Your Ideal Weight

I found this "myth" while surfing the net. There is an accompanying ideal weight chart (Located here) which states much lower weight ranges for both women and men. I agree that the Government caters towards unhealthy habits concerning both health and nutrition. I suppose I was just curious if these standards have any other doctors or nutritionist backing the claim? I figured I should check it out before I set my sights on weighing 100 lbs! I would appreciate any feedback.

Thanks,
Kimberley

According to that chart I, at 5' should be below 94 pounds ! That is ridiculous ! I would look like a waif and I can't imagine that I would have much energy,

It does seem a tad extreme, right?

Um. It says I should weigh 127. When I was a size 6 I was 150lbs. :( I think these are a little low...

In my opinion this chart is ridiculous. I'm 5'5" and there is no way I should be below 112 (I'm currently around 130). At my lowest and fittest I was around 118, and I couldn't maintain that for very long. I pretty much ate salad all the time and exercised for about 3 hours 6 days a week. And I looked WAY too skinny. I think my healthiest weight is in the 120s. Don't take this chart too seriously. I'd love to be under 112 and be healthy, but I know it's just not possible. There are other sites that provide healthy weight ranges. For my height I've seen on several sites that I should weigh between 115-150. That's a pretty big range, but I'm sure it depends on many different factors. It's different for everyone.

Here's a thread from a while ago that talked about this issue:

You should find it interesting...

Oh my ideal weight is 100 pounds. I guess I should go change my goal ;)

Jokan 09-17-2009 09:16 PM

Um, yeah, Jillian is 5'2" and weighs 112(from the last report in her bio). So, I suppose she needs to work on her self by these insane charts!!!!!!!

Sunnigummi 09-17-2009 09:27 PM

I found another height/weight chart that seems to acknowledge the fact that everyone is different. The ranges are wide and based off of the person's frame. I'm medium-framed (according to their chart) and I should weigh between 127 and 141. My goal is 145, so that's not too far off (I've been at 145 a whiles ago and I looked lean and healthy) from their range. Your link is way too low. Even for a small-framed person, that would be bordering on unhealthy-thin. I can't imagine being 112 lbs. I don't think I weighed that much since I was maybe 8 or 9? Holy moly. Talk about unattainable!

Sunnigummi -

The link you provided shows my range as 118-132 so I reckon my goal is pretty spot on for me. Thanks :)

mine is 120 something!

when i weighed 125 i was a size 2/4. thats sickening. articles like this further the stereotype that women need to be stick thin. its not okay to be a size 8, 10, or *heaven forbid* 12. you need to be a 0/2/4.

being that small is fine for some women, dont get me wrong, but frankly if i need to be 125 just to be HEALTHY, then i guess i need to be 110-115 to be thin.

ugh, well im glad i trust my doctor over "green smoothie girl". she also proves her math skills by saying she could gain 35 lbs and still have a healthy BMI when the BMI chart puts the top healthy weight for girls who are 5'8 at 155. unless im forgetting my addition and subtraction... she screwed up.

SunnyP 09-17-2009 09:41 PM

Yeah that's totally off. It says at 5'7" I should be 122. My LBM is 116 sooooo unless I'm supposed to be at 5% body fat then no way LOL

Thighs Be Gone 09-17-2009 10:09 PM

I am pretty sure I would look too thin at 122. If I could snap my fingers and be that weight though---well, I would be willing to try it on for size. LOL!

That does seem awfully low. Mine says at 5'8" I should be 140#, and my goal weight is 150#.

These charts may be “politically incorrect” but more accurately reflect the weights of indigenous people all over the planet who eat whole-foods diets closer to the earth and suffer from little degenerative disease
LOL, the only reason the people who "live closer to the earth" reflect these sort of weights is because they're MALNOURISHED. I'm totally comfortable with being 5'2" and between 130-135lb, seriously. This chick is crazy.

Also, wtf, "upward-trending" BMI? BMI is BMI, there's not really a way around that.
