Well, you can die, anyway. Drowning comes from water in the lungs, and you can't oxygenate your blood. This just causes your blood sodium concentration to be too low, which is verra verra bad for the brain. Daily science done for the day ;) Everyone go out for recess now :carrot:

Mornings I have my home version of an iced mocha (1/4 cup coffee, 3/4 cup skim milk and 1 Tablespoon light chocolate syrup), as well as a cup of water with breakfast. While I'm at work I drink only water. I have a 16-oz travel mug, and I usually drink 4 of those--more if I work late. That's my 64-ounce minimun right there, so I don't usually count beyond that. At home I drink mostly home-brewed ice tea (and lots of it), but try and work in plain water on the weekends. Once in a great while I share a diet Pepsi with my son (usually at a movie), or I treat myself to a nonfat iced mocha/coffee from a coffee shop.

Here's my average daily intake of liquid:

20 oz DD coffee (black) in the mornings.
2.2 liters of water over the course of the day (I have a large container on my desk that I fill up first thing in the morning and use to fill my glass throughout)
12 oz Diet Coke in the mid-afternoon (not every day, but probably 4 out of 5)
20 oz of water (from a bottle) when I'm at the gym (on days I don't go to the gym, I don't drink this extra water)
20 oz of water (refilled the bottle) on my way home
20 oz glass of decaf iced tea in the evening
sometimes 1 glass (6-8oz) of red wine in the evenings

And that's about it.

Okay, I have to ask about the "output color" point - it is supposed to be light or clear to show you are properly hydrated, right? I let myself get a little low on the water intake this weekend so where I was pretty clear last week I'm not at all clear today and yesterday... How long will it take to recover from that? I also weigh a little more today and show a higher percentage of BW even though I consumed a lot less... What's up with that?

I don't believe in the color output theory of evaluating urine. If it's really dark or off in color (reddish, cloudy) then it means something is wrong--otherwise, if I'm drinking my correct amount, I don't worry about it.

I tend to get kidney stones, so I do pay attention--I just don't try to micromanage... :)

For me the color output thing doesn't work because I take a food-based multivitamin that turns my pee bright yellow-orange. So if I judged my water intake by having clear pee, I'd wind up drinking 4 or 5 gallons a day! :D

For me, I keep an eye on how *often* I'm peeing and how much I sweat when I'm working out. And, well, how thirsty I am.

If you drink only one or two glasses of water a day, when you pee it w/be pretty yellow/dark because it is so concentrated. Personally, I believe this means your body is using everything you're giving it and that you are not getting enough liquid. If you drink too little there won't be much output anyway. If the color is a lighter yellow - or nearly clear if you're drinking alot - then I believe your body is adequatly hydrated. If you're taking vitamins or meds that affect the color of your urine, obviously don't go by the color. :)

Another indicator (ok, at least in my book) too see if you're adequately hydrated is the consistancy of your, um other output. Hard and really solid? Again, I think not enough liquid. Aahh, no need for further analysis -- you get the picture. :D

Shannon -- you drank less this wk and the scale bumped up a bit? The less you drink the more your body will hold onto water. The more hydrated you are, the less water your body will hold onto. Also, even though you may have eaten less if those foods where higher in sodium and you drank less, again your body is holding onto the fluid.

The whole 'color' thing -- it's just a guideline; nothing more, nothing less.

Oh the joys of trying to lose weight!

Hat Trick - thanks for the info! I don't think the foods I ate had more sodium than last week (I tend to eat the same food week after week after week - boring!), but I know I had a lot less water than normal... It seems funny to think about retaining more water the less water you drink, but it does make sense. If you have a more hydrated base to start from you don't hold on desperately to what you do drink... :-)

Trying to be healthy makes me crazy sometimes! Now that I'm getting my hydration inline I guess I have to start thinking about eating more fiber to get other things in line... :-( more to keep track of...

Hello...

Drinking more water flushes out salt, so that less water is held in the tissues by the salt. It sounds opposite, but that's how it works. :)
