Default weight change lag time

Hi - I'm new here, so I'm not sure if this has already been covered, but I'm just curious:

I've noticed that it takes at least a week for my scale to reflect any changes caused by exercise or diet, whether positive or negative. This can present an obstacle when I'm starting weight loss attempts, because I don't get any reward right away - likewise, if I eat too much the feedback is delayed, so I often don't realize that there's a problem. Is this common? How long does it generally take you guys to see a change after you've stepped up (or back) your efforts?

It depends on what it is - if I eat something with too much sodium, that usually shows up as water retention the very next day. Otherwise, it feels like I usually have a one day lag, so Monday shows up on the scale on Wednesday.
