Superbowl

Well, I made it through the weekend, not terrible but not great, had probably 10 -12 beers but it was Bud 55 so like 550 to 600 calories in beer for the day, I took a party sub that I made with lettuce tomato, fat free mayo and Turkey and Low fat cheese, turned out really good, and I ate a couple slices from that, another friend was a savior and brought a shrimp boil with corn and shirmp and it was awesome and fewer calories then the brats and burgers that were there. probabyl had 10 -15 srimp. I did have a bowl of potato soup but went with a smaller bowl then they had out, had a few chips with dip, did not put them on my plate, figured I had around 2200- 2500 calories, so not to bad but not great, I am gettting back on workout program ASAP. Thanks again for all the encouragement, and good luck!!!!

Weekly Update - Week 9

Starting Weight - 260 lbs
Current Weight - 220 lbs
Loss This Week -1 lbs
Total Loss - 40 lbs

Well, I was kind of worried about this. With losing 5lbs last week and weighing-in the morning after my second biggest binge on plan it frankly could have been worse. I was really hoping for at least a 2 to get into the 210's, but hopefully I will see a bit of an extra bounce next week not carrying post-Superbowl weight;)

Also overall it was a decent week, but not one of my strongest, especially in the gym. This week I'm on the road most of the week, so hope I can do a good job and keep making progress.

Nutrition Observations

Mon - 1624 cals
Tue - 1789 cals
Wed - 1221 cals
Thu - 1820 cals
Fri - 1744 cals
Sat - 1895 cals
Sun - 2973 cals (Superbowl potluck party)

Well the only thing interesting this week was that my overall calories was a little higher than usual but still within my targets except for Sunday. That might be correlated to my lower loss, but I'm not going to make any adjustments yet.

Did a pretty good job on eating to be honest, it seems to be getting easier and easier.

The obvious outlier was the Superbowl party which I posted about earlier today. One thing to add to that post was how crappy I felt after my poor eating Sunday night. I didn't feel that bad mentally, because I prepared for that evening all weekend, and didn't cheat that much more than I was prepared to. But I really felt crappy physically later that evening and this morning. It was the most suger and fat I've had in over a month so I guess it's not surprising...well I guess it is, because 2 months ago I could have eaten way more junk food than that and felt fine.

I'm going to take that as a good sign!

Exercise Observations

Monday - Gym
Tuesday - Gym
Wednesday - Gym
Thursday - Nothing
Friday - Nothing
Saturday - Gym
Sunday - Rest

Well, this week was a little worse than usual in terms of hitting the gym. Thursday and Friday were super busy with appointments and constant meetings and I just couldn't get away during work hours and had plans after work both days. A little disappointed with Thu/Fri b/c I probably should have found a way to go to the gym at least one of those two days.

The 4 days I did go to the gym though I had good workouts, put a lot into it and worked it out pretty good. My overall fitness level is increasing slowly.

One big accomplishment was this week I ran a mile on the treadmill consecutively for the first time sine I started this process!!! That was great, I usually do multiple miles each trip, but jogging has hurt and I just haven't been able to just run a straight mile.

I was doing my walking warmup, and just turned the treadmill up to 6 to run a bit at the end of the warmup. I felt really good so just kept running and ended up doing a mile!

Looking forward to next week
Challenging week this week as I'm on the road for 3.5 days. Going to continue to try the same behaviours that have worked for me in the past.

NIce job

Good job last week, 1 pound with the binge is great!!! Also congrats on the mile run straight I am trying to get there as well!!!!!

Hitting the Gym hard today.

Way to go and you will be in the 210's before long

Later Tucker

Feb 9th - Good start to this trip

I'm about halfway through my longest trip yet on plan. So far really proud of myself.

Made it a priority to go to the gym at home yesterday before heading to the airport. Did another 2ish mile airport walk. Then had a great healthy salad from Chipotle when I arrived at my destination.

Today I went to the grocery store and stocked up for 2 dinners, found a new grocery store with lots of great healthy deli choices. Got some brown rice sushi, shrimp, salad, fruit, and a couple of small steamer dinners.

Also went down to the gym after work and got in a solid full workout.

Great start to the trip! Just need to stay strong for 2 more days!

Feb 10th - "Struggling" with weight

I was browsing the introductions forum and saw someone post the following sentence...

I've been struggling with weight for a long time

I sort of glanced over it because that sentence gets posted a lot around here and I think it myself often. But for some reason when I read it today I had a bit of a personal epiphany about the use of the word "struggle". Not sure if this will make sense to anybody else...

I've never "struggled" with weight gain or being large. Struggle implies that I'm trying (expending effort) and failing. When I have gained weight or been stagnant at a higher weight, it's because I'm not "struggling". When I struggle (i.e. work at it, think about it, work on it) with diet/exercise issues I lose weight, or at least maintain at a healthier weight.

So I want to "struggle" with weight because if I'm not, it means I'm being lazy and apathetic towards it which is a guarantee of moving the ticker in the wrong direction.

I'm not sure if that makes sense on paper, but it sticks out clearly in my head;)

Feb 12th - Nailed this last trip

Well my 4th business trip on plan is in the books. I'm super pleased, I absolutely killed it (in a good way!) in terms of nutrition. Especially in comparison to my normal 3 meals out.

Here was a very typical travel day's worth of eating out before...

Old Breakfast - 2 biscuits and gravy, 4-8 pieces of bacon, scrambled eggs, maybe a little fruit.

Old Lunch - Large sub (like a philly cheesesteak) or a big burger with all the fixins (bacon, guac, etc) with fries.

Old Dinner - Most of a meatlover's pizza with a candy bar in room, or if out, a cream based soup followed by a large seafood alfredo pasta with lots of bread, dessert and usually a few drinks.

On this trip I had the following meals

Breakfast (all 3 days b/c I loved it) - fresh cooked eggbeaters omelette with a little ham, lots of mushrooms and spinach. 1 cup of canteloupe.

Lunch 1 - Cup of chicken noodle soup, and salad bar with low fat dressing
Lunch 2 - Chicken Salad from Chipotle with no dressing and extra salsa
Lunch 3 - Grilled chicken and broccoli from TGI Friday's

Dinner 1 - Chicken Salad from Chipotle with no dressing and extra salsa
Dinners 2/3 - Random assortment of grocery store stuff, shrimp, brown rice sushi, sugar snap peas, small healthy choice frozen food, etc.
Dinner 4 - Grilled chicken Salad from McD's with the low cal vinegarette

I not sure of the exact total, but I'm pretty sure we are talking about at least 5,000 calories of difference over 3 days probably even more. Tack on another 1,000 - 1,500 calories in exerise that I used to avoid, and this 3 days was probably 2 net pounds different from my old habits.

And best thing was I was actually pretty full all the time, I did not skimp on volume.

Weekly Update - Week 10

Starting Weight - 260 lbs
Current Weight - 217 lbs
Loss This Week -3 lbs
Total Loss - 43 lbs

Great to have a solid week. I was pretty sure last week's 1 was a bit artificially low (like the 5 the week before was a bit artificially high), but there was still the nagging concern that maybe I was at a plateau. But feeling good about posting a 3 this week. I'm chasing towards the 50lbs lost mark now, WOW!

Also aso I look at my last 6 or so weeks (after the "low hanging fruit" numbers of the first couple of weeks).

3, 4, 4, 3, 5, 1, 3....

That is a really nice consistency and I think healthy amount for me to lose at this point. I'm really loading up on the protein and doing a lot of weights so hopefully I'm at least maintaining muscle mass.

This week is also very significant for me, it puts me past the 40lb mark which is the amount I lost the last time I worked on this process (mostly through excessive exercise). So as of this week I have lost more weight than I ever have before!

On the downside, 10 weeks in, I find it easierto become apathetic about key behaviors. This is dangerous, as I think one of the biggest things I've done well is to be intentional about my behaviors. I need to stay focused on that.

Nutrition Observations

Mon - 1330 cals
Tue - 1686 cals
Wed - 1835 cals
Thu - 1270 cals
Fri - 1968 cals (V-Day's dinner out)
Sat - 1800 cals
Sun - 1570 cals

The biggest success by far was keeping my calories well in line while on the road M-Th. This was mostly attributable to doing dinners from the grocery store instead of out, but I also made good restaurant decisions.

Friday was my best and worst meal of the week at the same time. The missus and I did Mexican for dinner. On the bad side I ate too many chips, and too great of a volume overall. On the positive side I only had 1 fajita tortilla, and mostly filled up on fajita chicken, beef, quail, and shrimp. Higher in fat that I normally want to be, but skipped the sour cream, guac, and cheese to help some.

I did have 2 mini-reeses cups on V-Day which was the first candy-bar like item I've had in 10 weeks!

Exercise Observations

Monday - Gym
Tuesday - Gym
Wednesday - Swimming
Thursday - Some airport walking
Friday - Nothing (snowed in)
Saturday - Gym
Sunday - Rest

Couple of notes this week... I forgot how much I love swimming, it's such a full body workout and really tires me out, but I don't feel bad while I'm actually doing it. I'm going to try to do this more on the road, since my local gym does not have a pool.

The only big negative for the week was Friday, we were snowed in so I couldn't hit the gym, but I somehow turned that into not working out at all, when I should have easily done 30 minutes of Wii, or something around the house. I did play and roll in the snow some with my daughter, but should have not taken the whole day off.

2 great fitness things from this week though. On Saturday I ran a mile and a half without stopping at a 6 on the treadmill. This is the furthest I've run consecutively in about 4 years. As I've mentioned in earlier posts, I've struggled with leg pain on the treadmill, so I feel my running is behind my other areas of fitness. My cardio and breathing actually could have gotten me to at least 2 miles, but my calves were done at 1.5 miles.

Also I went up another 15 lbs on the vertical press. Started 10 weeks ago at 95 and now am doing the same reps at 155! I actually did 10 pushups yesterday with my 30 lb toddler on my back;)

Looking forward to next week
I am home this week so hope to have a straightforward good week. I'm gearing up for 3-4 straight weeks on the road, so would be nice to lose another 3 or so this week and stay focused.

I'm starting to think it is at least possible (but still a stretch) to reach 200 by the birth of my 2nd child in about 6 weeks. That would require continuing at the pace of 3lbs lost per week which I think is asking too much, but it's a stretch goal!

Fantastic, hope you made it to work out. Although you're the one that probably has lots of advice and motivation after loosing 100 lbs! Wow!

Great job, you are doing great. I have seemed to hit a wall??? I can't lose weight, I have been working out 4 to 5 days a week, feeling really good about that at the Gym, and I have been eating 1300 - 1600 calories a day, I did cheat a little on V-day and a couple of weekend days with more beer then i should have but it is 55 calories, so I don;t know what is going on!!!!!

Oh well just keep plugging along here

Tucker, first of all awesome job on sticking with it even though the scale results haven't been what you hoped for so far. I bet you have felt better with getting that much gym time.

A couple of comments, but feel free to ignore any of it.

1. I think you might not be consuming enough calories. 1300-1600 is really low for you, you should be able to do 700-800 calories more than I and have the same defecit, I would try getting up more in the 2K range. The problem is making those healthy calories, lots of protein, not just sugars/carbs.

2. I think eating too little combined with cheats causes problems because I think it makes your body hoard those cheats. There's debate on this subject, but if I were you I might think this way and give it a shot.

3. I lose weight slower when I go to the gym often, but then often it whooses off if I have a couple of days away from the gym (but still on eating plan). This is because muscles retain more water when they are being used. So nothing wrong with this. I've gone to the gym 4 days this week, been exactly on plan, had killer workouts, and the scale has read exactly the same each day. This has happened in the past, then I won't go to the gym Sat/Sunday or something, and my weight drops by Monday. That muscle water thing is tricky, I just know working on my muscle is helping my fat loss, it's just lags by a good bit.

4. Considering a number of the posts you've made in this thread mention beer, I think you also know another area to try to tackle. The calories in beer are more "empty" than others and it's probably not helping. I've given it up completely for now.

If I were you I'd try to get through a whole week more in the 2k healthy calorie range with lots of protein, cut out the beer and cheats (even for 1 week) and see if that gets the scale going. At least it will help you narrow down the culprits!

tuckr 02-19-2010 10:15 AM

thanks

You make alot of sense!!! I just can;t make myself eat that much, I have been eating healthy and 2000 calories, I feel like I amk constantly eating!!! Thebeer thin you are riht, I will give it a week and try and get between 1800-2000 calories and workout, and forego the beer, maybe LOL!!!!

Thanks again for the encouragement, and the advice I need all the help I can get, you are doing terrific and are a big reason I have been sticking to the gym, you and my little 3 year old girl who has Spina Bifida, and I see her do things that amaze me and everytime I want to cut it short I think about her never giving up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks again

and keep up the good work.

Friday Feb 20th - Binging ........ on cereal???

Well I share successes and failures on here, so I have to be honest and admit that I totally binged last night. The odd thing was that it was on cereal....

For some reason I was really in the mood for cereal for dinner last night, not the healthies thing. I guess it was because I've really cut back on carby things and sugary things, and cereal is a combination of both.

By the end of the binge I had 2 really large soup bowls full of Vanilla Almond Special K, something like 5-6 3/4 cup servings. Adding insult to injury it was with 2% milk, the only thing in the house since I never drink milk so it's just for the kiddo.

While it didn't really blow my calories it was definately a binge for 2 reasons. 1st I had a second bowl for absolutely no physical reason, I just wanted it. 2nd I ate till I didn't want any more instead of at the end of a preset amount that was appropriate to eat.

So the lesson for the day is that you can eat healthy small portions of "unhealthy" foods like desserts, but you can also binge on "healthy" foods like Special K.o

JayEll 02-20-2010 01:16 PM

Yep! Been there, done that!

It's like... you eat the first bowl, then the first bowl eats the second bowl... if you see what I mean. That's why cereal can be a "trigger" food...

Look back over the day, or the last few days. Were you low on protein? Were you under on your calories up to that point? Sometimes that gives a push...

Always count portions, even if you've decided to eat more than a serving. So, suppose a serving of that cereal is a cup (I don't know exactly, for the cereal you ate)--measure out how many cups you put into the bowl. Measure the 2% milk you pour over it. Sometimes just the act of seeing that you're eating 3 servings of cereal and 2 servings of milk can help slow you down...

Weekly Update - Week 12

Starting Weight - 260 lbs
Current Weight - 212 lbs
Loss This Week -5 lbs (over 2 weeks)
Total Loss - 48 lbs

Well, I've been a bit absent from this site which isn't good. I had a rough weekend last weekend, and have done just so-so on plan over the last 10 days. So a lot of pros/cons in this post. The main reason I've been absent is that I'm in the middle of 4 straight weeks of 60+ hour weeks on the road. It's been brutal and is going to continue for the next several weeks. This has been and will be my biggest challenge on plan.

So I've lost 5 more pounds in the past 2 weeks since my last official weigh-in, today was my first day to weigh on that same scale. So obviously happy with losing that much given a number of slip-ups.

The positive to take away is that even though I've had an unacceptable number of slip-ups, I have never just given up on a day, or forgotten about everything. Bad behavior has conquered willpower a few times, but I've thought about it each time. And I really picked myself up and have had several great days in a row which is a nice bounce back.

So for this update post since I've had more slips-ups I thought it useful to look back over the last week and post both good things and bad things that have happened each day.

Sunday
Sunday started off bad when I succumbed and had 2 of one of my favorite breakfast items at church...somebody had baked biscuit rolls with a sausage cream-cheese filling. The day went from bad to worse when I had a huge cold come on very quickly in the early afternoon, just in time for a 3+ hour drive to my work location for the week. On the drive I had a Dairy Queen blizzard. I had a miserable cold, was exhausted, had a terrible plan day, and to top it off it was my first day not calorie counting in almost 3 months on plan:(.

Monday
Monday my cold was full force, but I rebounded a bit with a good breakfast (egg white omelette with fruit) and lunch (turkey salad). It was downhill after that, for dinner I ended up having crawfish etouffe from one of my fav restaurants next to my hotel. Definately a lot of better choices on the menu. Slight redemption when they put an entire loaf of bread in my to-go box that I ignored during my whole meal. No workout on Monday, which stinks but I think was the right call, I was really sick. I also didn't calorie count this day which sucks, although I went back on Tuesday and got caught up for Monday.

Oh and also I get there and my hotel didn't have an in-room refridgerator, so I'm eating out 3 meals a day all week :(

Tuesday
Tuesday started off well again with a good breakfast and lunch. Then I got great personal and bad plan news. My wife decided to surprise me by driving down with my kiddo to spend the night with me. Great of her to drive 6 hours round trip for basically one evening and a night with me. For dinner we went to a famous restaurant known for Chicken Fried Steak and I had.....Chicken Fried Steak with scalloped potatoes and spinach. Definately off plan. I did not work out, we only had about 4 waking hours together so I passed, I think this was the right family decision, but bad for the plan. I did get caught up on calorie counting though.

Wednesday
I was a little bummed about having 4 straight days with pretty major slip-ups, but this day would be no different. Breakfast was great, but went to Mexican food for lunch with co-workers and that was a failure. Got back on track very strongly after work though, hit the gym really strong and hard for the first time all week, and had a great dinner of Ahi Tuna and a portebella mushroom wrap.

Thursday
Feeling strong from my successes of Wednesday, Thursday went really well, had 3 really really healthy meals, so had my first solid eating day from start to finish all week. Only downside was not working out, thanks to the class I was in going 12 hours (yes 12 hours). Unbelievable:(

Friday
Friday was pretty great also eating-wise, did not work out again due to class all day then a long drive home.

Summary
Lots of ups and downs. While I clearly had my worst multi-day stretch since starting up on plan, I am encouraged by keeping my failures mostly limited to single occurances (although too many), and doing other behaviors well and not just giving up.

This week reminded me how hard this process is when I'm at the peak of my stress, workload, etc. This week was HARD HARD HARD. But I'm really glad I picked it up at the end of the week and am doing well this weekend thus-far.

Looking forward to next week
Next week is crushing as well. On the road all week (6 am monday flight) and looking at 60+ hours again. On the plus side my hotel next week has a refridgerator so that should help with eating. This is going to be a tough stretch, I'm a little bummed out thinking ahead about it...

JayEll 02-27-2010 07:39 PM

Hey! You did really well considering! So I'm glad you're giving yourself credit.

That said, you're walking a tightrope, my friend. Your good choices really need to "outweigh" your bad ones, ha ha.

I'm a recovering alcoholic as well as someone who got fat from overeating--and I'm just telling you that to set the scene for this comparison: To go into a place known for its chicken-friend steak and ORDER and EAT chicken-friend steak, would be like me ordering and drinking a double whiskey up, soda back, just because I'm in a famous Irish bar... :fr:

As I learned in a certain program, "If you don't want to slip, stay out of slippery places." The next best thing to remember is that even in the famous Irish bar (or place with great chicken-friend steak) there are other choices, and you CAN make them.

Hang in there! You've been doing so well--keep going!

Jay

get back on it

You are doing great, 5 pounds in 2 weeks with those slip ups, great job, I mean that. Good choice on the family time, much more important in those circumstances then the gym!!! Also it is march first and i amk rededicating my self and acting like March First is Jan 1st so my New Years Resolutions begin again today, that is how I am thinking about it, i slip this weekend as well, McD's Grilled Chik Sand, forgot to hold the mayo and an Egg mcmuffin, feel bad, but the Old days it would have been a number 10 with a couple mcckikens, so guess it could be worse. So I am back on track today and good luck with your work load, and keep it up!!!!!

Tuesday Mar 2 - Refridgerator makes all the difference

2 Days into another week on the road. This hotel has a fridge and that makes tons and tons of difference. By shopping for healthy things and not going to dinner I....

Eat better
Have more time to workout
Have more time to finish work and still get to sleep

Not as much fun as going out to big dinners, but a lot of pros to it which compensate. Several really good days on plan now going back at least to Fri/Sat of last week.

Getting very close to the 50lb lost mark, really hoping I can hit that this week.

It's very interesting for me to be able to follow it... You have a lot to be proud of. In the long run, a tough few days won't derail you if you get right back on plan - which you have.
Just want to say keep up the good work... I'm rooting for you!

Wednesday March 3rd - So much for the gym today

Well did great making it to the gym on the first two days of this trip.

However today my workday started at 6:30 AM and I just finished at 12:15am with only 30 minutes for lunch and 60 for dinner. Brutal brutal.

My brain is completely worn out, but I'm afraid that work involving the brain doesn't burn many calories.

Days like this are a big trigger for overeating, but I actually ate really good today so proud of that.

Weekly Update - Week 13
90 Day Progress Pics - Major Goal!!!

Starting Weight - 260 lbs
Current Weight - 210 lbs
Loss This Week -2lbs
Total Loss - 50 lbs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

OMG!!!! I made it. My own version of P90X lol.

I was hoping to reach 50 lbs lost by the 90 day mark and I hit it exactly!!! Can't quite say how excited I was.

I'll skip over the week 13 stuff, cliff notes--- I was on the road and ate good all week, and did good with exercise. Not a perfect week but an A-

Measurables

90 Days since I started this process. 90 Days ago I weighed 50 more lbs than I do today. So here's a couple of measurables....

Waist: Started 42/44, now comfortably in 36's

Pushups: Started < 10, now can do 3-4 sets of 30 good pushups

Weight Machines: Started at 90lbs on most, now at 155-170 on most with same reps

Cardio Couldn't run at all; now can do 1.5 miles consecutive at 7mph. Can do 60 consecutive minutes of other forms of cardio

The biggest benefit by far has been the increased energy to keep up with my daughter, we have so much more quality time now. I am never to tired to wrestle, run around, do piggy back, etc...

Progress Pics

Not the best pictures, but all I've got handy. Painful to show the befores...

Before (at 260lbs)

Current (at 210lbs)

http://i516.photobucket.com/albums/u...oss/50lbs2.jpg

Looking to the future
I still have plenty of work to do to get down to my current goal of 190, the next 20 lbs could well take another 90 days. But I also think I'll see some huge body transformation in the next 20 lbs.

Also BMI calcs are dumb, the middle of normal for me is 145 lbs at least according to my WiiFit. LOL to lose another 65 lbs I would have to lose a ton of muscle I think. I'll reevalute when I get to 190, but don't think I'll go too far past there.

Wow! The difference in your pictures are amazing. Even thought you're not at goal, I say congrats!!!! :)

I also did not very good this week with working out, and I ate out once or twice (tho I picked lower calorie meals). I ended up skipping the gym Sunday, only went on Wednesday and then did some shoveling earlier in the week -I feel sreally guilty! But yes, I am back to the crunch tomorrow and on schedule.

It's funny how when we have no choice but to take a day off from exercise we now feel terrible, when before we probably didn't care (at least I didn't).

Thanks for the kind words.

I hear your comment above! I have to be really careful because I retain more water when I lift a lot at the gym, so if I skip the gym for 2 days my weight appears to go down faster than when I go to the gym every day, even though I know this is artificial.

Weekend of March 13-14: Dodging Bullets

Well I've been reading the site a fair bit, but not posting a ton. But fortunately it's for a good reason. Since this process has started to settle more into a habit for me, I'm having to think about everything less and am just executing. So that's good.

Anyway I just feel like I escaped this past weekend barely, it was one of those real life weekends that you just have to realize will happen and you have to deal with it. Here's the rundown

1. My brother and his g/f came down to visit for the weekend, so when I returned home from my trip Friday night there was half a leftover pizza in the fridge...AVOIDED

2. Due to houseguests my wife cooked a big country breakfast....AVOIDED only had some eggs and fruit

3. It was my daughters 2nd B-Day party - this involved a cookout of hotdogs, mini-burgers, chips, fruit and of course cake. PARTIALLY AVOIDED, only had 2 mini burgers and a bit of fruit.

4. Then all those leftovers were in my house all afternoon. I really really really really have a hard time with chips being in the house. AVOIDED

5. Then it was my niece's 18th b-day party...at an Italian Restaurant...with at fixed party menu...SORTA AVOIDED I had lasagna which wasn't the best, but skipped having a bunch of pizza for appetizers and cheesecake for dessert.

6. Then our sunday school class had it's monthly potluck lunch on Sunday afternoon. AVOIDED by making pretty healthy choices, limited portion, fruit, avoided the bad stuff and dessert

7. Then those stupid chips and other leftovers were still in my house all day Sunday...AVOIDED... I'm actually considering throwing 2 full bags of chips, I don't want to eat them and can't really have them around.

So I feel like I scraped by this weekend, certainely wasn't "on-plan" but I could have done vastly worse so pretty happy. And didn't use any of the excuses I could have to go overboard.

Now on to a week at home finally after 4 straight weeks on the road!!!

Weekly Update - Week 14

Starting Weight - 260 lbs
Current Weight - 208 lbs
Loss This Week -2lbs
Total Loss - 52 lbs

Well I was pretty excited to lose another 2 after hitting such a major goal last week. With the amount I have lost I thin a 2 each week is about perfect when I am reasonably on plan.

Overall it was a decent week, good nutrition and weak on exercise. Really really worn out from 4 straight weeks on the road. It is super draining. I let that get the best of me a couple of times in regards to the gym, but didn't let it transition over to poor eating.

I've finally learned to accept compliments which have been coming in fast and furious from all quarters. It's starting to make me feel good instead of uncomfortable. There has also been a marked shift from "You look good are you losing weight" to "Wow you've really lost a LOT of weight, you look great".

While this is a pessimistic outlook, the fact that so many people have noticed makes me realize that a lot of people probably noticed the weight gain, but obviously wouldn't say anything.:p:p

Diet
Another M-F on the road, did a great job of shopping for groceries and eating pretty good all week. Also had a few fantastic pretty healthy different lunches. A grilled trout with an asian slaw and cilantro rice one lunch. A take out dinner of seared tuna with edamame. Some nice variation from salads for lunches out.

Hmm there was the night where I had bought a 6 pack of those new 60 cal Chocolate Mousse jello things....and proceeded to eat 4 one night. Oops. I guess it was better than other binges but still out of line.

Only other slight negative is dealing with the size of salads at restaurants. I've found a couple of unbelievable chopped salads close to where I have been working, but they are HUGE. Which is great as they are super good, but more calories than I need for a single meal. But I can't really picture the day where I as a 210 lb guy leaves a portion of a freaking salad on his plate, that'll be the day haha.

Huge success to survive this weekend (see previous post) which was soo full of temptations. Currently I am resisting a half gallon of leftover ice cream from my kiddo's birthday party and a whole bag of sour cream and onion chips less than 10 feet from where I type:( Grrrrr

Exercise
Huge fail here. Really only got in 2 good gym workouts this week. Crushed with work and travel is my excuse, but should have reasonably gotten in at least 2 more. Gotta watch that, fortunately I'm at home now and it's easier when I am home.

I've been trying to run more on the treadmill, and often start my workouts after warmup with a "warmup" mile. I've been trying to run at 7mph, is that too fast? Seems like most people are going slower than that but I like pushing it. But I can really only do a 1 to 1.5 miles at that pace, and am not sure what I could do at a slower pace.

I've been keeping up off and on with my soccer ball juggling trying to get back to >100 from back in high school. Made it to 65 juggles this week!

Looking to the future
Well I am home now for probably 4-5ish straight weeks. Should be able to get more consistent gym time. BUT I'm about to be faced with an even greater challenge. My 2nd child wil be born in the next couple of weeks. This means less sleep, lots of food cooked by others, less time to exercise, etc. etc.

To be honest I have no idea how to handle the first 4-6 weeks with kiddo #2. I clearly don't want to abandon the plan, but the plan just frankly isn't going to be in the cards for a little while. Need to figure out some hybrid solution.

I'm open to sugestions if anyone has any.

 I found myself at the railway station this morning with 20 minutes to wait for the London train. Suddenly, a picture of you doing laps of the airport popped into my mind. I had on my hat, gloves & scarf & the sun was shining. I cranked out three laps!

Now I'm on the train for 3.5 hours but I've got 20 minutes in the exercise account already! (More walking to come - say an hour - before the day is out.)

Thanks, RC!

Haha, that's amazing. I was surprised when I tried how far I could actually walk in 20 or 30 minutes. Plus feels good to get the blood flowing if you're going to be sitting for the next several hours.

Thanks for sharing!

Thursday 3-18 - Random Stuff

Couple of random things...

1. Been having a great workout week this week after epic fail in this area last week. 4 straight days of gym workouts. Even managed to run 2 miles today, one of which was going 7mpg on the treadmill. I think it's weird how I don't lose weight when I work out a lot after several days. I know it's from water, but's it's odd to go for 4 straight days and see the scale exactly the same. Then I'll take sat and sunday off and the scale will drop several lbs by
Monday, or at least that's been the previous pattern. I know it's all that hard work in the week that earns it, but doesn't feel like that sometimes;)

2. Had friends over last night and the 2 nine month pregnant ladies insisted on an after dinner walk to a local place to get an ice cream shake. I was proud I abstained, after having a bit bigger than typical dinner I knew I needed to lay off and was able to!

3. I just finished for some random reason watching 4 episodes of Man vs. Food. I'm pretty sure I gained about 5lbs just from watching that epicness.

4. My dad has recently been asking for advice in regards to weight loss. It's really weird for me to give advice to my dad, it doesn't happen really often. I don't really feel like I'm "worthy" of giving advice, especially after reading so much great advice from long time maintainers here, but it is fun to share different tips and techniques that have worked for me.

5. My wife is due at the very beginning of April. I still think I have an outside shot of hitting 200 by the time my 2nd kiddo is born. That would be momentus. While I didn't weight I know I gained at least 15-20 lbs or so during my wife's first pregnancy, losing 60 during the last 4 months of this would be an amazing 360. I'm also growing really nervous about eating the first 4 weeks after the birth, it's going to be TOUGH. I think losing that month might be almost impossible, but I am hoping to at least stay in maintenance mode at whatever weight I end up being by the birth.

Friday 3-19 Funny Comment

Last night I was playing poker with some buddies at a restaurant/club. Some of us were hungry and ordered food while we were there. One of my good buddies who is about the size I was before I started this process ordered a plate of loaded nachos, it looked very close to this...

http://i516.photobucket.com/albums/u...rds/nachos.jpg

I ordered a nice ahi tuna appetizer (which I love), looked very close to this...

http://i516.photobucket.com/albums/u...ds/ahituna.jpg

So as we are eating and playing somebody made a comment about my weight loss. The guy eating the nachos asked, "So how'd you do it"...

Then it's hard to describe (it was funny with guys, might not have been with girls), but before I answered he kind of looked at his plate and looked at mine and said, "Oh nevermind, answered my own question". :D

Weekly Update - Week 15

Starting Weight - 260 lbs
Current Weight - 206 lbs
Loss This Week -2lbs
Total Loss - 54 lbs

Another nice and steady week. Was home all week, which meant I did a much better job of working out, and was glad to lose another 2. I'm starting to smell the 100's!

I'm now racing my wife to see if I can get to 200 before she has our baby (due at very beginning of April). I'm still super nervous about being on plan after the baby comes for a lot of obvious reasons

Diet
Solid week in regards to nutrition. One small victory, I've had this box of Olive Oil and Pepper Triscuits in the cabinet for a while and would have a serving every once in a while when I was really craving. I used to be able to polish off a box in a day or two. Well I went to have a few last night and actually had to throw away the last bit in the box because they were stale! So that's encouraging about my improving ability to resist temptation. I also managed to make it through 2 birthday parties this weekend and ate pretty healthy.

Made a new creation this week, coleslaw package and seasoning with light miracle whip, tuna, corn, lots of pepper and hot sauce...yummy and very filling for the calories.

I'm still having an ongoing debate with myself about cereal. I don't eat it for breakfast, but about once a week I really want to have it for dinner (400-500 cals worth). I'm on the fence about this, it really hits the spot, but doesn't do much for me nutritionally.

Exercise
Well after a really poor week last week, got back on the horse very well this week. Had full good gym workouts 5 days. I've started to run (at a 7pmh) a mile at the beginning of each workout as a warmup. Pretty crazy to think that 15 weeks ago, I couldn't run a tenth of a mile without feeling like I'm going to die.

Huge exercise NSV this week also. I've mentioned soccer juggling before (keeping the ball in the air without hands), and that I've been working on getting back to my high school form of being able to do 100+ consecutive juggles. It's a good combination of endurance, agility, and coordination, and a fun occasional part of my workouts. Anyway today I hit 107! This might seem silly but it really means a lot to me, physically achieving something that I haven't done in 13-14 years.

Looking to the future
The big thing is obviously the birth of child 2. It will be a massive test in several areas.

1. Having to practice better portion control - I'm still not great at this, much better at choosing healthy food. The problem is that a lot of the food we eat for 6-8 weeks will be brought by friends/family and will consist of mostly unhealthy things like lasagnas, etc, and they tend to bring desserts. This will be very tough for me.

2. Getting to the gym despite lack of sleep - for various reasons I will not be taking a lot of official time off of work in the first 8 weeks, so I will be dealing with lack of sleep and an almost full workload. This is going to make the gym very hard. Lack of sleep leads to a lot of other problems with weight loss. Pretty nervous about this also.

Wednesday 3-24 Random Food Notes

1. I seriously live on in-shell sunflower seeds for my afternoon snacks. I get these 160 calorie bags that take 2+ hours of casual munching to eat, are super filling, and keep my mouth occupied. I also have been relying on these when going to parties, I'll munch on them on the way and at the beginning of a party and it makes it a lot easier to avoid all the junk food around.

2. Sugar snap peas are also an incredible snack food. Crunchy and sweet at the same time. I'm not a huge raw veggie fan, but these are fantastic.

3. 98% Fat Free Hot Dogs are my friend --- I like hot dogs...so sue me. While they are processed, high in sodium and probably other things they are very helpful to my diet as someone who doesn't cook much (only 40 calories!). A can of turkey chili with a couple of these and I'm a happy camper.

4. Sam's Club just started carrying these 16 calorie frozen bars that are like strawberry and orange creamsicle. They are fantastic! Now I have another sweet option to add to my repretoire besides the 60 cal puddings and 10 cal jellos.

5. I love salads, but hate all the prep work involved:( I wish they were easier to eat at home, but instead I usually only eat them when I'm out.

6. Those 100 cal sandwich thins are also awesome. Slap on some deli meat (50-60 cals) and a little light mayo (20-40 cals) and you've got a very satisfying sandwich for <200 cals.

7. I miss chips :( moreso than any other food item I significantly restrict.

8. This is going to sound really really dumb, but I've started to use my toddler's silverware whenever I eat something I'm really tempted to pig out on (like a dinner casserole or the like). The smaller bite help me slow down while tricking me into thinking I'm eating more;)

Re: number 5 - have you thought about picking up a mandoline?

http://www.kitchenniche.ca/kitchen-g...l?currency=CDN

You'd still need to do some prep, but it would be faster. Toss some spinach or baby greens in a bowl, chop some veggies or apples with the mandoline, throw on some chickpeas, and you're all set.

And I feel your pain about the chips.

Rottiedog 03-24-2010 01:23 PM

Yeah, 1200 calories is seeming to be kinda hard to do. But, have already done 3 days of it successfully and find that it's becoming scary to eat now because of fear of re-gaining the three pounds I've lost so far. Hey, you got a great idea about using ur toddler's silverware. That's so cool! Also, triathlons are easy if you do the mini ones. A super sprint is like, a 1/2 mile swim, a 12 mile bike and a 3 mile run or something like that. I dog paddle the entire swims, bike slowly (and whistle while doing it!) and walk/jog the runs. I've done about 7 triathlons and have come in last 6 times. And you know, the farther behind you get, the louder the crowd cheers. It's a great motivational sport and social outlet. You are doing great in your journey. In no time you'll be running your two kids ragged!

Great job!!! You hang in there, maybe stock up on things a coupel days before the baby gets tehre, like healthy stuff, and when you are looking at a dessert have an apple or something by it, just a thought. I am working out harder then i have ever, i feel great, notcieable change in endurance, and recovery time, biked 7 miles yesterday and felt great!!!

Thanks for the inspriation, good luck with the child birth and after maintaining!!!!

You got through the holidays I think you can get through this
