How can eating out be so catastrophic?

  • I don't know if this ever happened to you but I am in a weird sort of dillema.

Ok I started dieting and it does go really good. Anyways on Saturday my parents and I decided to go to a restaurant. I ate the healthiest choice, chicken souvlaki (it is chicken kebab but not marinated), with some salad, two spoonfulls of yogurt and a piece of bread. The exact amount of food my clinical dietician told me to eat. I resisted the fries and eating more bread (a very difficult decision because warm bread is my favourite food).

    Sounds good huh? WRONG!

I went home, weighed myself next morning and I was 1kg heavier. I mean WTF! I have noticed that every time I go out I gain a kg and it does not go away easily. Why is that?

Please don't tell me not to eat out because in Cyprus this is my only way of social gathering. I don't drink coffee because I can't tolerate caffeine so I can't just go for a coffee. And I also don't drink alchohol at all because I take Glucophage and mixed with alchohol has horrible side-effects.

I don't know I just feel a bit frustrated because I also work six days a week so I would really like to meet up with friends on Sundays, but they all want to go out for food, and I feel I am sabotaging a week's worth of diet, even though I am eating the healthiest option.
  • Well ... you can't really gain a kilo of fat overnight so something else is going on here.

    Was the food really salty?
    Were you up until late?
Did you notice that your hands, feet and/or face seemed puffy?
  • Sudden changes like that are due to water retention. You can't sabotage a week's worth of FAT loss by retaining water after a meal out. Don't worry about it--just keep on drinking an adequate amount of water to keep things flowing, and it will be gone again soon. And stay on plan the rest of the time. As long as you are not overeating at the restaurant, you should be fine.

  • I agree with what SusanB and JayEll said-it's probably just water retention, so up your water intake for a couple days. One trick I've learned over the past couple months is to eat a healthy snack before I go out (something like a granola bar), so I'm not as hungry and won't eat as much at the restaurant. Even if the weight gain is water from too much sodium, this helps limit how much sodium you take in. Leftovers from the restaurants can come home for someone else to eat later-helps stretch the budget, too
  • All the gals above me said what I was gonna say...and I definitely emphasize the water!!
  • I agree with all of the above, restaurants as a rule use a lot of salt which will cause water retention.
  • I think the scale is a tool that can be very misleading. People assume that if the scale says you weight 1 or more pounds more than you did the day before that might mean a weight gain, which in my opinion is not the usual case.

So many factors can cause the scale to increase from hormones to not getting enough sleep. Salt and other things as well, as another poster already mentioned. Right now my scale says I weight 284 pounds, which I know is false because I'm hormonal at the moment. I know I'm retaining water and this is common for me. I mean I'll weigh myself one day and the next i might show a 3 pound increase lol. Doesn't mean I gained actual weight though. I won't know until my body settles a bit.

You made good choices while eating out and you hopefully had a wonderful time!
  • If you aren't drinking enough water, your body will hold onto whatever water you give it, that's sometimes why you retain water, so I agree do make sure you are getting enough.

Just limit your eating out to Sundays if you can, make good choices, and maybe up your exercise after or just make sure that both Saturday and Sunday are really clean, on plan days.

Having a happy social life and being content is important too, and will aid you in your weight loss!
