Hip size and weight loss

I have wide hips. Even when I was a young teen, my hips have always been the "childbearing" type lol. When I started my weight loss journey my hips were 46" and my size 16s were feeling tight. Now I'm at 43" and size 16s are way too big and 14s are a little too snug for my liking. Obviously, one of the reasons I'm trying to lose weight is to be able to wear smaller clothes. Last time I lost weight, I got down to 160 pounds and was still in a size 14. Will I be stuck in 14s forever because of my hips? :( Anyone else with large hips?

I have the same problem. At last measure, my hips were 47". Most of my pants are a comfy 20. I'm trying not to get hung up on clothing sizes. As long as I look and feel good, that's what matters.

When I was 257 pounds, I was disproportionately pear-shaped and wore a 18 on top and 22 on the bottom (57" hips! :faint:) So naturally I assumed I'd end up as a smaller version of my pear shape.

Nope! :D

The weight came off from the top down and for a while I was even more out of proportion! But the last 25 pounds or so came off 100% from my hips and butt and I ended up in size 4 pants (36" hips). Sometimes I wear a larger size on top and smaller on the bottom now! Who would have thunk it? :dizzy:

We all have a spot where we hold fat and it's usually the very last place to come off. But in my experience, it WILL come off in the end!

Meg, that is very encouraging. I am in the same boat, huge hips, and a small waist in comparision. My size 30 jeans won't stay up at my waist, a belt isn't currently an option, and I'm constantly hiking the pants up yet a size 28 doesn't quite fit. I wore elastic waist pants for far too long to go back to them (other than one recently purchased dressy pair). I only wear my old (elastic waist) pants around the house now. I hate being a pear shape,

That is encouraging, Meg! I have 44 inch hips, seemingly regardless of weight loss. I'm hoping it'll take effect there soon.

Meg, it seems like you just made quite a few people happy! That gives me hope! Thanks!

Another question for those with small waists and big hips, how do you find pants that fit well!? For me, if it fits in the hips, it's always WAY too big in the waist. Do you have all of your pants tailored? A belt doesn't work for everything.

I also have very large hips, I have 44.5" hips and wear a size 18-20pant, 18's are still a little snug on me and the 20's practically fall off...so I guess I'm in between sizes. O.o

Pants/trousers are my biggest problem at present. 28" waist 42.5" hips. So I'm mostly wearing skirts. Or my gardening trousers (about to split at the knee). My workout trousers look good tucked into boots but it's too warm for that now. I also have a pair of trousers I hold up with a silk sash (serious fancy dress) but they are stupidly big by the end of the day.

I can now fit into one pair I was using as a 'pantsometer' but so can a pillow between my back and the waistband. This, friends, is not a good look. I may be in Meg's 'even more out of proportion' phase as things are so bad it's silly at present.

I'm now having a big push, bearing Meg's experience (and others') in mind.

Yep. That's where I need it to come off. *nods wisely*

(actually, I need it to come off everywhere... but I couldn't pass up the pun )

^^^ Huh? I'm not interested in diet plans or training programs that promise to target fat on the hips. But thanks.

sf40 04-20-2010 04:19 PM

Large hips here, too. I don't have access to my measurements right now, but I recall the hips are around 44" and I am in a size 14.

You may or may not be in a larger pant than top size when you reach your goal. Much of what is on the hips is fat and will hopefully go away in time (Meg is terrific inspiration!), but much is due to bone structure. It sounds like your hip size might be due in part to your bones, so while you will hopefully get below a 14, it might not be realistic to hope to get into a size 4.

I also share the problem of many pants that fit the hips are way too big in the waist. Some brands, Ann Taylor comes to mind, carry cuts that are meant for curvy figures. I don't like wearing belts, so I always look for those cuts, or regular cuts that don't "gap" too much at the waist.

Hey fellow pearshapers: no matter what size I am, my hips are always at least 18 inches bigger than my waist. I try to think of it as a good thing, weight around the middle is worse for you than below the waist!

pink sparkle 04-20-2010 11:01 PM

LOL. What makes this a little worse is I'm not even a pear. I'm an hourglass. A really fat hourglass :o. My bust and hips are about the same and my waist (right now) is about 12 inches smaller. Hopefully, I'll be a smaller hourglass soon enough!

I have a 30 inch, waist 46 inch hips and I find pants with a lower rise (sits right on the hip) tend to fit best. Best not perfect. The only way to get a perfect fit is to have them tailored. Also any pant style labeled "curvy" usually works out too.
