From that same calculator, if you are moderately active (moderate exercise 3-5 days per week) you should be consuming 2178 calories per day.

As I understand it, that would be to just MAINTAIN her current weight. That site is slightly confusing. Mine says 2261 for moderate and I'm older and taller. It's a nice calculator, but kind of confusing if you don't read where it says "Based on how much activity you do on an average day, the calories in the right column will be the number of calories that you will be able to eat at your goal weight. If you start eating those calories right now (eating like the thinner you), you will eventually become that thinner person." and that just doesn't make sense to me as it is contradictory to everything I've ever read. I mean we've all heard time and again maintenance calories are higher than losing calories. IDK, I could just be very confused.

I think that the crux of that is the different ways in which you can use to lose. WW, for example, does have you eating more calories in maintenance than in losing. From what I understand, plans are formulated like that to allow for quicker weight loss. They try to find that fine line where you're losing the most weight you can safely lose per week but you're still feeding your body enough to keep your metabolism up.

That site is saying that if you are overweight and you change your diet and lifestyle to be the one of someone at your goal, your body will lose weight and "catch up" (or "down" if you'd rather) to the level of calories that you're eating. When you enter a goal weight on that calculator, it shows you the maintenance level for your goal weight. Eating like this will make for a slower weight loss (say 0.5lbs per week), but the interesting thing is that there's no transition to maintenance. You just keep on doing what you've been doing all along, because you're already eating at the maintenance level for that goal weight.
