I'm 5'9 andt o be a size 6 I have to weigh around 135. At least 10 years ago :D. I drop a dress size every ~12 pounds or so.

Lindsey79 09-30-2010 01:38 PM

Wow--thanks for the feedback everyone. It's really interesting. It looks like for some people a size 6 would be in the 135 lb range and for others somewhere around 150 or even 160. Quite a range and another reminder on how the scale is an imperfect measuring tool for weight loss.

SpoonSockSpork12 10-01-2010 10:17 PM

So for perspective, I thought a shorty like myself (5'4") could add my measurements. ;)

180 - 190, Size 16
170 - 180, Size 14
155 - 170, Size 12
<155, Size 10

I haven't been below 155 since high school, but curiously enough, in high school I wore size 12's at that weight. I'm only 22 now. My jeans brands have been Old Navy, Express, and American Eagle.

Anyway, with all you tall ladies' numbers, I thought it was curious that my dress sizes were comparable.

I'm 5'8" and currently 168. I still wear a 14 from most stores, but they are getting loose so I'm probably going to fall into the twelves in another 4 pounds or so. I am a pear shape, though, so my bottoms are always a lot bigger than my small top (I wear small-medium currently).

Whenever I get lower than 150, I start becoming quite small - I am pear shaped and definitely a size 6 on top... but my butt is still a size 8/10 (depending on brand). From 150 to 135 - makes a HUGE difference in size. Thats when people start saying "Wow, stop losing! Or you'll waste away to nothing".

What also makes a huge difference is how fit you are - no muscle, then larger at a smaller weight.

I think you can take for granted, on a thread comprised mainly of women, that everyone understands that your size is a range or a tendency, and not an absolute or objective thing; we all try on clothes, right?

For me, I mostly wore 12s for the most gigantic range--like from 190 to 163-ish.

Now, in the mid 150s, I'm suddenly a 10 leaning more toward 8s than 12s. Since lately all the weight is coming off my stomach, and most of what's left seems to me to be on my butt/thighs, I'm hoping that the next ten pounds could make enough of a difference to make the center of my size zone an 8.

This is interesting to read, I figured I wouldt fall below a size 12 even when i hit 150 just because my mother has the same frame as me and in her 20s was determined to get into single digits and at 135 was at the bottom end of a size 10 and a doctor told her she needed to start gaining weight before she made herself sick....

this did remind me, however, that sizes have changed due to consumers vanity over the years which makes me hope maybe I too may attain a size 8/10 with out looking skeletal :D

with the bras... yeah i think thats a VS thing, i've been consistently a small C since my late teens and i went in there to get measured a year or so ago and they had me in a D... more vanity sizing lol

My height is just shy of 5'9" and at 165 I was comfortably wearing 8s and fitting into many 6s. I even had a few size 4s although I think they were a larger cut style. This may have a lot to do with my weight distribution. I have a large chest so my extra 6-8lbs is on my chest not my hips at that weight. It all just depends but it is possible to fit into that size at that weight, especially, if you're well-toned.

Lindsey79 10-04-2010 09:52 PM

Once again, ladies, thanks for all the feedback. It just really interesting to see other women's real-life experiences. I find this so much more helpful than any height/weight range chart I could find on the internet.

And thanks pnkrckpixikat for the comment on the VS bra thing -- I'm glad to see someone else has had that experience and it wasn't just all in my head. I definitely think they've been doing some vanity sizing of their own as well.

As you've already pointed out, it really varies so much store to store and by the person. At 158 I was a pretty solid 8/10 and my goal was a 6/8 too. With a medium frame I figured I needed to be between 137-145 to be that size. However, now, having gained some weight (and a good portion of it being muscle), I'm a pretty solid 8/10 (10 in more dress clothes) and 20lbs heavier. The last time I was at this weight I was a pretty solid size 12. It varies so much depending on body composition.

Also, at my lowest weight, I had one random, size 12 dress, that I loved but agonized over a little because I couldn't believe it was a size 12. Which was silly in retrospect, but it just goes to show you!

I think 152, based on your current weight and size, probably sounds like a solid endgame for now. You'll definitely reevaluate as you go. :)

I'm the same as you height wise ~ the last time I was a size 6 was back in the '80s when I was only 120 pounds! I am broad bone structure wise. So you see, it really gets down to frame as well! Forget the size thing ~ it's so changeable over the years and brands anyway!

skintoskincombat 12-16-2013 08:52 AM

When I was smaller I ranged in sizes from 6-10 and I was 145 I was even 125 at one point and never really remember going below a 6 even tho I probably was.

gardenerjoy 12-16-2013 10:13 AM

What a variety!

I just bought clothes and I found the perfect dress for me -- it's two pieces in the same fabric. So it's really a top and a skirt, but put together they look like a dress. The top is size 10 and the bottom is size 14. Best-fitting dress I ever had! LOL!

Even in high school, when I was 125-140, I never wore an 8. But that was eons ago, so if I got to that weight now, I would probably get to an 8 in modern sizing. But, I would lose all my curves (something that made my high school life miserable), so I have no desire to go there.

truehappiness 12-16-2013 02:47 PM

I'm 5' 8.5'' and currently weigh 149 and am still a comfortable size 8.

For my body:

8 starts at about 156 and down and a currently I am a comfortable 8
10 from about 157 - 166
12 from about 167-175

Based on the past even when I was 145 I was still a loose 8. For my body, I would say I am a tight 6 at 140-141 and a comfortable 6 at probably 135-136.

But, that is just me. I tend to lose weight in my upper thighs (inner and outer) the slowest. I can fit the waist of 6's soon I bet, but getting them over my thighs isn't possible yet.
