Can't exercise for a while (need pep talks, encouragement)

  • I injured my knees and can't exercise for an unknown amount of time, maybe months. I know it's possible to lose weight without exercise, but for me, exercise helps so much. Please give me advice, your personal experiences, etc., about being able to lose weight without exercise.
  • you poor thing, taking out your knees is the worst I had an op on mind a few years go and it was a nightmare. I hope you recover quickly.
keep at the diet and could you do some kind of exercise where you sit / lay down? its wont be cardio but you could work on you upper body toning.
Also you could talk to a physio as even though you will have to take it easy for the next few months you cant let your mussels in your upper legs go to waste, mind did and it was hard to build them back up, a good physio can give you light movements to do while you recover.

good luck honey and I hope you have a speedy recovery
  • Oh, I'm sorry. I blew out pretty much every tendon/ligament/whatever in my ankle in Nov 09, so I feel your pain. Literally. My ankle just twinged in sympathy.

Honestly, moving around was so difficult for me that I basically went from bed to work to couch to bed for a few months. I just accepted the weight gain and worked to correct it once I was cleared for exercise. Once I was a little more oriented to my condition, and not just working/sleeping/trying to wash my hair, I tried to track my points.

I didn't do a great job of it, to be honest. My husband was working 24/7, and so was I, and he had to take care of EVERYTHING, an we weren't always mindful of what we ate. But we tried. If I had been more careful, I'd have gained less than I did. Given that I did SOMETHING, though, my gain wasn't insurmountable.

Eat foods that give you energy -- veggies, whole grains, fresh proteins.

Do any physical therapy exercises you can. I don't know if knees and ankles are the same, but doing mine every day saved my mobility and helped me heal faster.

The good news is that I healed as much as anyone can heal from that kind of thing, got 100 percent of my mobility back, and just have to wear a stretchy brace when I work out (more for pain management than anything else).

Best wishes for a speedy recovery!
  • I would absolutely do upper body work, just to keep an exercise routine part of your daily life. And tell your doctor/PT just how important exercise is to you: really make a huge big deal about it. This will push them to help you come up with creative ideas. If your PT isn't willing to help you, I'd get a second opinion.
  • Thanks!
  • I remember Jillian Michaels saying if you ever have a lower body injury punching is a great way to do cardio without getting your lower body involved. Not sure how effective it is but it's definitely worth a shot.
