Question

I've been losing weight for the last month. I lost 5 pounds before starting WW and 3.6 my first week. This week I'm stuck. I lost three lbs since Saturday, but only when I weigh myself in the morning. I can gain up to 7 lbs during the day when I weigh at night, but in the morning I'm back down to my weight the previous day. Have I hit a plateau :?: I use the scale often to monitor my weight changes, normally I don't pay much attention to the number but this is the 4th day that I have weighed the same in the morning. Any help would be great. Thanks!

Congrats on your loss so far!!

Welcome to the wacky world of weight loss! It actually sounds like everything is normal! Weight loss isn't linear -- our bodies have lots and lots of ups and downs (remember the scale isn't just weighing your FAT, it's weighing all of you, including water, which frequently fluctuates). Most people weigh less in the morning than later in the day. The general advice is to weigh at the same time and under the same conditions each time and use that number as your benchmark.

Because of the frequent fluctuations some people don't like seeing all the ups and downs, so they weigh weekly.

We don't generally consider people to be at plateaus until they have been at the same weight for a number of weeks!

For more info, see this great thread on scale fluctuations.

So, my advice -- be patient and if the fluctuations bother you, weigh weekly!!

Leave the scale alone for a week. I would go nuts if I weighed myself daily. Lots of things have impact on your weight (food, exercise, water intake, bowel movement, menstruation, etc.). You are doing great so far.

There are a million things that can cause weight gain (now note that I said weight and not FAT) during the day. There's no way you're gaining 7 lbs of fat over the course of a few hours, especially when you're on a calorie deficit. Just weigh yourself once a day at most, in the morning in the same or no clothes on, before you've eaten breakfast and after bathroom usage, and then after that STAY AWAY FROM THE SCALE. You may even want to, as has been said, avoid the scale for a week or so. You'll drive yourself insane if you take the fluctuations, even the ones that you can experience in the morning with your normal routine, seriously. ^^

Thanks for the advice everyone! I'm going to stay off the scale until Saturday (my official weigh in). I'm overly paranoid about things so it might help just to stay away!
