weird 'nutrition' class

at the military base, the have free bod pod body fat assessments, basic nutrition, and then an actual nutritionist you can meet with. I went to the class with a friend yesterday and the guy gave the the basics, like how many calories equals fat ect, But then he went over the 'dangers' of a low carb diet, it was ALL wrong, I realize there are lots of people that do it wrong and it can be and it wasn't something I could stick with but the info he gave was just not correct. Then the guy said, There is NO nutritional value in Alcohol, um thats wrong. What about the antioxidants in red wine, ect? I realize it means 1 glass of course and that you can get those other ways but he didn't say that, he said NONE. It was very irritating to listen to.

Hi!
I can imagine how hard it can be to hear info like this. I imagine you are a low-carb dieter? If so, you'll get lots of info from well-meaning people about nutrition, primarily based on the science that is out there. Now, I'm not about to discuss the merits/demerits of any diet system, but just keep in mind that low-carb diets are, well, controversial in the nutritional world.
And as for wine -- there are benefits to wine, but not a whole lot of nutritional value to it. You can't nourish your body on alcohol. There are anti-oxidants that are beneficial, but not nourishing. Wine has lots of calories, but not much else--

Compare this to, say, lentils:

But that doesn't mean you can't have wine and enjoy it!

I dont drink wine not am I a low carber, I have been on low carb in the past, just not something I myself could do long term. I am just saying that he gave info that some was completely wrong, and some just wasn't the whole truth. Like this:
Moderate alcohol consumption may provide some health benefits. It may:

* Reduce your risk of developing heart disease, peripheral vascular disease and intermittent claudication
* Reduce your risk of dying of a heart attack
* Possibly reduce your risk of strokes, particularly ischemic strokes
* Lower your risk of gallstones
* Possibly reduce your risk of diabetes
but the guy said NONE, which isn't the whole truth. That's my only point.

You are absolutely right about the benefits of wine! Absolutely! But in your post he said that there was no nutritional value in wine, and in that, IMHO, he is right. Based on the nutritional labelling.
But like I said in my post above, there ARE benefits with wine! But there is no nutritional value to it. Unfortunately.

There's a lot of 'mays' and 'possiblies' in those statements about alcohol and alcohol has no nutitional benefit. If you want anti-oxidants drink tea. This also has little nutritional benefit but at least its not 100 calories a cup!
