I started in a size P12 (petite 12). I've lost 17 pounds and am probably wearing a size 9/10 now. Maybe even a size smaller. I don't really know. But when is a good time to shop for new clothes? When what you're wearing is literally saggy on you and falling off? Or do you shop when your clothes are just feeling airy and loose? How much money do you blow on one shopping spree? And how many items do you typically buy in one shot? You'll be losing more.. so do you just buy here and there? Or do you go all out and buy everything?

I've lost 30 lbs. and gone from busting out of 24 pants and 3x shirts. I am slowly selling things that are too big on eBay and buying size 20 pants and 1-2x tops on sale and when I see special things I like. There are some things that I think need to fit properly for me to be comfortable: underwear, work out clothes, bras and jeans.

I would buy an outfit or 2 just to celebrate loosing weight(but thats just me), I wouldnt go all out and buy a completely new wadrobe though just because I will still be loosing weight. I agree that there are some things that need to fit properly too.

You can find great in between pieces at discount places like Ross, or TJ Maxx, that way you aren't spending too much on something you won't be in for long.

I buy stuff at Goodwill that almost fits, because I so, so enjoy watching myself gradually fit into things. When I was actively loosing, I'd go try on my "too smalls" each week to see the change. Highly motivating.

I won't have to look for new pants until I'm out of 16s. I can just get them on and buttoned now, so that shouldn't become a problem for another month at least. After that, I'm going to HAVE to buy another pair of jeans, because I just won't have any. I think I might just buy one though, because I RARELY go out and am mostly in sweats.

Good question Pudgebrownie. It's my payday today and I'm wondering what I ought to do. I'd like to lose a considerable amount more - 10 lbs or so - so I'm thinking about buying some clothes a little tight and (hopefully) shrinking into them.

I want to do the bulk of my "new wardrobe" shopping in the U.S. (I won't be back stateside until August...) so I'm probably just going to get some basics for work and a few party dresses now.

I have a sewing machine and take mine up for awhile. I used to be a clothes horse, but my current job only requires jeans and t-shirts, so the whole clothes thing has gone out the window.

I like Goodwill, garage sales, consignment stores, etc. for the in between times. Maybe find someone who sews who could take them up for a bit.

At some point though, ya gotta go shopping! Great fun! With the change of seasons right now, might be a good time for a few new classic pieces. Jackets, sweaters, sweatshirts can survive several size changes as well as skirts, if you dress up a lot. Plus skirts, as long as they don't have pleats are easy to take up. Dress jackets with darts can also be taken up, so you could get them to last until spring with maybe only one session of tayloring.

Jeans can be taken up, but are tougher and you can only do so much there.

I am right now only buying clothes on sale.

Except for lingerie, because I'm in the camp that it should fit well, so even if it's only something I can wear for a month more, I'll rather have it fit now.

But I also have clothes that are maybe out of style now that I used to fit into so I'm hoping for when I can fit back into those....

what I do after that... I guess I'll have to wait and see!!!!

I've tried to keep three things in mind when it comes to clothing shopping during my journey.

One is a friend who was advised by her WW leader to get rid of her clothes as she got smaller. You aren't going back to those sizes.

One is an old co-worker who had one of those seemingly effortless bodies. When asked how she kept it, she replied matter of factly that when her pants get tight, she cut back til they fit again.

The last is that I'm in this to feel better about myself, but also to look better. And I don't want to wait like an ugly caterpillar to be my ideal size and magically become a butterfly.

So keeping this in mind, I buy clothes (a little snug so I can shrink into them) and I'm on a budget (I buy thrift stores and deep discount racks mostly), I sell the old ones on e-bay (no going back!) and be the best butterfly I can be at right now.

Lucky for me I already have quite a bit of clothing in my closet that's too small right now. I have a couple pairs of jeans that I know will fit pretty well once I lose 10 to 15 more. Cause they fit everytime I've managed to get that low before. And then I kept a lot of my favorite things I didn't get rid of when I kept gaining. Hopefully I won't be able to fit in those for too long once I actually do fit in them again.

Hmm, selling on Ebay sounds like a good idea. How much do you usually get? I have a lot of super cute clothes that haven't been worn much at all that I'm looking to be relieved of.

JayLei that is EXACTLY what I think, too. Having your fat clothes around to fall back into is a terrible idea!

I'm fortunate, in a way, that I have a lot of clothes I've simply been too stubborn to throw away. I've been half tempted to get those plastic circular things to put in my closet numbered 12, 14, 16, 18, 20.
I have some stretch-waist pants that are a big baggy, but I can wear them because I tend to run thick in the waist, and I keep being able to move tops from the "too small--too stubborn" closet to the "active" closet. I wore a shirt today that I last wore in 1986!

In answer to the question, I plan to wait until I get to goal before I buy new clothes. I've heard that the last 10 pounds can change your shape, so I don't want to buy a bunch of clothes and then not have them fit right.

Skirts and shirts at second hand stores/ebay when they are falling off of me.

Skirts are are more forgiving of weight fluctuations, this means you can spend less money when you are still shrinking and have more money when you reach your goal weight.


I have the good fortune of losing weight easily, so for me dropping sizes happens every 1 to 2 months. I am still very large though so this might change.

I wear a lot of dresses so I can kind of get away with wearing them a little bigger than they should be - but some of my stuff is just absolutely too big. I'm actually facing the problem now where I can't find the basic stuff I want to wear right now to buy - and I've been saving money for clothes since the beginning of my lifestyle change, so I am prepared to spend some money!

I blame the lack of options in New Zealand.
