Thanks for the input! I love hearing about how others decided what their goals should be!
For me -- I picked losing just 50 lbs when I started and then about 20 lbs into it I decided why stop at 50 let's go for 100. I never set a date deadline at first but I did set that I would like to lose the rest it of by the end of Jan. lol I hope that is obtainable. |
I picked 145 based on my lowest weight back in college. I was proportional, my clothes fit well and I received quite a few compliments! :) Then I looked at the ideal height weight chart and saw for my frame and height, my ideal weight range is 127 - 141. Once I get to 145, I'll decide if it's worth the effort to lose another 5 lbs.
My goals during my weight loss journey are indirectly weight-related. I have a Thanksgiving goal but I'm not mindful of it. Right now, I'm focusing on eating slowly, stopping when I'm full and learning appropriate portion control. These things have worked in helping me lose weight so far so I've almost achieved these goals (off days included :p). |
I changed my goal several times. First I wanted to leave the obese category and then, the overweight category. Then it became just one more pound, just one more pound. I think it takes some tweaking as you journey.

My initial goal was just to get to a healthy BMI, 155 lbs. Then I decided that I wanted to be squarely in the middle of a healthy BMI, 137 lbs. Now, I've come to realize that my home scale, the main one I use, is about 5-7 lbs low. So, I'm adjusting my goal--130-133. I am still losing very slowly, about 4-5 lbs a month, which is fine. And I have no deadline to reach my goal. I should probably just buy a new scale, because I realize that this is confusing to some. But I don't want to convert/adjust my weight to the dr's scale because it messes with my head. Wait--I have it! When I reach my goal of 133, I'm going to buy a new scale!
As far as a goal is concerned, I'm really just letting my body decide where it wants to be. I try to eat mindfully and healthily while avoiding emotional eating if I can--I am certainly not perfect. And I do exercise lots. I guess it's a combination of both the scale and being able to live comfortably in my own skin. I'm not willing to give up having fun just to be skinny! |
