But on the days I do the video + run c25k I have wolf hunger.

Should I add some protein powder?

Your approach is almost exactly what I do (minus the kids and the protein shake --LOL!). I have been trying to do one hour of some kind of activity each day, but not "formal" gym-type exercise. I'll ride my bike to the store and back (30 minutes), do deep cleaning on a room in my house (30 min. - 1 hour), take my dog for another walk (20 minutes), etc. If I tried to do a gym-style workout on top of that, I would be even hungrier than I am!

As for the OP, when I feel hungry I try to ride it out. In the past, it was almost as if I was afraid of hunger, as if I would just die if I didn't eat something immediately. However, I've learned that when I get hungry, if I can ride out that feeling for 30 minutes or so, it usualy passes (especially if I get involved with something else). If it persists and is really bad, I'll eat a little something that I know will satisfy me until dinner (e.g., a small piece of bread w/ cheese---combining carbs, fat, & protein seems to help me tremendously with hunger).

Yes, and this is actually the reason I don't exercise. I realized that 90% of the time I worked out (and we're talking low intensity elliptical work, 20-30 minutes), I would binge later. I tried timing my meals and all that, adding lots of protein, but still- even if it was hours later, I'd start to feel empty and starving.

I do understand the importance of exercise, and I'm not giving up on it forever... but right now, in the middle of me trying to change my lifestyle and eating/binging habits, it's just a trigger for me. I am taking a break from it until I am stronger in my plan and better at resisting binge cravings.

I've decided to do the same. Exercising just requires me to eat way too much, and I find it hard to control myself. Once I get down to my goal weight, I plan to start lifting weights (free gym at my school!), so I can be ripped, and not just skinny. ;)

And this is the ONLY time of day I don't "feel like" eating. It's like there's so much going on in my body, eating just seems like a chore. I think there's a mental component to this too because the exercise really focuses me on exactly what it is I'm trying to accomplish and how good it makes me feel to be doing it. Honestly, if I go "off plan" with what I eat, it's almost ALWAYS on a rest day.

But maybe I'm just weird like that ;).

High five to the lucky minority! :high: I always find that exercise suppresses my appetite and gives me a tremendous amount of energy. In fact it makes it a lot easier to eat so few calories and stay on plan. It also helps curb my cravings. I really only find myself craving or feeling hungry on rest days as well. I guess everyone's body is different though.

More protein and more fat!! Fewer carbs!!

I'm on around 1200-1300 and even on days I run 9 kilometers (about an hour) I don't get too hungry... though I do add another 100-200 cals to my usual total. I get no more than 150 g of carbs a day usually, and try to get to 80-90 g of protein.

Also, my "go to" meal that leaves me feeling STUFFED is: 3/4 c of oatmeal, 1 scoop protein powder, 1 tbs peanut butter. It is delicious and keeps me from wanting to eat for hours. It's something like 400 calories, 30-35 g of protein, 15 g of fat I think :)

Initially, a good workout will make me not want to eat afterwards, but if I don't add a little something to those days, I get crazy hungry. I worked out for a month without adding extra calories, and it was torture.

Now I drink a fat-free, high protein shake (190 cals) after super-awesome workouts. Like I won't "get" the shake unless I burn at least 200-300 cals, preferrably more. Adding this is hasn't stalled my weight loss, and does help me work out more and sustain my energy.

I say keep working out!!! You don't want to lose a bunch a weight and then be skinny-fat, where you have no muscle tone and still have an unhealthy body fat %.

yeah, working out hard put me in an eating frenzy but when i took it down a notch and currently workout only three times a week i crave less and only remember to eat when i'm really hungry unlike before when i exercised like a maniac I thought about food all day. Plus i'm losing more weight! I wish you all the best!

fitwayoflife 08-02-2011 01:28 PM

Yes, yes, yes! I used to exercise for an hour or more a day, but it would make me hungry and binge and think about food all day. I exercise 30 mintues a day now, and I feel great and don't binge. One or 2 days a week, I might exercise 50 minutes, but 30 minutes is what I aim for.

Right after I work out I have absolutely no appetitie. So if I plan my day appropriately, I can use my workouts to avoid going over on calories.

That diet PB looks just nasty. Look what they have done to it. All the processing and additives. Ugh :( Why? PB is perfectly healthy and quite easy to fit into a reduced calorie diet. My philosophy is to just eat the real deal and work my numbers to accomodate it.

I agree completely. I love all natural p.b.---no sugar, no salt. One of my favorite breakfasts is eating p.b. on whole wheat toast with a tsp. of fig jam (bought from Whole Foods). Yum! And it's filling and satisfying.

Since we're all sharing ... :D

Light exercise has no effect

Moderate tends to make me hungry but not that much

Heavy exercise makes me hungry but not ravenous

Heavy + intense exercise totally blunts my hunger for a couple hours. Can't eat. Don't want to see food. Eventually I become ravenous.

Generally speaking I'm hungry all the time though. :D

christine123 08-02-2011 05:08 PM

Exercise kills my appetite for a couple of hours. Then I become starved. I exercise only in the evenings for this reason. By the time I'm starved, I am too tired to worry about it and go directly to bed.

nina125 08-02-2011 05:17 PM

I get ravenous no matter how hard or little I work out. So I eat a light dinner when I get home from work, work out, and then shower and sleep right away. This way I sleep though my hunger.

QuilterInVA 08-02-2011 05:38 PM

Better than Peanut Butter is nasty stuff - loads of sugar.

abbysue715 08-02-2011 06:00 PM

I should try to workout right before bed and see if that helps.
