Is it possible?
Hello, I'm fairly new to the community and just wanted to ask a few questions about weight loss.
I'm 22 years old and weigh approx. 280 pounds. I'm currently on WW, (have been for about a week) and I walk/fast walk on the treadmill for about 20 minutes twice a day. Would it be possible to lose about 100 pounds in a year or less by continuing the diet and walking/running? Is there anyone who has lost 100 pounds in a year or less? |
It is possible, but don't let it discourage you if you lose slower than you hoped. I certainly get frustrated at times with how slow my progress has been and I know I could do a lot better. But losing slowly is a **** of a lot better than not at all!
Good luck, and :welcome: |

I agree with Aclai, it is probably doable, but patience is the big key. Ive been on Weight Watchers for 7 1/2 months so far and have lost just short of 40 pounds, so that's just a little more than 5 pounds per month. My original goal was 10 pounds per month... but it didn't happen and I'm still FINE with that.
The way I feel now is amazing and slow and steady is the way to go. So try for the 100, but don't be discouraged if you have a little longer to goal till goal. You can do it!!!!! This is an exciting time in your life. Your world is about to change in more ways than you can even imagine. |
Also, you CAN lose weight by walking. Keep up the great work, and if you are feeling stronger and want to do more cardio and weightlifting go for it, but like I said before, walking is still great and def. not a waste of your time.

I did it :)
The main thing is consistency and commitment. If you're really serious about this, you can make no excuses! Good luck!! |
I've lost 60 pounds in just over 3 months. But I started out at 342, so weight loss was faster for me (the more you weigh, the more calories you burn doing well, anything, lol)...and I do 20-30 minutes on the stationary bicycle 4 or 5 days a week (biking burns more calories than walking and less stress on the joints), plus I go for walks when I can, and I keep my calories between 1200-1500 a day. And I completely expect to lose another 40 by the new year. But that's just me. Good luck!

The more weight you have to lose, the faster you lose it. If you lose fast and it slows down don't give up. On average, a person can lose 2lbs a week in a healthy way. You could lose a lot more than that in the beginning. YOU CAN DO IT if you work hard enough. You will know when your body is strong enough to step up your activity.
|
Yes you can! Keep exercising, that will make a world of difference. My friend lost 100 lbs in 10 months. It is doable and a lot of work but oh so worth it. YOU CAN DO IT!!
|
Exercise burns calories and will help you lose weight. The reason why people say it isn't any good is that if all you do is exercise and do not pay close attention to diet, you'll eat more because you are more hungry, which cancels out the benefit (in terms of weight loss. It still helps your health).
Starting at 280 at 22, 100 lbs a year is quite doable. You just have to stick with it, even on those days when you have no motivation. But if you do that, it's impossible to fail. Eat less/move more and your body will burn its fat stores. |
WELCOME!! Yes, it certainly is possible. But you may find that as you lose you need to increase exercise a bit and decrease food a bit. I started out around 300 pounds and lost 100 pounds in 55 weeks. The key really is consistency!
|
At your age, as long as you are consistently on plan, it is certainly possible.
|
First off I would like to :welcome3: you to 3FC!
Yes it is possible I lost 80 pounds in 7 months I started in January...... I have around 40 pounds left and 4 months left in the year. So you are going to get a YES  from me! I do think you can do it. :D |
A couple of years ago I went from 250lbs down to 190lbs by altering my diet and just walking. I eventually stalled and I think it's because at some point you have to change it up and increase intensity but for now power walking is perfectly adequate IMHO.

It's possible, my girlfriend lost 192 pounds in 20 months. She did WW and a TREMENDOUS amount of exercise. I'd show up and be happy with my 1.2 pound loss and she'd be losing 8-10 pounds a week. Of course while I was watching TV, she was biking 50-100 miles a weekend. Don't set yourself up for failure, but it's possible with a LOT of hard work.

Wow thank you so much for the positive feedback! It makes me want to work THAT much harder! I've been buying WW meals from our local grocery store, don't really have lot of money to spend for getting on the WW online, so was wondering, what meals should I eat and how many should I eat inbetween? Currently I have 3 meals a day, and approx. 1-2 apples inbetween meals. Am I getting enough Calories? I'm afraid if I don't take in enough Calories a day I won't lose the weight properly. Any diet plans for WW suggestions? I hope I'm not asking too much LOL.
Thanks in advance, you guys are amazing! |
It's definitely doable, but like everyone else has said, commitment is key. The other thing is the remember to take each day one at a time. If you fall down, get back up, dust yourself off and persevere. ^^
|
If you are eating those meals regularly, you are getting in too much sodium and not enough protein. You need a variety of nutrients. Have another vegetable and or a salad with chickpeas, etc. to up the protein. You need 2 servings of good fat a day - olive oil, etc. and 2 servings of dairy. I hope you are eating a good breakfast that contains protein. Protein keeps us feeling full and satisfied longer. How many points are you eating?

I agree. While freezer dinners can be very helpful (especially if you hate to cook like me), they aren't meant to comprise most of you're food intake. If WW is too expensive for you, I recommend trying Calorie Counting. There are lots of helpful websites where you can track your calories (fitday, thedailyplate, sparkpeople) and lots of calorie counters here on 3FC who can answer your questions. Oh, and it's free!
OT- omg, LacieRenee, I love your avatar! haha |
I think it is totally possible! I've lost almost 50 in 8 months, and I haven't been on program the whole time like I should have been. I have consistently lost each week, but I know some weeks I could have lost more had I been more dedicated to my diet and exercise :) I do forgive myself because I'm only human and trying to completely change the way I eat, and I'm really happy with my progress. I hope to hit 75 by the year end!
I did WW before I had my kids and was successful, but honestly, I didn't want to spend the money this time for meetings or WW online. I know some people mentioned online calorie counting sites - I use www.sparkpeople.com - it works fantastic for me. You put in your exercise, too - so it takes that into account when giving you a calorie range. It might take a little bit to get all the foods you like put into your favorites there, which does make it easier, but once that is done, it's super easy to track each day IMO. |
Its possible. :) You should join us 280 Ladies! We are a thread in the 20 somethings forum! Lots of us there are working toward what you are, and we all need info and support. I'm sad to say I don't know how to post a link on here... but your a bright girl.. you'll find it. lol
Welcome, and yes, it is possible!! |
|
lol, thank you MUCH!!!
|
Especially with your age, and your starting weight, you've got this with some consistent effort over time.
I think the only thing that flagged me was the guilty feeling. That should be a little cautionary moment to make sure you're keeping everything in balance. Losing 100lbs in a year is possible but what's even more important? Having that same 100lbs gone in 10 years. Shoot for the long haul and you'll do great! |
