Getting rid of fat clothes?

For those of you have dropped sizes...do you get rid of those clothes? Or do you hang on to them? I'm torn. I really want to get rid of them so that I don't give myself a safety to fall back on. Maybe if I don't have any clothes that size I won't go back? I dunno...what are your thoughts?

JessLess 09-06-2010 04:00 PM

This will be my third major weightloss so I am putting some on a handy clothing rack someone installed in my attic. Some I will take in, and some I will sell on eBay. I threw out or sold all my thinner clothes in a bout of self-acceptance and really regret it.

I've only gone down one size so I'll be hanging onto my 14s for awhile, though I have no intention of ever fitting into them again. I think I'll toss them once I get to a size 10. As I get smaller and close to/at goal, I intend to use any times when my clothes get tight as a sign to buckle down, so I won't be needing my fat clothes.

rainydays 09-06-2010 04:34 PM

I'm getting ready to purchase my first pair of 14s (maybe 12 depending on the brand and style/cut, my hips are much smaller than my stomach) in a very looong time. I found a pair of 22s in my closet the other day--my husband said when I held them up to myself it looked like I could *almost* fit into one half of them. It feels great to keep a couple things around just for that, but honestly, I feel like it's better to get rid of most of it!

Jessica88 09-06-2010 04:48 PM

The only clothes I kept were a shirt, shorts, and dress from when I first started just so I can compare at the end.
I either gave my clothes to friends or goodwill. I want them outta here so I have motivation to keep going and not go back and think that I will still have clothes to wear. If I don't have any clothes in bigger sizes and my current clothes are getting tighter I know I need to get back on plan and workout more because I don't want to have to go buy bigger clothes!

I have a rolling rack in my basement and did a pass though when I put stuff down there and I just did another pass though but I still have the drss pants/jackets coats/belts/leather jackets etc, I guess the expencive stuff. i just can't part with that stuff yet even thought it is 2 sizes too big. It is out of the way so i don't have to look at it either.
Maye by next fall I can get rid of the rest of it.

Shmead 09-06-2010 05:02 PM

I got rid of everything down to size 16 (started at 28!), but have kept clothes since then, as I am hoping to get pregnant and depending on how I grow, may well need some big clothes before I am ready for maternity clothes. If all goes as planned, I'll get rid of all the big clothes in a couple years!

Going through my closet when I was about 50 lbs down (size 22ish) was a huge turning point for me. I discovered SO MANY clothes I'd bought from a catalog and then hidden when they turned out to be too small because I was too ashamed to even return them--couldn't look at them. I also discovered a bunch of old stuff that almost fit, and became motivational. I kept a few of my original clothes for comparison's sake--the pants and shirt I wore the most, and a pair of pants that was my "skinny" pair for about ten years.

I also really felt good donating those clothes because there aren't very many clothes over size 18 at Goodwill, and so I liked to think some woman like me would be very grateful to find stuff (some new!) in her size.

nancymae 09-06-2010 05:10 PM

I have already gone down from a 22-24 to 18-20 and the 2o's are getting loose. And like someone else mentioned I also have lots of stuff that I have purchased that did not fit but (who knows why) I didn't return, so basically I ma only buying tops (mostly at goodwill!) and underwear. Sometimes when I am feeling out of control I work on sorting and orgainzing this stuff. It's almost as much fun as shopping!

I toss or donate everything the second it doesn't fit.

I keep bags on top of the drier, one for each: toss/cut up for rags, dress for success and goodwill.

If something was especially expensive and I really like it would have it altered.

I have saved my cloths in the past "just in case" but I don't think that is a good mind set.

NorthernExposure 09-06-2010 06:01 PM

I have donated almost all of my "fat clothes" to goodwill. I'm currently in an 18 and still have a few 20's around, but got rid of all the 24/26's, with the exception of a few 3x t-shirts that I can still wear around the house :) I never bought 22's, just kept wearing my too-big clothes until it just got completely ridiculous. Had to pretty much buy a whole new fall wardrobe last week. Yes, it's expensive...but much better than the alternative! I shop sales, TJ Maxx and some of the second hand stores for "transition" clothes.

Eliana 09-06-2010 06:05 PM

Out they go! I keep a few pants to amuse myself, but that's it. I have no love for ANY of it.

Luddy 09-06-2010 06:38 PM

I finally lost a size in the past few weeks and am now at a 16 and can zip 14's so I have no want to keep my 18's. Not even for comparison. I have a couple of shirts and stuff I like enough to get taken in but that's it. Like others I'll pay more attention if my clothes get tighter to get back on track (if needed, I have no plan to let any smaller sizes get tight though).

Got a card in the mail the other day from some Goodwill local type saying they needed used clothes and will be by to pick them up in a week and a half if I had some so this is probably the most perfect timing ever.

ncuneo 09-06-2010 10:34 PM

I save some of it for future maternity clothes and the rest goes to Goodwill. I don't need them taking up space in my closet - I need room for my new smaller clothes!

kateleestar 09-07-2010 09:33 AM

I got rid of all the 20's and XXL's, but I kept some of my 18's and XL tops, for prego reasons too. I can just keep these clothes instead of buying maternity stuff in a year and a half (when we plan to get pregnant).. it'll save me $$ and when I'm done with that, I'll donate them to Goodwill. Yey!

I say out with the old. I'm keeping one pair of fat pants, one giant shirt and my wedding dress. Everything else has gotta go! :)

AZ Sunrises 09-07-2010 10:21 AM

I have a stack of things ready to go to Goodwill sitting on my dresser. I have several items with tags still on them that are going to a consignment shop. I don't have a reason to keep them. I won't be this big again.

mercury42 09-07-2010 11:21 AM

I always buy clothes that are the size I "want" to be, instead of things that will actually fit now. Then whenever I lose some weight I'll go through in a flurry and try everything on. It's really rewarding when a new jacket or pair of jeans fits. Pretty much all of my bigger clothes I wore out to the point of being unwearable, that was a huge motivation to lose weight, because I had to choose between losing weight and buying bigger clothes.

Lori Bell 09-07-2010 01:42 PM

Like Jessless, I've done this a few times. I have lost a fairly significant amount of weight...Gave away all my fat clothes, gained the weight back and had to go purchase new fat clothes, (With my head hug low in shame.)

So this time I have saved everything except for any clothing with rips, holes or stains...or just plain ugly. Underwear also got tossed. I've dropped 12 dress sizes, (size 30 to a 6) so as you can imagine I have quite a load. I have them all packed neatly in totes in the attic.

At one point I decided my kids could sell them/donate them at my estate sale, (When I die...;)) But I have now found a fun new hobby that I'll be using many things for, (only items made of really nice fabric). I am really glad I decided tro keep them.

I'm refurbishing them. I have made a few "new" wrap-around skirts out of a couple big skirts/dress for summer, and now I have a few winter skirts all cut apart and pinned on a patten to make "new" fitted skirts. Just waiting for another rainy day to finish them up. The fabric is absolutely gorgeous, and I loved these skirts even when I was fat, so I'm really excited to have new ones made from them. Nice fabric is a fortune to buy, so I'm saving some $$ and sharpening my sewing skills. I also saw some throw pillow ideas in a magazine that I might make with a few of my old blazers and tops. It's fun.

Just a little warning though, if any of you try this and go out and buy a patten...beware. They do NOT vanity size on most patterns. I wear a size six in most every store I go into, BUT I wear a size 12 in McCall's and Simplicity patterns. YIKES!

I get rid of them, and it's very important to me that I do.

My therapist who worked with Overeaters Anonymous for over ten years told me that she saw the people who hung on to their old size clothes were more apt to gain the weight back than the people who didn't, and that's something I can easily understand.

The second I buy something new, I throw out what doesn't fit me anymore. If I put on a shirt that doesn't fit - in the trash it goes, IMMEDIATELY.

For me this is a permanent change and there is absolutely no need for me to hang on to those clothes. They don't fit me, plain and simple, and they won't ever fit me again.

It's part of my process, and I wouldn't have it any other way.

kaplods 09-07-2010 01:57 PM

The four or five times I've lost large amounts of weight I've done it both ways, and it really didn't make any difference in terms of regaining. Not having clothes to wear didn't prevent me from regaining, it only meant increased stress and credit card debt, doing laundry more frequently and/or avoiding going out in public unless absolutely necessary.

Saving clothing wasn't as helpful as I expected either (whether it be smaller or larger clothing), because when I got back into a particular size, it seemed that I was shaped differently, and the clothing didn't fit right - or styles had changed...

My strategy this time is to sell my clothes as soon as they get big enough to look sloppy. Consignment shops are very popular around here, and the plus sizes sell quickly. Because I'm a bargain hunter, I even occasionally get back more than I originally paid (since consignment shops get half, that means those clothes sold for more than twice what I paid).

I can find a lot of nice clothes that way too. There's not a lot in my size, but I've found some really pretty things. Most look like they've never been worn (some still had the original price tags still on).

Avezy44 09-07-2010 02:35 PM

I donate them to charity and family & friends. At first its kind of scary getting rid of them because you aren't 100% sure you're not going to need them but once you do, you can't wait to drop another waist size or pant size and get some new clothes. My philosphy is that if I am stupid enough to put myself through this again, I deserve to have to drop a few dollars to get new stuff :) Do whatever makes you comfortable though. I will say it's kind of like burning a picture of an ex friend or boyfriend after a messy breakup. Kind of empowering.
