Visual motivation

  • Today I took 100 marbles (well, the flat ones that are for decoration) and separated them into pounds I've lost and pounds till my second goal weight of 130. I wanted to put them in two identical glass jars but unfortunately the only ones of those I have are huge. So I settled for a divided wire mesh pencil holder. Now every time I lose a pound I can transfer another marble out of the to-lose side and see the done with side get bigger. (And I didn't expect 64 to already be visually so much more than 36.)

Do any of you have other ideas of ways to visually motivate yourself or show yourself how much progress you really have made?
  • That is a great idea I may try that.
  • Congratulations - what great work you've put in on that!
  • That's a fantastic idea, I'm gonna copy!! Thankyou.
  • I like that idea. But maybe would do it in 10ths of pounds so on the weeks I'm down (not only down) .2, I can still move marbles.

    Although where I'd put 400 marbles I don't know...
  • Olivia, Great idea. I'm very visual also so that might help more than the number on the scale.

Seagirl, LOL, maybe try beads instead!

Of course! Duh. Maybe split peas, I have those. I can spend my Friday night counting out 400 of them.
  • I LOVE THIS IDEA! I am going to copy it! Thank you
  • Love this idea!!! Fun.
  • this is a great idea -- i'm probably going to steal it too.
  • Whenever I start to feel like I will never get to goal, or I am stuck on a plateau, I carry around 2 of those kettle bell weights at the gym. I use 2 35# bells so that I can see and feel how much 70 lbs. really is. It always helps to put it in perspective for me.
I also now see why I was so tired. 70 extra lbs. is a ton to carry around.
I love the marble idea. Very clever.
