How's your BMI doing?

I started out at 170lbs and am now 161 lbs. My goal as you can see from ticker is 140. I have just checked my BMI and am still in "overweight" category, albeit a little closer to "normal range" .

Does anyone else check out their BMI?:dizzy:

MrsWolf 06-17-2009 06:18 PM

Well, I don't want to brag... but my starting BMI was 39.1 :sp: and my current BMI is 25.2. :D

I started out in the morbidly obese category, and I am now 1.2 lbs away from being "in the normal range"

Okay, I guess I do want to brag.

Jacqui_D 06-17-2009 06:20 PM

I started out at 32.8 "obese" and now I'm 28.0 "overweight." I'm shooting for 22.0 "normal weight."

MrsWolf, congrats on that!!! Great job!!

LandonsBaby 06-17-2009 06:21 PM

No, I don't check. BMI was telling me I was obese. However, my bf% told me I wasn't obese. So...I don't check it anymore.

mandalinn82 06-17-2009 06:23 PM

Me too - BF% says I'm normal, but my BMI will ALWAYS be overweight. I nudged into the normal range right when I hit goal, and I looked positively gaunt, and was able to maintain it for all of a week before it went back up 5 lbs to a more sustainable weight for me.

iaradajnos 06-17-2009 06:34 PM

Hi,
I recently started looking at my BMI. At my Jan 09 weigh in, I was 177 (that's probably a 15 pound loss over last few years from a more usual weight with 200 or so as my max).

My goal this year was to get to the max of my BMI which was 145 pounds (or BMI_24.9). When I started to be very successful this year (shockingly) with weight loss, I redetermined my final goal. I now am at about 145 (need to weigh in on Monday) and plan to have the goal of 127 (BMI_21.7). That BMI number is actually an exact middle of the healthy range. Now that I'm actually at 145 pounds I see that I'm really peaking at healthy because I still have some pudge. I was shocked to see that I'd made it to this weight as I still saw pudge and such. I'm in awesome shape with great muscle tone so I know that it's just maxing out on the healthy range of my weight.

So, the goal of losing another 18 or so pounds seems to be a reasonable goal for health. Of course, I'm watching out and seeing that I place a hold at a healthy weight that makes sense to me and I totally will be done with loss at about 127 or 130.

My next phase is maintenance for the next year with occassional plans to go back to a weight loss calorie/exercise plan to adjust so I stay at that spot. I'm quite nervous to think I'm actually almost there. Just 9 weeks to my vacation which will begin the slow phasing in of maintenance eating.

I have an appointment with a nutritionist just before vacation. I should be five to eight pounds away from final goal weight then.

Started at 36.9, was at 20.14 this afternoon (so says my Wii Fit).

I'm a petite person, so BMI is a good indicator for me. DH is muscular and it isn't so hot for him. He is thin, and still "overweight".

TMG2008 06-17-2009 07:05 PM

I think the BMI is a good tool to use to find your goal weight. That is how I determined my goal of around 148-150 lbs. That puts me at the top end of a healthy weight and BMI.

amynbebes 06-17-2009 07:07 PM

According to a calculator mine is 25.8 right now so I guess I'm close to "normal" by bmi standards.

forestroad 06-17-2009 09:10 PM

Anyone know what "normal" bf% range is?

Sheena41 06-17-2009 09:12 PM

I just crossed over from obese to overweight. I am really glad to be out of the obese category. Now, on to the normal category.

It depends on the source--but for a lean woman, 21-25%, and for a moderate woman, 26% to 29%. Over 30% is considered "overfat." This is according to freedieting.com.

Getting skinnier! I was in the obese category when I started, and am now in the overweight category!

sws19 06-17-2009 10:30 PM

i started out just right at the bottom end of obese. that's actually part of what freaked me out so badly and got me on this weight loss journey. i've always considered myself at least a little bit overweight to solidly overweight, but never "obese." i'm not just at the top end of the normal range, unless i have a particularly bad weekend.

Water25 06-18-2009 10:13 AM

Mine is 24.3, so basically at the top of "healthy".
For the most part BMI doesn't work well for me. I have a broad frame and am really muscular. Anytime my BMI goes below 24, I don't have enough fat and stop getting my period altogether.

Lori Bell 06-18-2009 11:10 AM

Mine is doing very well. Thank you for asking. :)

I started out at 52.1 (Super morbidly obese)
As of my last two weigh ins I'm at 25.4 (overweight)
I hope by tomorrow (weigh day) I'll be 24.9 (NORMAL!) If it doesn't happen tomorrow, I know it will be soon. I haven't had a loss for a few weeks, (despite staying on plan 99% of the time) and I'm due for a good one!

cincimom11 06-18-2009 11:30 AM

When I came home from the hospital after having a baby, I still weighed 285. I did lose the baby and some fluids, but I was hooked up to the IV for so long that I had no weight loss (not losing weight during the birth process is more common than one would think).

BMI at 285: 43.4 (six months ago)
BMI at 240: 36.5 (today)

WhitePicketFences 06-18-2009 12:57 PM

Yes, actually I just checked my BMI this morning when I updated my weight loss chart on weightchart.com My BMI has gone from 38.47 to 25.85.

My official goal BMI is 21.29 (140 lbs) but a BMI of 19.77 - 20.53 (130-135 lbs) is a consideration, too. We'll see when I get down there. I'm hoping to get into the 160s at next monday's weigh-in.

ICUwishing 06-18-2009 01:33 PM

Only thing I used the BMI for was figuring out what I had to do to get under 25.0, because that is where I get cheaper health insurance with my employer.

StringBean 06-18-2009 01:57 PM

I was a hair under 'obese' when I started, and now I am only JUST in the 'normal' range. When I (hopefully) hit goal, I'll be right in the middle of 'normal'.

munchievictim 06-18-2009 01:59 PM

yikes, the bmi. I have hovered right on the borderline between overweight and obese since high school. The first time my bmi said obese, I thought I was going to throw up. I had NEVER considered myself obese. For this reason I have little faith in the bmi, but realized as i was reading this post that I am again back down into the overweight category. I feel much more comfortable here. :)
my ticker tracks my bmi.
(**Edit--apparently bmi is still over 30 according to ticker? this confuses me, as the last time i checked, the chart said I would be 'overweight' once my weight was below 190, which it is now, if only barely. I don't know, perhaps it's just an imperfect system?)

forestroad 06-18-2009 02:15 PM

When I hit my highest weight, I was at bmi=30, obese. I had never thought of myself as obese either. I didn't realize how bad I had gotten. Today my bmi is 25.6. I am sooooo close to normal. I tested my bf% yesterday and was at 29.3%...just under the "overfat" percentage. My goal bmi at the moment is 23.3, but I'm losing muscle and fat :( so I might readjust it lower depending on what my bf% is when I reach "goal"

Krista 06-18-2009 02:28 PM

I check my BMI also ,tried to find a BMI tracker and I couldn't so I made my own up. I works for me but I wish it wasn't telling me I'm obese:o Don't like that word...well another reason to stay OP and get this weight off.

mysticshaz 06-19-2009 08:00 AM

i just got to 29.94 on my wii fit last night woop! i never want to be obese again!
1 stone gone 2.5 to go, keep going!

love mystic

Personally, I consider BMI a useless indicator. Mine is between 24.5 and 25.0, depending on which source I use.

For me, the body fat percentage is far more important and that is what I go by. I have always read that 21-24% (in women) means "fit", and bellow 21 means "athletic". Not all charts are the same. Recently somebody posted a link to a chart that also took age into consideration. According to that chart (and I am sorry that I didn't bookmark it) my BF% is "excellent". My BF% is either 21.3% or 22.4% (again, depending on which test results I use). Not in the spectacular category (I am still working on it!) but I when I started, my BF% was 36%.

Here is a link to one BF% chart, both for women and men (but it doesn't consider age a factor): http://www.healthchecksystems.com/bodyfat.htm

Star2Be 06-19-2009 12:32 PM

Oh yeah, throughout the whole process I was always veeery conscious of the points where I would move into a new BMI "range"... I started out "morbidly obese" (a BMI of exactly 40.0 :(), but I knew that I'd be just "overweight" around Onederland (196 lbs) and "normal" around the 160s (164 lbs)... And now I am proud to say that at least as of today, my BMI is 22.5, almost in the middle of the healthy range! So many numbers, LOL! :dizzy:
