How often do you weigh?

I know the standard seems to be every week, but I was wondering if some of you had different ways of doing things... As for me I try to weigh everyday because I think it keeps me on track better ;)

srmb60 10-21-2008 08:42 AM

Every day works for me too.

I have a little trick lately to keep myself encouraged. I weigh myself then shuck my jammie drawers and weigh again. I know that if I'm on plan, I will see that slightly lighter weight soon ... even dressed in my pyjamas.

crazy4weightloss 10-21-2008 09:07 AM

Everyday although I need to stop. It's not healthy for me. I need to do it once a week.

Smiling_Sara 10-21-2008 09:10 AM

daily, sometimes twice a day, or even three.

RangerChic 10-21-2008 09:22 AM

Once a week officially. I do sneak a peek sometimes during the week, but I'm trying to get away from that. I don't think more than once a week is healthy. That's my opinion though of course.

FB 10-21-2008 09:30 AM

Each and every day, without fail. NOT weighing myself is what got me into this mess in the first place. Now that I don't skeeve over fluctuations I say knowledge is power, no matter how little use that knowledge (the scale) can be at times.

Botzz 10-21-2008 09:33 AM

I weigh myself every day, but I only count Fridays weigh in number as what I have lost or gained. I find that weighing myself every day lets me know how things are going and helps to keep me focused.

As Ever
Me

jillnicole03 10-21-2008 09:34 AM

I weigh every day before I get in the shower, but if I couldn't weigh everyday I would at least try for once a week, and my weight fluctuates some days so I dont count it as a true weight until I've weighed at that at least 2 days in a row, and if it's TOM that I know its wrong! :)

yoyoma 10-21-2008 09:42 AM

I weigh every day, and I jot it down in my food log. But I only "count" the Sunday weight as official and that is what I use for my ticker.

hereyago 10-21-2008 10:00 AM

I try to weigh only on the weekends, but often sneak in weigh ins during the week which actually discourage me.

I am so obsessive about it I have two scales and compare the two. One is a a Healthometer with the large dial display, and the other is a digital Tanita (used my 20% off Bed, Bath, and Beyond coupon to buy it) which measures more precisely to .1 increments as well as body fat.

They both line up closely, but sometimes the Tanita helps me feel more encouraged because it shows smaller increments and small gains (like a 1/2 pound loss in the middle of the week if I just can't wait until Saturday for the weigh in).

owlmonkey 10-21-2008 10:10 AM

I try to weigh every week, because every day seems to obsessive to me. I would have the tendency to panic if there is any fluctuation in the up direction and try to compensate. I am trying to be more easygoing about the scale because I'm more concerned with getting to a size rather than a weight.

SandiCO 10-21-2008 10:30 AM

Every day, and I count my weight loss from 7 days ago. I find that even when my weight goes up from 1 day to the next, it's still down from 7 days ago. If the rolling 7 day weight is up, then it's time to reassess my weight loss strategy.

PhotoChick 10-21-2008 10:38 AM

I weigh every morning, right after I get out of the shower.

My "official" weight (for ticker, and website and so forth) is the Monday figure.

This works for me for a couple of reasons.

First is that I do better knowing what my daily/weekly/monthly variations are. From weighing every day, I can see the pattern when I stop losing right before my TOM, and where I eat something salty and gain water weight, or when I have a really tough workout and retain water. Knowing that makes it easier when I see on a Monday that the scale is up or that I haven't lost anything ... because I can generally tell *why* instead of just freaking out that my weekly weigh in was high.

Second is that I know myself and I know that weighing is not something that becomes an obsession with me. Nor do I freak out about the scale. So it's not a big deal for me to weigh daily. If it were something that I got depressed over or freaked out over or otherwise emotionally involved, I probably would try to avoid it. But for me the scale is a good motivator and a good indicator for me .. and nothing more.

I weigh everyday and change my ticker accordingly. But if I have been on track with eating and exercising and there is a rise, I do not record it because I know it will go away soon. And so far, it always has.

midwife 10-21-2008 11:06 AM

I weigh everyday. Yes, there are fluctuations and I have discovered a lot about how my body fluctuates.

What is right for an individual is right for that individual. Some people do well not weighing at all.

The National Weight Control Registry indicates that regular evaluation of progress helps people be successful at maintaining. It is helping me.

Lori Bell 10-21-2008 11:11 AM

Once a week on Friday for me. In past failed diets I weighed daily, and fell into some dangerous and unhealthy obsessions when the scale betrayed me. I will not go back to that. Because I am faithful to myself, I actually look forward to my Friday weigh in.

inanesam 10-21-2008 12:27 PM

Hehe, I think I'm the opposite of everyone. I weigh myself when I start out on getting myself together, and then for the first few months, I only weigh once a month. Then when I'm going strong and know that I've been losing, I'll weigh once a week or two weeks. Depends on if I remember.

I don't like I be obsessive about it. I've always been more about how my clothes fit rather than what the scale says. The scale can stay the same, but if my pants are looser, than I am a happy camper. :D

MonteCristo 10-21-2008 02:09 PM

I weigh once a week. For that weigh-in I try to do it at the exact same time, conditions, etc. Sometimes I'll hop on the scale during the week just for some idea of progress, but as I may be in a different state of dress or time of day, I don't give it much "weight". ;)

inspired by you 10-21-2008 02:24 PM

I weigh a few times a day. I'm very obsessed. I just started on my journey and lost a few pounds and i just know i'm going to step on the scale one day and there those 10 pounds will be looking me in the face saying "you really thought you lost me didnt you?" so far so good...i only weigh in and measure once a month at the gym so I guess I need to pick a day every week or every other week to keep track more often and to update my profile and my ticker when i earn it.

shawnee66 10-21-2008 03:17 PM

I weigh everyday but only worry about the number I get on Mondays. I need to weight everyday. I need to when over indulging in my eating so I can change things up.

Thinnerinnerme 10-21-2008 03:59 PM

I weigh myself in the morning to stay on track. However, I only count the number I see on my official weigh in day which is Monday. The other days are just to monitor progress, reduce salt when needed and motivation to drink more water.

biolerchick 10-21-2008 10:00 PM

I weight every day. It definitely works best for me. My weight does fluctuate a lot from day to day, but I understand that, and if I do gain a little from one day to the next it doesn't bother me. I graph my daily weights in excel so I can see the overall trend. I do count my Monday morning weigh-in as more of my official weigh-in, and that's what I put on my blog.

rileyozzy 10-21-2008 11:40 PM

I weigh twice a day; once in the morning and once at night. I am a little obsessive about it, but it helps me stay on focus. I change the ticker when I hit the same number three days in a row. I have a total routine.

jessabee 10-22-2008 12:22 AM

If I'm doing badly, I avoid the scale like the plague; however, if I'm on track, I usually weigh every morning just to start the day with my health in mind. I only really worry about the number on Monday mornings, though.

Bravelilchicken 10-22-2008 01:14 PM

I weigh every time I go to the bathroom, past the bathroom or in the general direction of the bathroom. I know I shouldn't and I have tried not to but I still do. It is kind of sad isn't it.

Ookpik 10-23-2008 11:52 PM

I weigh myself every day, in the morning after using the bathroom. I take normal fluctuations into consideration, such as PMS, etc., but weighing myself everyday helps keep me on track. For one thing, it sure makes me think twice about what I put into my mouth. Also, I know that if I am a pound or so up, and there is no reason for it (such as PMS) other than I just ate too much, I can evaluate my behavior (emotional eating/not challenging my body enough, for example) to change that behavior so that I can continue losing. I look at the scale as a tool to monitor my weight, much as a diabetic uses a glucometer to monitor their sugar levels. The scale doesn't make me have a good/bad day, but that's just me.

rinku 10-24-2008 07:00 AM

I weigh myself daily..never worrying about the small fluctuations which can happen when you weigh yourself daily. If I see the weight in upward trend for 2 -3 days in a row then I change my diet, pattern add more cardio till I get back in the desired range...to me weighing daily means keeping myself on track rather than waiting for 7 days to see if I got off track or was going right.

Pandora123a 10-24-2008 07:37 AM

I weigh every day, sometimes more than once. Only count Mondays for my ticker. I try to very much focus on how satisfying it is to see a lower number on the scale...lower than my starting number that is!

Weekends are my weakness, so the other thing about a Monday weighin is that most of the week I am usually lower. Monday is usually my "highest" morning of the week...and I then get some pretty immediate satisfaction.

The key for me has been not to obsess about daily changes, but to use the current scale weight as a positive. (Hey, the middle number is 1, hallelujah) even when the total number fluctuates a bit. As others have noted, it has also helped to identify some of the fluctuations and what causes them. (For instance Chinese food invariably causes a jump...the msg grabs every water molecule and hangs on tight!)

clewles81 10-24-2008 07:54 AM

I weight myself everyday probably about three times during the day but I only record it once a week. I would like to only weight myself once a week but I don't see that happening anytime soon.

alwaysej 10-24-2008 04:11 PM

Once a week is best for me.

Extasee58865 10-24-2008 04:28 PM

I weight everyday. I find that it helps keep me on track. If I were to only weigh myself once a week, potentially I could gain a lot of weight in that week if I wasn't staying on track. By weighing everyday, I always know what I am, and I know that if I ate too much the past couple days or whatever. It doesn't work everyday for everyone tho

Extasee58865 10-24-2008 04:29 PM

Oh, just a quick PS - I only "officially" count my weigh in on Thursday. That is the day that I actually log the number to keep track of my weight loss on a graph. :-)

Gattona 10-27-2008 04:28 AM

HI, for the first time in my life I've been weighing myself everyday and found its helped me keep focused. I use the charts on physicsdiet.com and can see how even though I go up, I go down again .. previously I've given up at the first couple of gained pounds .. and binge to cheer up.

I'm new here so maybe information about this site has been shared already. If so, sorry.

foxsealady 10-27-2008 03:21 PM

I track it every day, but my official weigh in is Monday. I chose Monday to keep me from slacking on the Weekends. I don't think of daily as obsessive so much as away to hold myself accountable. It's like my daily reminder that I have made a commitment to myself.

downtomygoal 10-27-2008 03:31 PM

I weight in once a week. once I reach my goal itll be everyday

fld20 10-27-2008 08:09 PM

I'm an every day I cant stand not knowing if it's gone up.

evince 10-28-2008 07:13 AM

Technically only once a week, but when I'm at home (parents' house) we've got a scale so... it's hard not to check everyday.
