I am all over the place with size. Right now I am a good solid 16 petite and they are getting loose. The brand/style makes a big difference for me, always has. I have one pair of 16 Women's Petite jeans and they are getting very loose. They have a low waist on them. Another pair of 16W capri jeans are about to fall off of me. Then I have a pair of Lee Riders size 18 capris that still fit slightly snug, but are wearable without being uncomfortable. I have found Lees run smaller, at least on me. My belly seems to be what keeps me from wearing smaller sizes. Hope that isn't an issue much longer.
I am 5'3" and currently weigh 168. I have had to have something that doesn't cut me at the waist or push my fat up into my boob area when I sit down. It is just too uncomfortable.
Yeah, sizing is ridiculous. I was a 24 now I'm a 20, yet some things I can get in an 18 then some are 22, it varies. I'm trying not to freak out about the size, it seems most people have this problem with sizing. I was also a size 16 when I was about 240ish lbs, but I'm tall and pretty much evenly proportioned. Try not to let the sizing issue mess with you, at least they're getting loose regardless!!

Reason: typo
I never properly fit in size 18's. The whole "W" issue (16W, 18, 18W) really confused the heck out of me and none of those sizes ever fit me right. They were made for much taller people than I! That said, I've come down from 20.
I am 5'4":
16's fit rather nicely right around 195
14's are now fitting at 188 (And I can squeeze into a 12, but it's not pretty. )
women's sizing is cut much fuller, meaning everything is a bit longer and roomier. Having said that, a 16W is not the same as a 16 misses. A 16w is more equivalent to a size 18 or 20 in misses.

It's definitely not the height, it's the way they are cut.
Even at my biggest, I could not wear plus sized bottoms, they are cut for women who are much more of a pear shape than I am, with bigger rears and hips. Although I'm thick through the waist, my hips and butt are relatively small and plus sized pants look awful on me (skirts too actually). I had to find forgiving misses XLs (knits with elastic waists) - they'd be snug in the waist even with elastic but that's what fit me ok everywhere else.
On the other hand, I am bigger on top and still wearing plus sized tops and expect to be for a while - I'll definitely be in 14 bottoms, maybe even 12s before I expect to be able to wear misses sizes in tops.

That's funny. As I outgrew misses sizes, the plus sizes didn't fit right until i started losing my pear shape and putting on relatively more weight in the middle.
I bought one pair of size 16s that ended up being too big at my highest weight. I had to wear them with a belt, haha. I'm 5'7" and was 210 at the time.
5'9-1/2 and 238#. In between both sizes right now. In very baggy 18's and can fit into & zip 16's when I suck my stomach in...couple more weeks until 16.
