Hey chicks, what are your triggors?

  • What have you found that leads you to over-eat and sabbotages your efforts the most?

For me, it's a long list, so I have to be super careful, but here goes:

    1. The week before I get my monthly visitor
    2. A bad night of sleep
    3. A headache
    4. Being sick
    5. Going to an amuesment park
    6. Being at my parent's house
    7. Not eating enough protein...especially at breakfast.
    8. Letting myself get too hungry between meals/snacks
    9. Eating at a place that is out of my control: going to a place that has no healthy choices...could be a restaurant or someone's house.

Ok, so that was a very long list, but I'm a food addict, so I gotta be aware of my triggors. I tried to list them in order. What are your triggors? Thans!
  • Alcohol is a trigger for me.

Not in the sense of being an alcoholic, but I like a glass of wine with dinner or a drink after dinner or something. When I have a drink I tend to eat more, or I tend to ignore the calories in what I'm drinking. I've sabotaged myself before by not counting the calories in a glass of wine or a glass of vodka in the evening; and those 160/200 calories add up quickly.

    .
  • Social events, unplanned food (like a work event that has snacks), business trips.
  • Very stressful events tend to lead me straight for chocolate (but I'm working on it!)
When I'm extremely tired, I can't tell if I'm really hungry or when I'm full.
  • Stress from overwork is a big one for me
  • -Having guests over
    -Social functions
-Being away from home (my safe, well stocked environment)
    -Home made baked goods
  • I feel like I am still figuring out what my triggers are, but here's what I've noticed over the past month:

Emotional stress is far and away the WORST trigger for me.
    Boredom.
Socializing - and not being brave enough to veto a restaurant that I KNOW will lead me to make bad choices.
Making any kind of food "off limits."
Being a picky eater - I wish I had a more adventurous palate. It would make eating well so much easier.
  • Work anxiety is a huge trigger for me. Whenever I'm faced with an important talk or big project, I have to fight the urge to snack.
  • 3FC! No, really.

I hardly ever post, but I do lurk quite avidly. The boards are an amazing source of support, but I notice that it's possible to "over-read" -- if I read one too many posts with descriptions of off-plan foods, I start feeling hungry and munchy even though I know I'm not, just from reading other people's posts... that's when it's time to get up and back away, slowly. (and not in the direction of the kitchen! )

I can't be the only crazy one out there, can I?
  • 1. Not getting enough sleep / being out later than I'm used to (like a night out with friends til 1 or 2 AM).
    2. A headache
    3. A cold
    4. Boredom
  • Found Food
    Stress
    Denied foods
Eating ahead if I'm concerned I'll miss a meal
    Habit

I don't think you are. A number of people refer to the various food postings sometimes as "food porn". It can be a dangerous discussion
  • 1. being too tired to cook (which is often with my chronic illness)
    2. letting myself get super hungry
    3. being alone for long periods of time
  • TV commercials for food I like (and on some days, foods I don't necessarily like too!). They make me want to clear out my fridge. I've learned to mute the sound and look away when they come on!

Also, I agree about the posts on off plan foods. The power of suggestion is strong!
  • Movie theaters! I LOVE movie theater popcorn! (I havent been to a movie since I started my program...) 2 weeks with no popcorn! Also, when you smell a neighbor or drive by someone who is Bar-B-Qing! Aw, it drives me nuts!
