My First 5K!
Last weekend I ran my first 5K. I hadn't even planned it. The plan was for me to take pics of my son as he started and finished the race and to watch his little girl while we waited for him to come in. When I told him that I planned to be in shape enough to do this (run a 5K) by Spring, he encouraged me to join him for that day's race. He pushed his one year old, along with all her stuff, in her heavy stroller, encouraging me along. I cannot imagine a more positive experience for my first 5K. It was great to do this together, especially because it was my first. The baby laughed at the jostling all along the stoney dirt path through the desert, falling asleep happy at the end. We came in after about 85% of the runners. When we got our time, I was surprised with a personal best! This will be a cherished memory I'll keep close because it was with my son.
Mind you, I'm over 50 and started out 100 lbs over my optimum weight. I wasn't alone out there. A lot of the runners/walkers were not the stereotypical skinny athletes. It was a lot of fun. Join in! |
Congratulations! Sounds like a wonderful experience to treasure for a long time. Good luck as you train for your second 5k...and many to follow!

Terrific news! Wasn't it the most awesome feeling? I can totally relate. I ran my first 5k in Nov. with my son as well. I also am nearing 50, have Parkinson's disease and had 100 lbs. to lose at the beginning of my weight loss journey. The feeling that running has given me is euphoria that nothing else can. A true endorphin rush!
Best wishes with your future goals. |

Congratulations SEA ~ The first 5K I ever did was the day after I quit smoking (after more than 25 years) for good! Thanks to the support of my wife and kids not only did I finish but when on to do many-many more...still do them today every now and then...but we walk....

Thanks Everyone!
EZ - You made me grin. ;) My son is training for a marathon, but it would take surgery on my knee for me to do so. But as I reach goal, I hope to be able to maybe do a 10K. We'll see if my brace is enough support once the knees aren't supporting so much of me! |
